I’m excited to continue with our second Thread Matters installment for 2023. We’d intended to have this up last week, but much of our staff was in Atlanta for QuiltCon, so we’re excited to now have 2 posts to share for March… one today and one on the last Friday of the month! For now, I’ll begin by sharing my favorite uses for the Aurifil’s non 2ply threads including the six strand divisible cotton floss, a luscious 3ply cotton thread, a nylon monofilament, and a 12wt wool blend thread. There will be a giveaway this month too! Many thanks to those that contributed to last month’s review. You’ll find the Giveaway details at the end of this post.
IN REVIEW:
Aurifil offers their 100% Egyptian cotton 2ply thread in 5 weights.
Additionally, they offer a six strand divisible cotton floss, a luscious 3 ply cotton thread, a nylon monofilament, and a wool blend thread. Each thread is easily identified by the color of the spool. Learn more about Aurifil’s spool color coding and available cotton colors in our “Getting Started with Aurifil” post linked below.
Although each thread offering has a primary purpose and multiple secondary uses, every creator, maker, and thread lover has their own favorite uses for each. I’m excited to share my favorite uses paired with lessons I’ve learned to achieve excellent results with these threads!
Aurifloss
This six strand divisible Egyptian cotton floss delivered on a small wooden spool is PERFECT for cross stitching…
But my 1st choice for Aurifloss is Hand Decorative Stitches. If you love to add a bit of hand stitched fun to your “quilty” projects, consider using a few strands of Aurifloss to achieve beautiful slow-stitched details.
Tips:
- When using Aurifloss on fabric, I prefer a Bohin Size 5 Crewel/Embroidery needle. The pointed tip of this needle allows you to stitch through fabric with ease and the larger eye aids in threading.
- The same needle works wonderfully with Aurifil 12wt and 28wt threads!
- Use short lengths of thread (about the length of your forearm) to avoid excessive wear and tear or knotting when stitching.
Aurifil FORTY3 (40wt / 3ply)
Aurifil Forty3 is one strand heavier than Aurifil’s original 40wt/2ply thread. That additional strand of 40wt provides extra strength that lends itself nicely to garment sewing, topstitching, and more!
My 1st choice for Aurifil 40wt/3ply thread is Longarm quilting – free motion or edge to edge. That’s right! This 3ply thread was designed to handle the high speeds of today’s longarm quilting machines and it executes true to design. Having used it on several brands of longarm and sit-down machines, I can attest to the excellent performance of this 3ply egyptian cotton thread.
Tips:
- On the longarm consider using a Groz Beckert “MR” Multi Range Needle sizes ranging from 3.0 – 4.0 Comparable American and European sizes are 90/14 – 110/18.
- Although Aurifil Forty3 will perform wonderfully in the bobbin, there’s a benefit to using a 2ply thread in that you can fit more thread on the bobbin. For larger quilts that will endure years of use, I prefer to use Aurifil 40/2 in the bobbin.
Aurifil Monofilament
Aurifil Monofilament is a single strand of synthetic fiber made of Nylon. If Aurifil monofilament had a weight assigned it would fall between 90wt and 100wt, very fine. But because it’s synthetic, it’s very strong and because it’s nylon, it will stretch. I adore using Aurifil Monofilament (clear or smoke) for free motion quilting those fabrics that are hard to match to any one color of cotton thread.
But, my 1st choice for Aurifil Nylon Monofilament is Invisible machine appliqué. Whether you choose clear or smoke, this fine weight, strong nylon thread will work wonderfully to invisibly secure appliqué to a background. I generally combine the appliqué stitching process with the quilting step, eliminating the need to stitch the appliqué twice.
Tips:
- Use a Microtex Sharp needle size 70/10 or 80/12 for domestic machine work with Aurifil Monofilament. Use Aurifil 50wt cotton thread in the bobbin.
- On the longarm, use a similar size needle or a Groz Beckert “MR” in size 2.0 or 2.5. Use Aurifil 40wt or 50wt cotton thread in the bobbin.
- To avoid stretching the thread, be sure to decrease the top tension. We also recommend increasing stitch length when working with Monofilament.
Aurifil 12wt Wool
Aurifil 12wt Wool thread is 50% wool and 50% acrylic making it oh so strong! Whether you prefer machine or hand stitching, this primitive looking thread will beautifully adorn any project. Although I’ve enjoyed using Aurifil 12wt Wool for free motion quilting on a domestic machine…
I’m always over the top impressed with Aurifil Designer and Aurifilospher Jo Avery’s use of 12wt wool for Hand Embroidery.
Tips:
- When machine quilting with Aurifil 12wt wool, select a Topstitch needle size 90/14 or larger and continue to use Aurifil 50wt in the bobbin. The 50wt is the most cost effective weight to purchase. Your bank account will thank you.
- For hand work with Aurifil 12wt wool, I prefer to use a Bohin Crewel/Embroidery needle in size 5 or a comparable large eye straw needle.

