August AURIFIL ARTISAN SHOWCASE – Foundation Paper Piecing

Today we are thrilled to share the next monthly showcase from members of our 2021-2022 Aurifil Artisan team! During the month of August we asked the team to make a project using Foundation Paper Piecing as a part of the construction process. As always we are blown away by the gorgeous creations they made and hope that you find a bit of FPP inspiration.

Pam Holland – “Eddie is a wild crow who thinks he belongs in the family. He’s been the subject of quite a few of my quilts in the past. I’m not a great fan of FPP quilts, however this was a challenge and I enjoyed the end result. I used 50 weight for sewing up and quilting and 12 weight for the added embellishment to his body. It’s a fun quilt to make.”

Allie McCathren – “I love using 50wt Aurifil to foundation paper piece! For my new Deco Tiles Pattern, I’m making blocks with Speckled fabric, and matching each one with an Aurifil color. The 50wt is thin enough to make folding the papers and getting flat seams easier, while strong enough to withstand the removal of papers after the top is pieced.”

Sue de Vanny – “So here, although not finished yet, because this is not my normal genre and I’m a lot slower at this is my Aurifil Artisan August Challenge. Yep Paper Piecing, I’ve done it before admittedly a few years ago now and I do enjoy it. The pattern I found on Etsy called ‘Atomic Bombshell’ using the fabrics I just adore from Tim Holtz latest collection. Anyhow I have enlarged it from lap size to single bed size I think?? So using Aurifil 50wt thread for the piecing, it’s been such a treat to revisit this technique and I can’t wait to see it completed.”

Sarah Ruiz – “This is my Notes to Self quilt, originally designed for the QuiltCon Together fabric challenge. I had been meaning to make a larger version ever since, and am happy to have finally gotten it done this month! This throw-size version uses Century Solids from Andover Fabrics, and of course Aurifil thread! I used the same 50 wt light beige color for both piecing and quilting, and love the result. I have written a pattern for this quilt that will be available August 30.”

Audrey Esarey – “Starting a new FPP project is so much fun! For this peek at my new design, I’m piecing using 50 wt in color 2021, which is neutral and matches the snow fabric perfectly!”

Karen Foster – “Foundation Paper Piecing comes naturally for some makers and they love it. Since I do not fall into this category, an open mind was necessary and fortunately the perfect project presented itself at the The Threadhouse Virtual Retreat. “

Bhiravi Rathinasabapathi – “I am a newbie when it comes to FPP, so when I saw that this month’s Artisan Challenge was FPP, I jumped on the opportunity for a little practice! Here, I made mini FPP quilt blocks, and turned them into quilted coaster. This tutorial will show you how to scale any FPP quilt block pattern down to size, and turn it into a finished coaster. I went quite simple with mine, but you can make tiny and intricate blocks with FPP! Check it out here (https://strawberrycreekquilts.com/blogs/blog/fpp-mini-quilt-block-coasters-tutorial).”

Henrik Müller – “I designed quite a few FPP patterns but back when I made the “Swiss Machine Block” I made a bunch of samples. I decided to combine 4 of them to a center for a round robin I was attending. The center was shipped off to the United Kingdom and 3 lovely quilters added a border each. I am planning on adding a final border but you know how it is: Projects keep coming up and WIP piles grow. Sucks to be me 😀 Anyway here is the work in progress… The center is made by yours truly. The first border is made by Julia @ jainaorganasolo the second border is made by Emma @ emberella6383 the third border is made by Nicky @ beingnicky

Jen Belnap – “I made this fun FPP rose with some of my favorite Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cottons. This ombre pink gets all the heart eyes! I can’t wait to share the quilt that this rose block is going in!”

Jennie Pickett – Clover & Violet – “Aurifloss is the perfect accent to a foundation pieced block. I just love how the stitches really add to the detail of even the more simple designs. For this block I used three strands of gray Aurifloss to outline my #happyhomeblock and it really made the fussy cut squares stand out!

Martha Woollard – “Show up quilt, awaiting words – Show Up – Breathe – Do Your Best – Be Kind – Learn – Repeat. All made using the freezer paper method of foundation paper piecing.”

Eliane Bergmann – “Using my popular Misty Mountains quilt pattern as the starting point, I created a Foundation Paper Pieced pattern to create coasters!”
