Aurifil LOVES Robert Kaufman Kona solids! When asked to take part in sharing the Happy 30th Anniversary news and participate in a blog hop it was very easy to say yes to our friends!
Today’s quilt , North & South, was designed and made by Nichole Ramirez. Nichole works for Robert Kaufman in Marketing. Many of the great people that work for Robert Kaufman are also incredible quilters! This stunning quilt was displayed in the Aurifil booth during International Quilt Market.
“Working in Marketing, we get to brainstorm and bounce ideas off of each other all the time. The great thing about working at a company like Robert Kaufman is that in one meeting I can say “let’s make 30 quilts to celebrate 30 years of Kona!” and before I know it, there’s a list of amazing designers and tons of quilts being sent to our office.
Narrowing it down to just 30 designers was probably the hardest part. We made sure to pick all sorts of designers: Modern, Traditional, Contemporary, Modern Traditionalists… a little bit of everything! It’s a very well-rounded group and does a great job showing off the many different ways to use Kona.
In designing my own quilt, I reached for the 32 new colors that were released in July. I have been obsessed with flying geese lately, and wanted a design that showed the movement of the colors in the new bundle. The layout of the blocks reminds me of migrating birds, so the title was kind of a no-brainer.
The quilt was pieced by the talented Andrea of Knitty Bitties and she did an amazing job bringing my sketches to life. The quilt then got passed off to one of my favorite long-arm quilters and fellow Los Angeles Modern Quilt member, Tanya of Freerange Quilter
The pattern is available as a free download from the Robert Kaufman site in the Free Quilts & Projects section. The bundle used to make this quilt coordinates perfectly with 30 of Aurifil’s lovely colors.”
It’s hard to narrow it down to one favorite quilt, but the one that stands out for me is Anita Grossman Solomon’s Make It Simpler Two Color Pineapple. It’s the perfect example of a Kona quilt managing to be both classic and modern.

I like Wisteria, thanks for the giveaway!
My favorite depends on the day, the project, and my mood!
When you need a white background or border Kona is the very best.
Charcoal has been my most used color this year. Second being Oyster.
Parrot is a great green.
Eek- how can I pick just one! Jamaica , watermelon, niagra just to name a few! Thanks for the opportunity to win!
I find myself moving from Snow to Ash. It’s my new favorite neutral.
Niagara looks great!
My favourite is Kona Snow.
My new go to color is light or dark grey.
cactus is my go to colour at the moment
I keep Kona Snow on hand in jelly rolls, charm packs, and yardage for backgrounds and use it often.
Cyan is my current love right now
I have never used Kona before, so I guess I don’t know which is my go to color. I would guess something creamy for background!
I like the greys – both the dark and the light
I love chartreuse but my go to is snow.
Snow is the solid I always like to have in stock and use time and time again.
Surf is my favorite, but I’m really liking the addition of the grey in this quilt.
Snow is the best! I use it for my sashing. Sure there are lots of wonderful colors, but the quality of Snow for that great background is unbeatable 🙂
I like medium gray
Kona Steel is the one I’ve got on the bolt as my go-to background colour, but I’ve been thinking that next time I would go with Stone.
Kona Snow is my favorite go to color. Whenever I need a light background that’s what I choose. When my daughter got married she didn’t want a traditional guest book so we had everyone sign a 5 inch square (cut from Kona Snow) and I turned them into a quilt!
I’m so fickle, I can’t pick just one. Naturally, I use Kona Snow a lot.
New to Kona solids. Colors depend on the project, etc.
Thank you for the giveaway.
Mary J
I use a lot of Snow but I need to branch out.
I am in love with steel right now!
I love blue and I’m drawn to Peacock
I mostly use white but love the Aqua colors as well!
I have had a precious stash of black for many years, but it is almost gone because I do “go to” it!
I think snow is the one I buy most often. I love all the colors but I use yards of snow.
Snow is the one I use most. Thank you for the giveaway.
I have to admit, I buy more Kona Snow than anything.
Snow!
Hard to pick a color. Snow s great for backgrounds but I love oranges and reds right now too.
