THE INTERVIEW
You started quilting nearly 10 years ago. What first drew you to the craft?
My Mom quilted and sewed, so I grew up watching her and when I started having kids of my own I finally took the plunge and learned how to quilt. It was love at first stitch!
Since getting started, you’ve grown into a published author, pattern designer and fabric designer. Did you ever imagine this all happening when you first started and how do you feel this has changed your life for the better?
A lot of great things have happened in the past 9 years! I feel blessed for every opportunity that has come my way, and no, I could have never imagined I’d be doing what I do now 9 years ago! I sure love what I do, and I hope I get to design more, but also still enjoy sewing and quilting years down the road! I feel more well rounded as an individual and mother by designing and working, and the opportunity to work from home while my kids are little is really the best.
Dixie is your fourth collection for Windham Fabrics. Does it feel different to create things using your own fabric?
Yes definitely! A lot more thought goes into the projects when I’m working with my own fabric, and I can’t help but think about the design process as I sew with them…each one of those prints had to start somewhere! It’s fun and amazing to watch them go from an idea or a sketch to real life fabric I can use!
What inspired this collection?
The inspiration for this collection came initially from a feedsack prints I bought at a swap meet while I lived in Ohio. It has a more Southern feel to me, I can picture this collection being used for decor or quilts hanging out on a big screen porch in the South. The colors are a bit more saturated than my last, but it’s also a summer collection…so the brighter the better and I love it!
What do you love most about Aurifil threads? Do you have a go-to color or thread weight?
Aurifil works like a dream in my sewing machines… and lasts forever! My go-to is obviously my huge cones of white 2024 50 wt. for piecing…I’m always a little proud when I finally run out of a cone of thread! My favorite color Aurifil is the 2830 (50 wt). It’s a beautiful Aqua, Sea foam color that I use all the time!
What is your favorite project made with fabrics and threads from Dixie?
I’m actually sewing it right now… it’s a baby quilt for my daughter that is due in a couple of weeks! It’s a project from my book Growing Up Modern and I’m quilting circles on it with the colored Aurifil from the Dixie collection…it’s been really fun to make!

Allison started this blogging in 2007 as a way to keep record of the things she was making. She also started quilting around that time, so her blog has followed her journey from a brand new quilter, to a quilter that sort of knows what she’s doing. Sort of. My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 8.
I have been sewing for over 50 years. Love carrying on a family “tradition”. Colors are so inspiring and putting together combinations fills my heart.
I learned to sew from my mother. My grandmother was a professional seamstress, so I guess it’s genetic. I love quilting!
I have been sewing for 2.5 years and I taught myself!
I started sewing when I was 8. I am 73 now, so I have been sewing a long time. My mother sewed all my clothes, so she was my inspiration. When I was 8, I wanted to make her an apron for Mother’s Day. Of course she had to give lots of help. I surprised her by actually ending up with an apron. She told me years later that she had not thought it would be an apron, so she gave me fabric that wasn’t appropriate for the project. She said she had always been sorry about that. In the following years she let me sit down and make doll clothes without a pattern. I have had a love affair with sewing ever since then.
I have been sewing for 25 years!
I’ve been sewing for over 40 years. My first inspiration was probably the lovely dresses my maternal grandmother sewed for me. I am also inspired by the tactile nature of working with thread and cloth.
I learned to sew in Junior High School and made clothes for a long time. One day about 20 years ago I saw a quilt class advertised in the local paper and decided that I wanted to try making a quilt. Well, needless to say, I was hooked!
My mom taught us to sew when we were little. I think I was 5 when she taught me to hand sew. I’m 41 now. I mostly sew by machine now, quilts, bags, and clothes (in that order).
My Grandma taught me to sew….I used to watch her all the time as she made clothes for me and my sister. I didn’t know she quilted til my mom, who didn’t sew, passed away and I found a beautiful quilt by grandma in here things! Never mind how long I’ve been sewing….just say most of my life and I’ll leave out the exact number of years!!!! hahahaha
i have been sewing since I was very little. My great grandmother started me out sewing buttons. Beautiful fabrics, and the thread which is matching.