Great mini tutorial! I know Aurifil offers an excellent cotton thread, but did not know about the 12wt wool thread and would love to try it. Also didn’t know that Aurifil made monofilament. I just finished a table runner which is black and very light beige and I was going to use a twin needle with a beige and a black thread. I had forgotten about monofilament thread, but after reading your article, I think I will use that instead. Thanks,

I love Aurifil thread (and so does my Baby Lock)! I use 50 wt for piecing, 40 wt for quilting, and 80 wt for hand appliqué. Maybe it already exists, but I would love a chart with guidance on what type needle to use with each type thread, for the different purposes. Thank you!
Can I use the Aurifil designed to use on a domestic machine with my longarm? Anything I need to be aware of to use it for quilting?
Hi Denise — absolutely!! We have many longarm quilters that use the 2ply Aurifil threads on their longarm. Of course, the FORTY3 (40wt/3ply) thread was designed for longarm speeds and is conveniently delivered on a cone, but the 2ply threads are beautiful as well. For larger quilts I would suggest you use the 40/2, 40/3 or 28/2 with Aurifil 40/2 in the bobbin. Personally, I use a Groz Beckert “MR” needle and it works perfectly to allow you to quilt in any direction without shredding or breaking. Give it a go! Remember though, although Aurifil 100% cotton is “virtually lint free”, working with cotton threads will require you to clean your bobbin area a bit more often than when working with Poly. Have fun though and reach out anytime with questions.
I would like to see more about the wool thread as I have had problems using it before.
I have always needed tips on using monofilament thread. I had no idea you could quilt with the wool thread.

I heard about Aurifloss, but haven’t used it yet. When you do all that handwork, you may as well use a thread that really shows up. I appreciate the needle suggestions for this and all the threads.

I am a hand embroiderer and historic reproduction seamstress, so I was interested to learn about Aurifloss and 12wt wool in particular. Does Aurfil have wash away for the bobbin? What weight is it? What is important to know before using it?
So much information in this article about what thread and needle combo work the best. It is also a benefit to know what other types of trheads and weights will work in the bobbin. I have used only Aurifil for hand applique and machine piecing. It gives wonderful results. I think it is time to experiment with a few options now. Thank you!
I do a lot of wool hand embroidery. Will the 12W Aurifil give me the same results as a Sue Spargo wool embroidery thread ?
Thanks for a great description of your threads. I love Aurifil but my favorite for appliqué is 80wt. It just disappears into the fabric making the appliqué stitch nearly invisible.

Because of your excellent explanation, I am going to try 3 ply 50 weight thread for my current quilting project. I’ll quilt it on my Janome 6500 Professional sewing machine. I’m excited to see how it comes out.
Love the information about the different weights and what they are best for. I use 50wt for my piecing and also if I do the quilting (basically free motion or stitch in the ditch) on my domestic machine. I always make sure that I have the same weight in my bobbin as well as the needle.

I liked learning about using a thinner weight thread in the bobbin plus being able to load more thread in the bobbin. I also liked the fact that the aurifil thread #12 was also paired with the bohn #5 needle which was quite helpful.
I just started learning to longarm, with lots of questions about bobbin threads…so it was nice to know about using regular 2 ply 40, in the bobbin with Forty3.

I have always admired Karen Millers quilting. Also Wendy Sheppard, I bought a DVD by her from Annie’s years ago and really liked her style of teaching. I’m impressed by the wool machine quilting, looks like fun! Wish I was a better quilter.