Love Anita Grossman Solomon’s pineapple quilt. I’m actually taking her class on Craftsy right now! I love Kona Solids especially Kona’s black!
The Kona solids are rich in colour but my go to colour is Snow!!!
That pineapple quilt is my favorite too. I love all the reds, but I probably use more Kona Snow than any other solid. It’s the perfect not quite white.
Looove “Cabbage”…and “Pond”
Of course too many colors to pick a favorite, but right now I’m leaning towards cobblestone. Thanks for the fun.
Besides my staples of Snow and Black, I love and have on hand the Chinese Red.
I love Kona Storm for a great navy.
Loving Titanium & use Slate quite a lot! Need a list of those 30 Aurifil colors please!
i like all the greens especially Olive
My favorite Kona is their neutrals, which I love Eggshell. But if I had to pick a color it would be Oasis. So cool and refreshing! Thanks!
I’m loving Kinda Silver lately. Somehow I prefer greys to whites as background.
My fav Kona solid is actually the white. I use a ton of it! That’s a great new quilt pattern! Thanks for the giveaway!
Snow goes great with my 1930’s stash of fabrics!
Sprout!
I love your quilt design!
I don’t think I can pick a favorite color – I love the blues!
Well I have to say the ‘color’ I use the most is Snow because it’s the best white for my vintage fabric taste. BUT, I’d like to get my hands on the new Pickle – such a cute name and the color would be fun to combine with a complimentary.
thanks for the giveaway!
I use a lot of the white and the gray. I don’t know if I could pick which one I like best. I did use a charm pack for a table runner last year, and that was really fun. To see so many colors all at once was amazing!
Watermelon I must say!
The one I like the best is Robin Egg, but probably the one I use the most is Ash since it makes a great background to make many colors pop.
My usual go to is white. Thanks so much for the chance to win a great charm pack 🙂

I love all the colors in any Kona Cotton Charm Square pack. It would be hard to choose just one color. I love how all the colors interact with each other.
I like Watermelon and I like Snow. Thanks for the chance to win!
I use Snow a lot and just love Steel. Thanks!
sew hard to pick just one color, but for some reason Azure always ends up in my quilts lol
“Snow” has got to be my go to in Kona. It can be a background color to make the blocks pop in a modern quilt or used in my reproduction quilts to give it an old timey look…love it
my fav is Cerise!
Wow I love your use of all those colors with grey, And I love Anita’s Pineapples! Goto Kona coor for me is Sky!
Glacier is one of my favorites. dawnm1993 at gmail dot com
I’m totally smitten with all the watery, beach glass blues. Yummy!
I was just looking at fabric yesterday at a local fabric store and found myself picking beach/sand and ocean blue/green colors.
I love that there are so many colors. I know that they can’t all be my favorite but it does depend on the day and what project I am working on.
My go to color is Snow, then any of the shades of blue. Thanks!
my fave kona color is lagoon
I’m pretty new to the process of quilting, especially choosing color combinations, after sewing garments for years. So unless someone walks me around the fabric store and picks for me, I’m totally befuddled. I went to the Robert Kaufman site and looked at all 303 Kona colors and they are fabulous – I love the organic names. I could pick the perfect shade of my favorite color, but after reading all the comments so far, I’m beginning to get the message that one needs a good neutral to serve as background. With that in mind, I like the looks of Shadow – at least on the computer screen ;), but I notice not too many commenters choose grays for their neutrals. I’m looking forward to seeing it in person next time I get to a city with a fabric store. Nearest one is 150 miles away.
Pomegranate please!
Kona Cerise!
My fave color is Crocus, but my go to is Kona Snow!!! amycaldwell@swva.net
So many amazing quilts! Kona Snow is a go to background color, love it!
Thank you for a super giveaway and a chance to win.
usairdoll(at)gmail(dot)com
Love the pale greys for backgrounds…. Iron, Silver, mixed up with any and all of the reds/yellows/oranges!
I’m currently using Kona Slate for some sashing and loving it. I want to make more quilts with a non-white sashing.