My mother began teaching me when I was about 8. She could sew anything!
I’ve been sewing (by hand) since I was around 10 or 11; I was allowed to use my mum’s old machine when I turned 12 and I haven’t looked back.
I srarted sewing, reluctantly, in grade 9 Home Ec., and dropped it after 1 more year. I was really bad at it! Then I picked it up again when expecting our first child, and sewed steadily, all our 4 children’s clothing and mine, plus things such as curtains and drapes, until I went back to work full time when our youngest was in school. After that only sporadically, stopping completely when work demands became too great. Now, having retired this September, i have started quilting, and I love it! So happy to have a hobby I love!
I learned how to use my mother’s Featherweight when I was in 6th grade. She arranged for me to take some sewing lessons from a seamstress friend who helped me make a pleated skirt for school.
Since then most of my sewing has been repairs & hemming & household projects. However, 4 years ago in retirement, I took my first quilting class. What a brave new world! Sewing is a life-long skill!
My mother sewed beautifully as did her mother. I didn’t know there were quilters in the family until I inherited a quilt made by my dad’s mother!
I’ve been sewing since my mother signed me up for sewing lessons for my 12th birthday. She knew how much I loved crafty things and since she didn’t sew, she paid for lessons for me at the local Singer Sewing Center. That was more than 40 years ago and I still love to sew!

Oh gee! Was so excited with fabrics, forgot to say I started seeing around age 6 with my great aunt and her treacle machine, but picked up quilting in my 20s, and then children occupied my time until my late 40s when I picked up quilting again and have been at it ever since.

I sewed a bit when I was young — I remember taking some classes when I was 8 or 9, but I started quilting about 5 years ago. A friend convinced me to do a scrappy project with her from a tutorial on a blog. I was hooked! She hasn’t made a quilt since then, but I have made probably 50 since then.
I have been sewing off and on most of my life. I did garment sewing and home dec stuff but started quilting about 10 years ago. Now, my husband and I both quilt. 🙂

A neighbor was making rags quilts about four years ago and encouraged me to make one. Well I made one and learned a little about putting a blanket together and really loved the process, so have been teaching myself to expand from there. No sewers in my family.

Wow, I did the math…..57 years of needles, threads and fabrics. It has been a constant through the ups and downs of life. At 5, I pestered my grandmother until she taught me how to embroider like she did, then my mom taught me garment construction and the right way to use her machine after I got caught at 10 trying to use it to make Barbie clothes. The gigantic thread nest was a dead giveaway I had been up to something!
I learned how to sew after my Godmother made some curtains for me and told me I needed to learn how to sew if I wanted pillows. I love quilting, but I have made a few pillows and curtains too.

My mother was always sewing something and taught me to sew.
I have been sewing since I was a teenager and am now 40. I initially started with cross stitch and then got my own sewing machine and have been making my own clothes the last year or two.
I learnt to sew at school. I still have my very first sampler of hand embroidery.
As a teenager, I taught myself to use my mum’s Necchi sewing machine, using the embroidery cams and sewed my own clothes.
As an adult, I made my kids clothes and once they were all at school, I discovered patchwork and quilting.

Been quilting about 7 years. I started with making little doggy jackets for a skinny pound puppy we adopted, but once I got a sewing machine (the first jacket I sewed by hand!) My mom forced this tomboy to make herself a flannel nightgown. I was hooked. I sewed clothes for whoever until the late 80s when I switched to quilting.

I’ve been sewing since I was 4. My mom taught me simple cross stitch, and from there I began sewing clothing for my dolls. It’s been a lifelong hobby.

My mom sewed mostly clothes, and I did too when I discovered quilting in my 20’s. That was 40 years ago and I am still completely hooked. The fabrics, threads and methods have gotten exponentially better over the years. I love your fabric and the Aurifil threads that go with it. Such beautiful colors – and that’s what it’s all about for me – COLOR!
My mother was a beautiful seamstress and I wanted to be just like her – I would sit next to her with my tiny sewing machine!
Excited about this! I started sewing for my children and as a creative outlet (less mess than painting, and fabric and thread doesn’t dry out or have fumes!)
