Greetings Aurifil followers. I’m Karen L. Miller ~ Redbird Quilt Co., Master Educator and Program Coordinator for Aurifilosophy, here to celebrate 2023, the 5th year of Thread Matters – The Aurifilosopher Series with monthly contributions by our wildly talented and creative Aurifilosophers from across the globe!

If your shop, group or guild is ready to take their understanding of thread weights, ply, needles, tension, and technique to the next level, there’s no better time to book an in-person or virtual Aurifilosophy event with one of our certified educators. Learn more and find your favorite Aurifilosopher here.

If you missed January’s installment of Thread Matters, use the link below to review tips, tricks and my favorite uses for the five unique Aurifil 2ply threads!

We had fantastic feedback on the post and are using your input to prepare even more reference materials for future release. Stay tuned for that!!

I’m excited to continue with our second Thread Matters installment for 2023. We’d intended to have this up last week, but much of our staff was in Atlanta for QuiltCon, so we’re excited to now have 2 posts to share for March… one today and one on the last Friday of the month! For now, I’ll begin by sharing my favorite uses for the Aurifil’s non 2ply threads including the six strand divisible cotton floss, a luscious 3ply cotton thread, a nylon monofilament, and a 12wt wool blend thread. There will be a giveaway this month too! Many thanks to those that contributed to last month’s review. You’ll find the Giveaway details at the end of this post.

IN REVIEW:
Aurifil offers their 100% Egyptian cotton 2ply thread in 5 weights.

L to R: 12wt, 28wt, 40wt, 50wt, 80wt

Additionally, they offer a six strand divisible cotton floss, a luscious 3 ply cotton thread, a nylon monofilament, and a wool blend thread.  Each thread is easily identified by the color of the spool. Learn more about Aurifil’s spool color coding and available cotton colors in our “Getting Started with Aurifil” post linked below.

Although each thread offering has a primary purpose and multiple secondary uses, every creator, maker, and thread lover has their own favorite uses for each. I’m excited to share my favorite uses paired with lessons I’ve learned to achieve excellent results with these threads!

Aurifloss

This six strand divisible Egyptian cotton floss delivered on a small wooden spool is PERFECT for cross stitching…

But my 1st choice for Aurifloss is Hand Decorative Stitches. If you love to add a bit of hand stitched fun to your “quilty” projects, consider using a few strands of Aurifloss to achieve beautiful slow-stitched details.

Tips:

  • When using Aurifloss on fabric, I prefer a Bohin Size 5 Crewel/Embroidery needle. The pointed tip of this needle allows you to stitch through fabric with ease and the larger eye aids in threading.
  • The same needle works wonderfully with Aurifil 12wt and 28wt threads!
  • Use short lengths of thread (about the length of your forearm) to avoid excessive wear and tear or knotting when stitching.

Aurifil FORTY3 (40wt / 3ply)

Aurifil Forty3 is one strand heavier than Aurifil’s original 40wt/2ply thread. That additional strand of 40wt provides extra strength that lends itself nicely to garment sewing, topstitching, and more!

My 1st choice for Aurifil 40wt/3ply thread is Longarm quilting – free motion or edge to edge. That’s right! This 3ply thread was designed to handle the high speeds of today’s longarm quilting machines and it executes true to design. Having used it on several brands of longarm and sit-down machines, I can attest to the excellent performance of this 3ply egyptian cotton thread.

Tips:

  • On the longarm consider using a Groz Beckert “MR” Multi Range Needle sizes ranging from 3.0 – 4.0    Comparable American and European sizes are 90/14 – 110/18.
  • Although Aurifil Forty3 will perform wonderfully in the bobbin, there’s a benefit to using a 2ply thread in that you can fit more thread on the bobbin. For larger quilts that will endure years of use, I prefer to use Aurifil 40/2 in the bobbin.

Aurifil Monofilament

Aurifil Monofilament is a single strand of synthetic fiber made of Nylon. If Aurifil monofilament had a weight assigned it would fall between 90wt and 100wt, very fine. But because it’s synthetic, it’s very strong and because it’s nylon, it will stretch. I adore using Aurifil Monofilament (clear or smoke) for free motion quilting those fabrics that are hard to match to any one color of cotton thread.

But, my 1st choice for Aurifil Nylon Monofilament is Invisible machine appliqué. Whether you choose clear or smoke, this fine weight, strong nylon thread will work wonderfully to invisibly secure appliqué to a background.  I generally combine the appliqué stitching process with the quilting step, eliminating the need to stitch the appliqué twice.

Tips:

  • Use a Microtex Sharp needle size 70/10 or 80/12 for domestic machine work with Aurifil Monofilament. Use Aurifil 50wt cotton thread in the bobbin.
  • On the longarm, use a similar size needle or a Groz Beckert “MR” in size 2.0 or 2.5. Use Aurifil 40wt or 50wt cotton thread in the bobbin.
  • To avoid stretching the thread, be sure to decrease the top tension. We also recommend increasing stitch length when working with Monofilament.

