Modern Marks

Today we are very excited to be a part of Christa Watson’s Modern Marks Blog Hop! Christa is one of our cherished Aurifil Designers, and we are thrilled that she released her debut fabric line with Benartex Fabrics at Fall Quilt Market! Thank you to our Social Media Coordinator, Hilary Jordan, for stitching up a quilt for the blog hop. <3

Modern Marks features a wonderful assortment of colors and prints. They play together very well, but can also be fantastic basics in your stash. I chose to make the Cobblestone quilt, a pattern by Fat Quarter Shop. It is a quilt pattern I’ve made previously, and I knew it would stitch up quickly and beautifully! A must for sewing around the holidays.

Quilt

Making this quilt was my first time working with fabrics by Benartex. They are incredibly smooth, have minimal fraying, and the colors are absolutely vibrant! My goal was to make sure no two of the same color values were touching. A great way to check this is to snap a picture of your blocks and edit the picture to black and white. You’ll be able to see the contrast and adjust accordingly prior to stitching the blocks together.

Quilt Full

For the quilting I did a “Waving Grid”, it is by far one of my favorite walking foot techniques that I learned from Christa during a workshop she hosted for the Houston Modern Quilt Guild. It is more forgiving than straight line quilting, and it stitches up fast!

When it came time to select a thread for quilting, the mix of prints gave me the perfect opportunity to use Aurifil #3817 Marrakesh. The variegated thread features yellows, reds, blues, and greens that complemented the fabrics wonderfully.

  3. I really don’t know what I would make with this collection. A tote bag would be fun, fast, and nice and bright. Thanks for the chance to win.

  4. I’d love to win, of course — I use Aurifil almost exclusively. I really like the chunky blocks of your sample quilt. I’m leaning toward tote bags with this yummy fabric collection.

  5. This would make a beautiful spring table runner I think. Fun fabrics and colors! Thanks for the giveaway!

  6. Considering there are soon to be six grands … I bet it would be made into something for one or all…..lol!

  14. I would love to make a throw quilt for a nephew or niece. They all love lounging on the couch watching movies, so it would be well used!

  15. With all the wonderful colors of this fabric collection, anything is possible! Love your cobblestone quilt- really shows off the saturated colors! What a wonderful add to anybody’s quilt collection! Thank you for sharing, Susan

  16. These fabrics are so fun, they would make great reading pillows-a pocket pillow that includes a book and a stuffed animal. My friends and I make them for the kids at our local homeless shelter.

  17. The fabrics are so bright and cheery that I would make a lap quilt for one of my great grandchildren.

  18. currently, I’m making lots of Lazy Girl Designs zip bags. The bright colors in this collection would be fun to use for these!

  19. I would use it in the quilt that my 6 year old grandson just designed and requested. It is a lovely drawing of a garden scene.

  20. The colors of this fabric group and the threads are wonderful. This would be a great gift for my daughter-in-law to start learning about all the quilting fun.

  21. I would make several small quilts. I am trying to gain confidence with machine quilting, so I am making a lot of smaller quilts (lap and twin size) and then giving them away as gifts. No one seems to care whether my stitches are perfect or not, so I will keep on doing this and eventually I may have a wow moment when I look at my finished quilt.

  22. Great colors, and I love Marakesh, too. It’s perfect for quilting multi-colored quilts. I probably would do a baby size quilt. Thanks.

  23. Such a pretty collection of fabrics. I’d make a new tote bag, perhaps several, so that I can give some away.

  24. The cobblestone quilt would be a great way to showcase both the fabric and the thread, so that is what I would make!

  25. Love the saturated colors in this collection. I would make a plus sign quilt. And maybe some Kennel Quilts too.

  26. Thankyou Hilary for sharing Cobblestones, indeed it’s so vibrant. With the Piece and Quilt threads I will finish a table topper also using Christa’s wavy grid quilting. It’s so forgiving:) With the Modern Marks bundle probably a summer weight quilt for my car. I like to display my work in my empty space/back seat.
Thank you Benartex and Aurifil for your generosity.

  34. I’m so surprised to see so many of you saying that you never used Benartex fabrics before! I’ve used them for more than 20 years! Is it because you didn’t perceive them as making “modern” fabrics? Your quilt is beautiful and bright. Thanks to Benartex for making the giveaways possible.

  35. I just love the variety of colours. Thinking I might do a rainbow HST Quilt pattern the colours are so vibrant for kids