Kona snow is my go to color, but I have some aqua, waiting in the wings, I am itching to use!
Reds, yellows and oranges are my favorites to use in a project now. It is very cold where
I live now — the bright colors seem to add a bit of warmth to my sewing area.
I like the yellows…. and Sunflower is looking to be my favorite.
I use Kona Snow and aqua in many of my quilts. Another new color I love is the light gray. I don’t know the correct name. 🙁
love how pure their yellows are. canary is my current fav!
Kona Snow is definitely my favorite!
My go to color is Kona Snow – my new favorite is Morning Glory. Thanks for the give away!
If I have to pick just one – it’s Chartreuse
I’ve used Snow and Oyster the most this year for sashing and backing, but there are many other awesome colors! In fact trying to decide on one to finish my daughter’s birthday quilt!
I’m always using Kona Snow for white backgrounds!
I love blues and greens!
I have a tough time choosing just one go to colour among those fabulous 303 options – but I did just finish two quilts featuring Honey Dew and Aqua!
HI, love Kona Snow!
Thanks!
My favorite is Lagoon, but my go-to color is always white!
I seem to use Kona snow more than anything else right now. I use all the colors though, it is great fabric and I love the texture! Thanks for the giveaway!
tdkcarpenoctem@hotmail.com
All of the colours are gorgeous – so much choice! A colour for every project. I’ve just bought white, astral and black to paper piece a Lego Captain Rex!
Love Robert Kaufman fabrics…
Depends – I usually like the blues
What a great quilt! Thanks for sharing!
And my fave is navy 🙂
Love the grays especially silver to go with everything.

I love all your aqua/turquoise shades…and black!
Difficult to pick one…Honey Dew today!
I love Snow but Charcoal is equally great! mumbird3(at)gmail(dot)com
While I use Kona Snow the most, my favorite is Lagoon. It takes me to wonderful places. Sigh.
I use Snow the most but have slowly been collecting blues, greens, aquas.
Depends on what project I’m making. I tend mainly to snow but have been venturing into a few greens and reds.
My favourite for the moment is Heliotrope. I do love working with solids in general. Great giveaway!
Love snow….it’s been my most used one this past year……
Geranium and Grey…. I love them.. Modern and intense combination
I have to say that I love all the colors but use snow the most!
Graphite is my go to grey.
Oh my…. I can’t pick one…. I haven’t seen any in my neck of the woods 🙁 but I have heard a few southern friends talk about the Kona solids 🙂 My colour preferences seem to change about as much as the weather does lately, so I wouldn’t be able to pick just one anyways! LOL
snow, kona snow
Pretty quilt. Heliotrope is my favorite color.
Goldfish is my choice.
My favorite is Grellow Yellow.
Love working with Oyster.
I love Kona Coal.
Today my favorite color is Silver, but it depends on what project I’m working on at the time. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.
I like pickle, thanks for the chance to win!
White is my default neutral (so boring, I know!) but I really love Indigo as well. Thanks!
I love the Kona solids. My favourite colour is Snow. I love Anita Grossman Solomon’s Make It Simpler Two Color Pineapple – gorgeous!
I love “North and South”! The Kona color that I use most often is Snow. However, I love “Jade Green”.
I love cerise!
I love Kona Snow for my 30s repros quilts. It blends so well!
ooh – I love azalea – its my favourite pink !
I like so many Kona Cotton solids that I don’t have a single favorite! Currently, Royal (blue) is at the top of my list. Truthfully though, it is being paired with White in my upcoming houndstooth quilt.
Snow is the one I try an keep on hand at all times but I also keep shadow on hand as a neutral.
I like Kale.
I love Parchment for all the time use, but my favorite color is Spruce.
Red
The Kona color that I’ve bought the most yardage of this year is black. But that’s not a color. So I’ll say goldfish because that’s the next most purchased yardage this year.
Snow would win because of its role in supporting al the other colors.
I like Snow for backgrounds.
Thanks for the chance to win! I love periwinkle.
I like snow and medium grey….and really love rich red! Thank you!
I love Kona’s pinks and purples. Gorgeous quilt!
