More Than Twenty Three Hexagons
Ready to learn how you can create lovely free motion quilting with Catherine Redford?
Catherine’s personal style of teaching quilting is now available on DVD. This informative video is set up with easy to follow along instructions for every level of quilter. Catherine offers advice on all the tools needed for successful quilting , special advice to help keep your breathing consistent while quilting ( this one was surprising to me and I will be trying it out), and how to get ready to successfully free motion quilt without marking!
This adorable example has a Hobbit’s eating schedule free motion quilted between wavy lines that were quilted using a walking foot. Catherine points out where certain techniques ( the walking foot for the wavy lines) are easier to use! This is very helpful for all quilters! Why stress when you do not have to…quilting is fun!
Catherine goes through a variety of tracing design patterns to help you gain the confidence you need to take on clamshells, pebbles, flames, hearts and flowers.
Then she takes you to the machine to show how you can apply those same designs that you practiced drawing and add them to your quilt following the same steps. Pictured here is the sweet clamshell design.
In celebration of her new Modern Machine Quilting dvd release, Catherine is running a giveaway over on her blog. Simply go to her website and leave a comment. Aurifil threads are my favorite. A fun giveaway, thank you! JO
I love as much FMQ and straight line, with Aurifil of course.
I usually like swirls but have been incorporating a few more straight lines:) Always trying new things!
Have started using Aurifil and love it!!!
I use Aurifil exclusively. Love it.
I have not been brave enough to try FMQ yet but I do designs using my walking foot. I have done car logos, beakers, spider webs.
I use Aurifil. Thanks for the chance to win some thread.
I like straight line quilting but I want to try free motion in my next quilt 🙂
My heart goes out to free motion quilting but I ‘m not there yet…
I am very new to machine free motion. I have done about 9 quilts but consider myself new at it. To become very good, it will take a lot of practice. I do mostly sippling, swirls, and circles that do not require marking the quilt but I long to be better. Love Aurifil.
Looking forward to checking out the new DVD
I like free motion quilting.
I’m a nervous FMQ beginner so plan to learn techniques this year. I tend to stick to straight lines, zigzag or echo quilting. I need to practice more!
I like FMQ with heavier Aurifil and straight-line with less heavy.
I’m just starting to do free motion quilting & enjoying the process! Using my first purchase of Aurifil thread & loving the #50 Steel Grey for handstitching my Kaffe Fassett hexies together …smoothest stitching ever!! I’m a new fan!! 💎💎💎
Whatever design works for quilt pattern.
I’ve been practicing FMQ and really understand why all the pros say to sketch first to learn the design you want to stitch. It really does help. I have a long way to go but it is so much fun.
What a great giveaway!!
That’s more than senbisle! That’s a great post!
Love love aurifil thread and I would like to win both gifts.
Thanks
Edwina parsons
I free motion some, but I love the clean look of the straight lines.
I love just about all quilting styles. Often I use straight line because I feel more confidant with it. FMQ is a style I definitely need more help with and this DVD sounds perfect!
I like straight line quilting!
Thank you for the tutorials!
I just pieced my first quilt with Aurifil and will quilt it with Aurifil. Love the way the thread works with my machine. I will quilt with a combo of walking foot and free motion.
Aurifil is my go to thread for piecing and quilting
I just started using Aurifil thread for piecing and I love it!
My preblom was a wall until I read this, then I smashed it.
I love straight line quilting, and spirals, and anything that can be done with the walking foot and have just started to teach myself FMQ and am about to start using rulers too.
I love to FMQ, but I definitely need improvement!
If I’m doing the quilting, I like straight line. If I’m paying someone, I like lots of swirls and feathers.
I prefer free motion quilting.
My favorite quilting is any time I can use my walking foot!
I enjoy free motion, I like walking foot quilting but the quickest that I prefer is machine embroidered quilting.
I like both types of quilting – straight line and FM. It all depends on the quilt.
I like fm but need to practice and learn a lot more. Thank you for sharing this great quilting info.
I’m a huge fan of straight line quilting. I’m learning some basic fmq motifs, however, I still lean into clean lines.
I like free motion motifs and spiral quilting.
Aurfil thread is the best! Thanks for the giveaway and your tutorial.
LOVE BOTH STRAIGHT+FMQ FOR MY QUILT PROJECTS! THANK YOU FPR A NEAT GIVEAWAY!
This video looks wonderful! Love all kinds of quilting both straight line and especially free motion. It gives your work personality.
Beautiful threads, love Aurifil 😉 I love free motion
I love looking at all the FMQing going on out there. I like trying that and ruler work, I’m just not good at it for now. I definitely need to log more practice hours.
