THE INTERVIEW
What first drew you to to the world of sewing and quilting?
I was first drawn into sewing in my 6th grade Home Economics class. Learning to sew a simple patchwork pillow and onto more intricate garment making is how I first began. Fast forward to 1993, I took my first formal quilting class and really didn’t like it. So I took a second and fell in LOVE! It was all over at that point, the quilting but had bit me and it became a hobby, and then a business… but still remains a hobby.

Who or what has been your greatest creative inspiration?
Now that is a tough question…. I really get inspiration from all over. As far a “what”, I would have to say nature or the environment that surrounds me. I am always looking at things with a different “eye” so to speak. As far as a “who” I would have to say that Judy Niemeyer. I have been following her since the late 1990s and had always admired her designs. Since then I became a Certified Instructor for her.

How did you first get involved with Island Batik?
Well….. I have been using Island Batik fabrics for quite a while, but my first “official” design for Island Batik was launched 2015. It was my pattern “Who’s Got The Button?”. After that Island Batik and I met at Fall Quilt Market 2015 and they asked if I would like to come aboard as a designer. The timing was right and it has progressed from there.

What do you love most about Batik fabrics?
What is not to love?? Batiks are timeless, they don’t go in and out of style. They are not trendy, they mix and play well with other fabrics, they are versatile, and so much more. Each one has such variation in color and can give you a look that no other type of fabric can do. All quilters need to have batiks as part of their stash!!!

Tell us about Fresh Pick’ins. What inspired the designs?
This collection is a Signature Collection designed for me by Kathy Engle. When I selected the collection, I was drawn to the freshness of the colors, and the fruit designs. It reminded me of a Spring/Summer day! The colors are such happy colors, when you look at them you can just help but smile.

Do you have a favorite project or projects made with the collection?
Actually I do! I adore all of them… but my hands down faves are Springtime Desert and Geometrics! They are a great representation of this collection!

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
I know it was a while ago, but I can’t pinpoint the date. Back in 2013, I was an Aurifil Block of the Month Designer and I know it was way before that. What I love most about them is all the colors offered, and different weights of threads too! The variety is phenomenal. I also love that they are low lint too!

How did you go about selecting colors for Fresh Pick’ins and what excites you most about releasing the collection to the world?
Well… I wanted the thread colors to compliment and coordinate with all the yummy colors in the collection. I also wanted to use some variegated threads too! The ones that I chose are subtle but do the exactly what I hoped they would do. They accent, complement, and coordinate with every one of the fabrics that are in Fresh Pick’ins!

I love the gradation of color most about batiks. The ability to use both sides of the fabric is a big plus for me also.
I love all the wonderful colors, I love the feel of batiks and that you can use either side. They are wonderful. My favorite fabric type.
I made my first quilt with batiks last year, it is by far the most beautiful quilt top i have ever made in my craft, and i have made so very many quilts. Its funny though, for some reason, they intimidated me at first. I was not sure how i was going to work with them. Now, its all i want to use. Using batiks also expanded my craft and gave me courage to grow in my applique and more detailed work. I have to say, i have become so much more involved in my process as an artist since using them. I dont just pick prints or solids and try to find patterns to jazz up how i want a quilt to look or feel, nor do i rely on the quilting i use. I am always recommending batiks to my quilter friends when they are hesitant or think they can not possibly work them into a project. I have been wanting to make a certain project for a few months with some batiks but had to take care of my father while he was on hospice in my home, he has just passed recently. I am hoping to get started soon if i can get my funding, lol. But it will be good therapy for me and i know its going to be beautiful no matter what batiks i use. They are just all so versatile and beautiful.
i love the look of batiks and I love that both sides are usually the same so it is like working with solids.
I haven’t worked with Batiks very much, but I like the fact you can use either side of the fabric.

I love the vibrant result due to all different hues of color.
To be honest, I’ve never worked with Batiks. They have nice visual texture.
What’s not to love? I love everything about working with batiks … the quality of the fabric (tight weave), the beautiful saturated colors, it’s timeless, both sides of the fabric are the same, the crispness, and I feel it will wear much better than fabric that is not batik.
Love using Batiks 💟 In my pieces. Sometimes alone & sometimes mixing with my prints! The saturated swirl of bright colors! Such expressive color.
I haven’t worked with them yet but have a few pieces in my stash. I like that both sides of the fabric could be the “right” side. 🙂
I love the tight weave that batiks have. They don’t stretch much on the bias.

What’s not to love?…the colors, the exotic prints, the fact that it doesn’t ravel, and more.
Batiks are easy to work with–they don’t fray, cut with nice clean lines, great for applique and sonderful colors. What’s not to like!
I love the colors and designs of the fabric.
Gorgeous fabrics, and I love the threads that she has chosen to go with them. I especially love the variegated orange thread: my favorite!!
I love Batiks and am slowly building a stash. I love the colors and how they can be mixed and matched.
wow these are wonderful projects I love the quality if the fabrics. It is such a pleasure to work with
There is SO much to love about batiks!!
Because of how batiks are made, each piece is actually a unique work of art!
No two blocks (or zippered bags, or whatever your project!) will be exactly identical to any other… this gives a very special artisan/artist touch to your work!
The fabric has a wonderful hand… batiks feel substantial yet luxurious!
It’s wonderful to work with, too, because of it not fraying like ordinary fabric. *And*, both sides of the fabric are unique and useable!
I love the depth and richness of the colors of batik fabrics!
When I first discovered batiks I fell in love with their richness… I collected batiks, but didn’t start to sew with them. I sensed how unique and extraordinary batiks were, and I think I felt a little intimidated (these were actual ART fabrics!! I needed a worthy project!!).
I finally cut a little out of my collected yardage to make a “sock sack” drawstring knitting bag as a very special gift for a loved one… finally, a worthy project! I discovered how *wonderful* it was to work with batiks! … So I next ventured into using more precious stash batiks to make a series of zippered bags as gifts… Again, a wonderful experience, and I was struck by how absolutely *unique* each bag was! Batik fabric took an ordinary item, and elevated it to art/artisan level!!
That gave me courage to make a special gift quilt with batiks… and again, ordinary was elevated to extraordinary!
Yes!… I love batiks!
