This earthy collection was inspired by the landscape in Colorado, where Signature Collection designer Kari Nichols of Mountainpeek Creations resides! This collection, designed by Kathy Engle for Kari, offers two color palettes – one with organic browns and greens and the other with majestic purples, greens and aquas.
While Kari does not have a coordinating Aurifil Thread collection, she loves using Aurifil threads in her projects and has a few favorites that coordinate well with this line!

THE INTERVIEW
How did you first connect with Island Batik?
As Manager of Holly’s Quilt Cabin and part of an active shop hop, I had the chance to work with Island Batik creating exclusive shop hop fabrics. That lead to creating exclusive Holly’s Quilt Cabin and Mountainpeek Creations fabrics. They are so wonderful to work with, it is a true pleasure to have Kathy Brett Engle to create and Caleb Willis to see it through to completion, along with the rest of the wonderful staff!
What do you love most about working with batik fabrics?
Batik fabric is so crisp! I love that the Island Batik fabrics have such a firm hand. They make sewing a perfectly flat quilt top entirely possible!
I also love the color blends. To be able to bring so many colors in beginning with just one fabric is amazing.
Can you tell us a bit more about this collection and what it means to you?
This is truly Colorado fabric. From the Columbines to the mountains and the Dragonflies to the Aspen leaves, it is truly representative of my beautiful state. The Ravens that hang out around my house make me smile and then I get to see them in fabric too!
Do you have a favorite project or projects made with this collection?
I think the Shadowbox quilt is beautiful. It’s one of my favorite patterns and shows off so many of the beautiful prints. Escalate brings in lots of different colors in small pieces. Slice of life has the gorgeous winter colors. So many choices!!!
When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about working with them?
We chose to bring Aurifil threads into the store many years ago as one of our employees had all good things to say about them. After using them, I have to agree. The lack of lint, beautiful colors and consistency are all top notch. They are the only threads I piece with!
Do you have any tips for using Aurifil 100% Cotton Threads with Island Batik Cotton fabrics?
I only use 100% cotton thread with 100% cotton fabric. The Aurifil colors work well with all the Island Batik colors and make up beautifully.
What is coming up next for you, where can we find you this year?
I’m hoping to begin working on an original fabric line in the future. There is so much to learn and I’ve just scratched the surface. I’m sure you’ll be able to find me at Holly’s Quilt Cabin or behind my sewing machine unless I’m at market sharing booth space with Island Batik!

Kari Nichols is manager of Holly’s Quilt Cabin, a large quilting store in the Denver Metro area. Being a native Coloradoan, and from a family of seamstresses, Kari grew up enjoying many quilts. The love of color and design was first shown in stained glass. Her stained glass pieces received awards and can be found in many homes. When a favorite piece was broken, re-creating it in fabric was the logical choice. This choice led to a career change and joining the Quilt Cabin family. I live near Vancouver BC so my collection would have lots of greens, blues and purples to represent mountains, forests, and ocean.
My favorite location is where I live, Northern Idaho. We have it all, green mountains, blue rivers and crystal lakes with beautiful grasslands thrown in. Who doesn’t love that combination
My favorite place is Huntington Beach, CA, so it would obviously have the colors of the sand, sea, and sun, but I’d include batiks to represent the tiles and bricks of the old buildings of downtown–especially the library, and fabric to represent colorful flowers grown in gardens there, and some grays and gray-whites for the ever-present seagulls.

Beautiful fabric -‘ wonderful quilts – batiks are the best! My colors would include greens from the fresh pine needles – yellow from the wild blooming Jasmine & the magentas of the azalea blooms- not to leave out the white & plum colors of the blackberry bushes!
My batik “collection” contains almost every color somewhere in it. I’ve always loved rich color.
It would have vibrant nature colors. The clear blue of water, river rocks, trees, flowers, sunshine. Colors you would want to run barefoot through.
I live by a river, and I can see the hill close behind the river. Sew, my fabric would have lots of blue, green and brown. Thanks!
My favorite locations seem to all include lakes/streams/waterfalls, mountains, trees, birds, blue sky with some wonderful cloud formations in the day and dark sky with lots of stars at night.
I would design a collection around all the beautiful bright floral colors one sees at Butchart Gardens. I’d want the colors to be the bright beauties that one can see there.

Here in the heart of the Hill Country of Central Texas, we have a plethora of wild flowers in the Spring, and lots of rolling green hills.
My favorite location is where I live in Montana’s beautiful Rocky Mountains! Love the greens+blues of Firs against the sky>so pretty just like the Aurifil Threads!