Karen was clear on needle to thread relationships which was terrific as I am never sure but I would like it if you were able to show more on 12 wt for slow stitching perhaps with some stitch examples? I am just learning to slow stitch and using 12wt so would love to learn stitches beyond basic back stitch, cross stitch etc

As someone who hand stitches a lot, especially with wool or in old English ‘crewel’, I was delighted to discover that Aurifil produces not only a 12 wt wool thread but that it is mixed with a man made thread to add strength and consistency of thickness 😊 and thank you for this brilliant tip,
‘ Stitch with the nap of the thread by knotting the last end cut and threading the needle with the opposite end.’
I had not known of the monofilament, I’ll be on the look out for that now

Thank you for drawing my attention to both the 28wt wool and the monofilament threads, and for including the valuable, and so often missing, information on the weight of thread to be used in the bobbin. This is a useful addition to everything about thread I’ve been told in the past.

Really appreciated this article and hadn’t thought about using the thicker weight on the spool while staying lighter in the bobbin. Question – I’m wondering which wool you might suggest for darning – specifically for wool socks? I have a couple of pair I’d like to mend.

I love Aurifil thread! I’ve used mostly the 50wt, but would like to try the heavier threads for hand stitching. I do love hand work, and so I was intrigues by Karen’s suggestion if hand work to embellish a quilt. I need to gone that a try.

As a shop owner I am always in need of tools to help my customers understand the difference in the thread weights so they can make a more educated choice, do you have a simplified chart that I could put on display by my beautiful Aurifil thread display racks? I did not know Aurifil made 6 strand embroidery floss. I am also interested in the wool Aurifil. I crossstitch and quilt. And I am glad to have a needle recommendation for those threads.

I didn’t know about the 40/3 Aurifil thread and would like to try it. I also learned the best needle to use when doing hand work with the 12 wt. Aurifil thread. I am currently big stitch hand quilting with the 12 wt.

Great, very specific info. Couple of questions. Has monofilament changed over the years? I have always avoided it due to people sharing that it was hard to fasten off (tie a knot, melt it, use the machine knot?). Also, love the idea of using the 12wt wool for decorative stitching. Is it washable? Most of my stuff that I would be interested in using it on are garments. Would the thread shrink up? Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I love your thread, but didn’t know the full extent of the various fibers and sizes; thank you for the marvelous graphics of the great selection! I have loved stitching since a child, and currently in addition to quilting and making garments for the neonatal unit I work with 3D/Brazilian Embroidery which gives wonderful embroidery results; I think I should try your wools in these works, as they will add beautiful color and fantastic texture. Can’t wait!

I love using Aurifil for quilt top piecing. With this thread the seams are so wonderfully flat!

I appreciate the tips regarding using monofilament thread. Particularly increasing stitch length and adjusting the tension. I use monofilament thread regularly when I don’t want stitches to show, and with some fabrics and thicknesses there has been some issues. But I can see with your tips my issues will probably be eliminated. Thanks a lot!!

I loved learning about the different weights of thread. Showing each weight with the same stitch really shows off what a difference thread weight does.

Lots of great information, but what I would really like to know is a local (to me in eastern Kansas) shop that actually carries a variety of Aurifil thread both color wise and weight wise.

I need to know if a spool that size generally can quilt one 60×90 quilt top?
Please comment on using the divisible Aurifloss divided. Would you recommend using 2 or 3 strands for finer stitches — and if so, what needles?

I really enjoyed reading this. I didn’t know much about what to do with monofilament and also appreciated learning more about what threads to use in the bobbin.
Thread is my new dimension….just a little bump up from the spools from the local 5 and Dime I grew up using!
I would like to know more about achieving a proper balance when using fine threads in the needle and more economical 50 weight in the bobbin. I often end up with a very nice stitch on top, and a “line” of stitches on the bobbin side. Normally this look would prompt me to tighten my upper tension, but that seems to make no difference .
I love getting your emails, all of them, I always learn something or become wonderfully inspired. This time I particularly loved the 12wt mention for free motion quilting, I had a real ah-ha moment! I am a novice, and I am practicing this artform, but the idea of using 12wt just appealed to me immediately. So I will try that this week!

Yes, the info in this Thread Matters is great! I didn’t realize Aurifil had a monofilament thread. I like to use it for quilting and for applique, so I need to try the Aurifil. Also, I never thought to use a Microtex needle for monofilament thread…another tip that can help me improve my stitching! Thank you

I created a file on my computer just for sewing tips which mostly contain tips from Aurifil. I will now use cotton thread in my bobbin when using the monofiliment thread and check the tentions. Thank you!

I always learn something new about Aurifil threads in auribuzz. Today, it was the use of 12wt wool for machine sewing. Previously, I thought it was strictly for hand stitching. Now I’m excited to experiment with it on a quilt with my long arm. Thank you so much for these informative articles.