I mostly use straight line quilting or organic lines.
I like to FMQ but mostly do just stippling. I need to get better at it!
I prefer free motion quilting. Would love to win these beautiful threads!
I prefer free motion quilting. You don’t have to turn the quilt as often.
i LOVE TO FREE MOTION QUILT!!! especially with Aurifil! 🙂
I am getting better at free motion quilting. My recent project turned out very well.
I recently used an Aurifil variegated thread on a bright batik quilt. I would love to win the soft colors in this giveaway
I heard Catherine talk in Houston! I love her work. And I use nothing but Aurifil thread. These are lovely colors!
I do straight line quilting and need to learn more–Aurifil thread is wonderful—thanks for the chance to win these great colors…
I normally do straight line quilting but I would LOVE to be able to free motion quilt! Thanks for the chance to win!
I’ve been practicing my FMQ, doing feathers and more, and love it. It’s fun to be inspired by designs, and to create my own. And Aurifil is my favorite for it.
FMQ is my favorite part of the whole quilt-making process!
I have only done straight line quilting so far. 2016 is going to see me doing some FMQ!
I like simple walking foot designs like wavy lines and spirals but I am learning to love fmq as well
Straight line until I learn other techniques on my domestic machine.
I love seeing the FMQ…but have only tried practice things so far! 🙂 I have stitched in the ditch mostly..and would looove to learn to do more. thanks for chance tow in your Give-a-way too! 🙂
I really like free motion quilting or tying my quilts…..happyness04431@yahoo.com
I like free motion best, but am still working to get it like I want.
I like to do free motion the best, but have started doing some ruler work on my domestic as well.
I find quilting with my walking foot easier but I love the variety in fmq and I would like to improve and use it more often.
Could definitely use some more Aurifil!
I usually do straight line but now with aurifil, I’m trying some FMQ and wavy lines with the walking foot. I crave aurifil!!!
I do straight line quilting because that is all I know how to do. 2016 is they year of trying new styles!
I mostly hand quilt and would love to learn FMQ!!
I have always done straight-line machine quilting but for the past couple of weeks I’ve been trying some free-motion quilting. I really enjoy free-motion quilting but need a lot more practice!
Love Aurifil for piecing and now planning to use for fmq. A great giveaway!
I like free motion quilting and am still learning. I will do organic straight lines with my free motion foot but I don’t like walking foot quilting (boring).
I like straight line, but on some projects, esp. with childrens fabrics, I will follow around different elements to make it textured and fluffy. I don’t do dense quilting.
I do more straight line work but I like to FMQ smaller projects
Aurifil 2600 is my go to thread!
I prefer to do straight line machine quilting and hand quilting
The only machine quilting I have been able to do is straight line, so that is my favorite and “go to” quilting style. I would love to win so I can learn something else to use and to try out AUrifil thread!
I’m thinking the rest of this winter will encompass lots of machine quilting. It sounds like Catherine has some great ideas that I could apply to a cupboard of UFO’s.
I’m a mixed quilter and use both straight line with a walking foot and free motion quilting. Often with free-motion, I leave the feed dogs up for better control.
Free motion quilting is my favorite method, but I fail miserably at it. I have tried and tried. Sigh. So I resort to straight line or wavy lines in my quilting projects. I need this DVD!
I usually do straight line quilting but have done some meandering quilting as well.
I have done straight line, but am trying free motion.
I love to free motion – swirls and feathers and such – lots of fun! And always with Aurifil!
Straight line quilting is all I’ve done so far,but I am learning Fmq. Thank you for the chance to win!

Free motion quilting is my favorite and I love using Aurifil thread! Thanks for the giveaway.
So far, I’ve only done straight line quilting–but I think Catherine’s DVD could really stretch my creativity! Thanks so much for the thread giveaway. I always use Aurifil and have been wanting to give some variegated thread a try!
I have only been successful with straight line quilting so far. I love Aurifil thread. Thanks for the chance to win!
I really like free motion but my skills are so lacking. I should be better but I keep working at it.
I’d like to try the variegated one. It looks like moon, pearls, and the shiny oyster shells.
I haven’t don’t much free motion, but my favourite projects use a combination of walking foot and fmq.
Love using aurifil thread for piecing and quilting! Thanks for a great give away!
I like the look of the variegated threads, I would love to give them a try. Thanks for the chance to win!
My favorite way to quilt is free motion and I do both line stitching and various patterns that I have learned over the years.
Currently, my favorite way to quilt is to have someone else do it. However, since this is quite expensive, I have been wanting to start quilting my own but I do not have the skills to do so. Thank you for sharing the info about Catherine’s DVD, I think it will be helpful in learning how to master the art of quilting for myself. I have not used Aurifil thread before and would love to give it a try.