It would have to be a combination of the lake we live on with the woods behind – such calming, earthy tones. Then of course there’s the buffalo farm behind the woods… Love the Mountainpeek patterns by the way!
This collection would work anywhere from the beach to the mountains. Beautiful colors!
My favorite place is Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I would design a fabric grouping depicting all of the old churches, barns, cabins and the mill as well as the mountains and the wildlife. My colors would be lots of earth tones, greens and sky blue.
Living in Northern Nevada high desert, my colors would be greys, purples, blue, browns and dusty greens. Maybe some turquoise thrown in. Thank you for the opportunity to win. Zig Zag really caught my eye.
I live in and love southern California where flowers grow all year. I can be on the beach or in the mountains in 30 minutes. Pretty much covers the rainbow but my favorite color pallets are blues and greens, earth tones and autumn leaves. I love Shadowboxes and it is so beautiful in those colors.
My favorite location is the town where I went to college — Blacksburg, VA. There are beautiful mountains in that area and the colors in the fall are spectacular. With the school colors of orange and maroon, I would envision a fall colored collection with prints including leaves and something related to mountains. Beyond that, I really don’t know, which is why I leave fabric designing to the professionals!
I love flowers especially roses and have a variety of tea roses, so would design with rich earth tones and bright floral colours.
My home faces West overlooking the Mississippi River at a point where it is three miles wide. Blues, greys. with splashes of warm colors and various shades of green. The flat top hills are verdant green and shades of taupe when the sun is low in the sky. It is so tranquil and one of the most awesome water views in America. The view looks great with every color!
My favorite location is the beach. My collection would include ocean blues and greens. Sandy colors, cream for the foam that sometimes comes off the ocean and a sky blue.
My favorite place is the beach at Mustang Island. So it would have to be in the beautiful sea and sand colors.

Good challenge … favourite location would be where I live ….. amidst cedars, the odd maple and birch tree, green grass, ponds, streams, blue sky overhead, birds, deer, . So the colours would be nature’s palate of greens, browns, blues, splashes of reds and yellows, dabs of black and charcoal (shadows). Oh it would be glorious! If I could design a collection around my favorite place (the Smoky Mountains) I would use greens, purples, blues, for the mountains and streams with oranges, yellows, greens, golds for the fall tree colors and use leaves, pinecones, acorns, cedar leaves for the design elements!
I would design a collection around the family cabin in the Canadian woods. I would have browns and greens from the woods and the blues, silvers and yellows of the lake.
I would design something in purple/blue hues to match the bluebonnets of Texas where I live. The spring flowers are so beautiful when blooming.
I think I’d love to have a collection designed around the colors of the southwest. So beautiful.
My collection would have to be the colors of Montana in the fall. Oranges, muted yellows, deep purple, burnt red, dark green, golden brown. sounds lovely! Thank you for asking.
My collection would be colors from the zoo, white for the polar bear, black for the panthers, and teals and blues from the peacocks.
Where? It would be the glorious fall colors found in the northeast, the flaming sugar maples, the russets and golds of the oaks, the deep brown/gray/blacks of tree bark.
Since this collection takes care of the mountains, I think I would look to the prairie for inspiration…green, gray, pops or red and fuschia along with golden wheat fields, blue sky and some earthy brown.
Blue for sky, lighter blue for babbling brooks, with greens and browns from treetops to the forest floor.
Based on ocean and sand colors and textures.
My collection would have weeping willows, rolling hills, and steamboats.
I would have a tropical floral theme because Hawaii is my favorite destination.

My view is of the Cascade Mts, -snow capped in winter, green & brown in summer. Sunrises and reflected sunsets could be a theme for me.

Because I love gardens, my collection would be filled with pretty much every color of the rainbow for the flowers; browns, grays, and greens, for the trees and bushes; and various shades of blue for the sky. Hmmmm. I have a beautiful picture of them in my mind already.

I loved living in the mountains, and had 3 gorgeous lilac bushes, plus peonies and other flowers. So, purple, magenta, pink, the blue sky, and the deep blue night sky with lots of stars, plus some deep green for the trees and leaves. And black for the bears.
My favorite place would be a mountain cabin with a babbling brook running beside it.
My favorite location would have to be my family room so it would look warm and cozy with soft colors.
It would be of the woods behind our home in the fall with all of the beautiful autumn colors.

I would design the fabric around the area I live in Wisconsin…the woods, the rolling hills, the green pastures. Greens, browns, golds with grasses, leaves and some of the animals that we share the land with.
I live in the Shenandoah Valley and love all the beautiful fall colors and motifs.
My favorite location is the Yucatan, so there would be lots of bright clear colors -yellow, blue, orange, green, red, and aqua with palm fronds, ocean waves and other images from the area.
I live in between the mountains and the ocean so I would choose colors from both, lush greens, beautiful clear blues, yellow sands and rich browns.
My favorite location is northern Wisconsin or Michigan. I love the colors of the lakes and trees.
My favorite spot is the beach, so my line would have many shades of blue & aqua with some tans to represent the sand.
My favorite location is home! It’s where my cat is, where my quilty stuff is, where my garden is, where my roses (12 bushes in a row) are, where the cooking smells delight and where family drops in. Batiks make up 90% of my stash…so Island Batiks are also here!!!!
I’d design a collection of Vermont, with blues and greens as the primary colors, with some black and white for the birch trees.
My favorite collection would be in color range of lavender, purple, blue, and mauve.
My collection would have mountains and water with animals from both.
My collection would be inspired by my favorite lighthouse view from the beach. It would include soft browns, greens and blues.
It would look much like this one since I love Jackson, WY. I would have a few more icy shades (whites and grays) and a couple more blues for the Snake River and sky.
It is so hard to decide on a favorite place to design a collection. I guess right now I would pick colors from the view I have enjoyed for many years out my large kitchen window. It would include greens for the trees and grass; varying shades of pinks and reds for the roses, crepe myrtle, and cardinals; blue for the sky and blue jays; and a little bit of brown for the deer and foxes.
My favorite place to design would be the Rocky Mountains and their woodlands!

I live by the ocean and could easily design a fabric line around the colors of the sea.
I live in the northwest so my quilt would have the blues of water and sky and the greens of the grass and trees plus purples from some of the flowers that grow so well here.