I love Snow for background, but Geranium is so pretty.
HAVE USED SEVERAL ORANGE SHADES LATELY
Love all the lovely, rich colors of Robert Kaufman’s Kona solids ~ I use Kona Snow most often!
Snow is my go to.
K001-27 CORNFLOWER is my choice! Great blog hop!
The gorgeous colours make it so hard to choose a favourite and the wonderful, fun names of them make it even more difficult.
Kona Snow is my go-to color when I need a neutral. Lagoon is my favorite color overall.
I love Kona snow. (I hope I haven’t already posted here; I don’t think I have 🙂
Is it possible to have a go to color when there are so many to choose from? I’ve been in love with hibiscus for a year, but who knows how long it will be until another color steals my heart.
My go to colours at the moment would have to be charcoal and snow but there are just so many gorgeous colours, it’s hard to choose!
Favorite color is simply too hard to pick. Favorite color name, will that do? School Bus!
My favorite at the moment is titanium. Love the softness of the color and the strength of the name.
I’m currently working on some hawaiian style projects with a modern twist and charcoal is a perfect background!
Thanks for the giveaway but most of all to have opened it to international friends 😉
Snow, Rich red and Charcoal.
I love your quilt design with so many beautiful colors! I am sewing eight different Kona colors right now! I love the way my quilt is coming together…a rainbow of colors making up A Trip Around the World pattern. It’s so hard to pick just one color but I’ve always been fond of blues.
I used to be a Kona Snow person but lately I’ve changed to using their white for my backgrounds.
Mona nautical is a fantastic neutral to set off warm coloured bright prints.
This week is Cactus. Thanks. LOVE your quilt. I am obsesses with flying geese these days too.
gigiv13@gmail.com
Watermelon is my current favorite. I love your quilt!
Just love your quilts. Thank you for the chance to win.
My go to color is Snow. I do a lot of hand embroidery on my quilts.
Turquoise is the color I use most
I’m afraid I’m just too boring. My favorite is Kona Black!
Currently – dark gray! Thanks for the giveaway!
Steel is a great color for my background. But my favorite is Cyan. Thanks for the giveaway!
Right now my favorite is Robin’s Egg Blue! Thanks for the chance to win!
While I’m in love with all solid colors, I tend to use grays more than anything else for contrast. I recently used two Kona grays with black in a batik quilt and as a neutral in a T-shirt quilt. I can always depend on Kona solids for their consistency of color and broad range of colors, so I tend to use them when designing my own quilts.
I really love the tone of Prussian (blue). Gorgeous!
I love them all! Especially the saturated colours.
I love the Cabbage! Such a beautiful color!
Changes day to day-steel today!
I love Oyster!! thank you!
Coal and Steel are my go to background colors in most my quilts! I love all the colors!
My favorite go to color is whute!
White would be favorite.
My favorite is Silver.
I love Stone.
This week, anyway!
Shades of pink and white.
joycecym@gmail.com
I’ve never used kona before so I don’t have a favourite. Would love to try some though.
Kona Snow.
I haven’t had a chance to try Kona yet.
Thanks for sharing “North & South,” and for the giveaway!
My favorite is Ivory!
The best thing about a huge variety of colors is it eliminates the necessity to choose just one. Fourteen shades of green are better than one; 37 blues beat one, and so on. Nature doesn’t stick with one, and I don’t either.
I just love Kona Snow because of the quality, you can’t go wrong, but I am liking more of the grey as well like Titanium, thanks for the giveaway!
Kona Snow is the color that I use most. I love all the different colors that Kona cotton solids are available in
Depends on what I’m working on but I tend to use a lot of cream. I think I need to branch out. kthurn@bektel.com
It depends on my project – right now I am in love with orange, but I always have a soft spot for celadon green, and purples.
I seem to go through meters of Kona Snow! Love it!
I am enthralled with Kona Ash. Ash with Navy. Ash with Red. Ash with Yellow. Ash with Gold.
Elaine
I love the aqua, greens, and all the grays. Pink might have to be included, too, but not today.
Kona Snow is always in my fabric stash!