I love free motion – just learning, so I am far from being proficient! Straight line has been the most successful! Every day I am learning more! Love Aurifil! Thanks for the chance to win!
Thanks for the great giveaway! I’ve been lucky to see some of Catherine’s work up close and it’s wonderful and I only use Aurifil!
I mainly use straight-line quilting with my walking foot. I also like serpentine quilting. I’ve tried some FMQ, but do not feel comfortable or satisfied with my results. Also, I do not like dense quilting. I like my quilts to drape nicely and be a little fluffy. I’ve found that Quilter’s Dream Wool batting gives great stitch definition and more loft than cotton batting.
Thanks for the opportunity to win some lovely Aurifil threads!
I love to free motion-stippling is for me. Would love to learn better ways though.
I like straight line piecing with Aurifil 50 wt thread. Thanks for the giveaway!
I did some free motion quilting years ago and want to try it again. Somehow I got away from it. This dvd would be a great start back to my favourite quilt method. thanks for the chance to win the thread. It would be great.
My favorite is straight line right now. I have only just begun to explore free motion. Thanks!
I’m fairly comfortable with straight line quilting but would really love to try more free motion.
I love Aurifil thread and would love to win some. Thanks for the chance to win.
I do mostly straight line quilting but am trying. To learn free motion.
I am a newbie so stick to straight lines at present xx
I totally love this thread! I love to do straight line quilting, grids, lines…organic. Thank you for the giveaway!!
Straight lines or more so pantographs on my shortarm machine. FMQ is on my to-do list! Thanks so much!
I do mostly straight line because I admit I am just not very good at FMQ!
Aurifil threads ARE the best. I tried using serger thread as it was less expensive, but oh the gunk that builds up and I had to refill the bobbins so frequently! I tried other brands but they didn’t work out either. Auriful glides thru my machine on to the fabric. I am doing my first straight line piece just now. It’s going pretty well. I’m glad to be able to do both straight line and FMQ on my domestic machine. Thanks so much for the chance!
I like the look of free motion quilting but so far I’m sticking with straight line quilting
I love freemotion quilting
I love Aurifil thread and I have a good amount of solids but I have never seen the variegated. The wool 12 wt is yummy!
I like a mix of free motion and linear quilting. I let the quilt talk to me
I like to do straight line. Free motion is a skill I need to learn.
I am working on straight line quilting now and it is fun. I hope to some day master both. I have a dream. . .
I like free motion quilting the best. It seems the most forgiving. The times I’ve done straight line quilting, if your quilt is not flat and completely square, there will be tucks! But with FMQ, those little problems don’t seem to come up! I have bee friends that are totally scared of FMQ, but I continue to encourage them to try it with donation quilts. I know they will find it just as liberating as I do!
I have recently made the switch to Aurifil and am very happy with the quality of the thread and how well it performs. FMQ is a lot of fun and great thread makes it more so.
I can’t pick a favorite – it depends on the quilt – both have their advantages!
I really love straight line quilting, and its the only kind that I know how to do, but I also love free motion! depends on the quilt but anything that makes the quilt cuddly is okay in my books.
I love all different kinds of quilting. It depends on the look and feel of each quilt.
I am really new to quilting and have only tried straight lines so far. I can’t wait to try something a little more creative and adventurous!!
I love free motion quilting the best. Feathers are my favorites, even though I’ve not perfected them yet.
My novice skill is at the straight line quilting level, adding wavy lines too.
Thank you.
I like free motion quilting
I have used the Aurefil thread for many years for piecing — it is my favorite. Nice to learn of other methods.
I am learning to fmq on my Babylock Tiara II. Using tons of thread!
I’ve only done straight line quilting but want to try free motion.
Love Aurifil threads! Thanks for the giveaway.
i love the ease of FMQ, but I also love the precision of straight line quilting. It’s a toss up!
I’ve always struggled with quilting on my domestic so I took a long arm class and started renting time on a long arm. I love it! It’s so easy. Now I want to go back and put what I’ve learned there to use on my domestic.
I love pretty thread!
I’ve got quite a nice selection of Aurifil 50 wt colors that I like to use for pieceing and FMQ. It’s my go to thread:)
I forgot to mention that I love fmq on my domestic machine.
I like straight line quilting.
Enjoy using your threads.
I haven’t tried quilting yet, so no favorite style… yet. 🙂
I love Aurifil thread!! It gives me the nicest stitch and doesn’t give me any machine problems with lint or breaking thread – it is definitely my favourite to work with!
I like to do both styles of machine quilting – depends on what my project requires to make it looking how I want it to. 🙂
