40wt AuriLove: the Island Batik Ambassador Thread Challenge

We know that Aurifil 50wt has become a go-to for many thanks to its thin, strong versatility. A sewing room staple, it’s often used for a variety of techniques like piecing, appliqué, or EPP. But, what about Aurifil 40wt? Slightly heavier than 50wt, but just as lustrous and easy-to-use, it has become the unsung hero.

Did you know that when Aurifil was founded back in 1983, 40wt was our very first featured thread? It was heralded and widely used for construction and embellishment in high fashion, luxury bed linens and interior design, luxury automobile interiors, and more. It was designed for use with industrial sewing machines, which makes it a perfect companion for techniques like free motion quilting, longarm quilting, apparel and bag construction, and machine embroidery.

Wound on a green spool or cone, our 40wt thread is available in all 270 of our cotton colors, ensuring that no matter what the project, there is a perfect color match. That is what drew us to feature our 40wt for the 2021 Color Builders. The program is a capsule of 12 mini-collections, each one highlighting a different hue, with three large spools of 40wt thread— a warm, a medium, and a dark.

Our color inspiration was drawn from 12 magnificent animals– Endangered Species currently in dire need of attention, advocacy, and compassion.

Today, we’re thrilled to highlight artwork created by the wonderfully talented Island Batik Ambassadors, inspired by these breathtaking creatures. We would encourage you to click through to learn more about the process used to create each piece. These makers knocked it out of the park!

Thank you to our friends at Island Batik and to all of the Ambassadors who may have stepped out of their creative comfort zones to try something new for this challenge. We applaud you!

  1. Thank you for sharing my Pink Land Iguana. The Aurifil challenges are always so much fun because they make you think out of the quilting box. Love you thread and now use it for all my machines since you added longarm thread.