Aurifil 12wt Wool

Aurifil 12wt Wool thread is 50% wool and 50% acrylic making it oh so strong! Whether you prefer machine or hand stitching, this primitive looking thread will beautifully adorn any project. Although I’ve enjoyed using Aurifil 12wt Wool for free motion quilting on a domestic machine…

I’m always over the top impressed with Aurifil Designer and Aurifilospher Jo Avery’s use of 12wt wool for Hand Embroidery.

Tips:

  • When machine quilting with Aurifil 12wt wool, select a Topstitch needle size 90/14 or larger and continue to use Aurifil 50wt in the bobbin.  The 50wt is the most cost effective weight to purchase. Your bank account will thank you.
  • For hand work with Aurifil 12wt wool, I prefer to use a Bohin Crewel/Embroidery needle in size 5 or a comparable large eye straw needle.

This wraps up a few of my favorite uses for Aurifil’s non-2ply threads. Thank you so much for providing any feedback you might have below.

      2. Your information is always helpful and I learn something new every tim

  2. Great mini tutorial! I know Aurifil offers an excellent cotton thread, but did not know about the 12wt wool thread and would love to try it. Also didn’t know that Aurifil made monofilament. Will definitely look for that. I use the 2-ply 40wt for machine quilting. the Forty-3 looks interesting. Thanks for the info!

    1. Your explanation on monofilament explains a lot of issues I had when I first tried using it. I’m trying this again!

  3. So much great information. The tips are a real plus on what works well in the bobbin and the needle info. Also didn’t know about the Aurifil Monofiliment – will be giving that a try!

  4. I am just starting to think about hand quilting with big stitch. How do you start this? Do you double the thread or use a heavier weight and if so what needles are best for this? Thanks for this series about thread. It is so helpful.

  5. The overview of different weights of thread is excellent. I have used the 12w floss, didn’t know wool was also available. Also, didn’t know about the combination of top thread with bobbin thread options. Thank you!

  6. I just finished a table runner which is black and very light beige and I was going to use a twin needle with a beige and a black thread. I had forgotten about monofilament thread, but after reading your article, I think I will use that instead. Thanks,

  7. I am a beginner and I didn’t know that I can quilt on my domestic machine with title 12. I have to try it!!

  8. I didn’t realize there was a wool/acrylic blend available. I’d love to try that for wool appliqué!

  9. I didn’t realize all the different kinds of thread – I tried a invisible thread on my machine with a mess. Thank you for all the information

    1. I am anxious to try the monofilament thread. I did not know that Aurifil made this. I have experience with several brands over the years and will be happy to experiment with a new brand. Great info on using the monofilament. Thank you!salakom@icloud.com

  10. Thanks for a great explanation of Aurifil threads. Especially the use of Aurifil 12wt Wool thread for free motion quilting. Something I will have to try.

  11. I bought a spool of the 12wt thread and am very excited to use it. Auriful is my go to thread for quilting. The above post was very informative and has given me some great ideas.

  12. I didn’t realize your wide selection of thread types. Interested in learning about the cross stitch threads. Do you have a conversion chart from dmc numbers so we can order similar colors?

  13. I’m excited to discover I can use 12wt wool to quilt on my domestic machine!

  14. I love the explanations for using the various weights on my sewing machine and being able to use the 50wt in the bobbin. I was taught they had to match in order to work, but you are giving me permission to broaden my knowledge. Thank you!

  15. I love Aurifil thread (and so does my Baby Lock)! I use 50 wt for piecing, 40 wt for quilting, and 80 wt for hand appliqué. Maybe it already exists, but I would love a chart with guidance on what type needle to use with each type thread, for the different purposes. Thank you!

  16. Can I use the Aurifil designed to use on a domestic machine with my longarm? Anything I need to be aware of to use it for quilting?

    1. Hi Denise — absolutely!! We have many longarm quilters that use the 2ply Aurifil threads on their longarm. Of course, the FORTY3 (40wt/3ply) thread was designed for longarm speeds and is conveniently delivered on a cone, but the 2ply threads are beautiful as well. For larger quilts I would suggest you use the 40/2, 40/3 or 28/2 with Aurifil 40/2 in the bobbin. Personally, I use a Groz Beckert “MR” needle and it works perfectly to allow you to quilt in any direction without shredding or breaking. Give it a go! Remember though, although Aurifil 100% cotton is “virtually lint free”, working with cotton threads will require you to clean your bobbin area a bit more often than when working with Poly. Have fun though and reach out anytime with questions.

  17. I would like to see more about the wool thread as I have had problems using it before.

  18. I have always needed tips on using monofilament thread. I had no idea you could quilt with the wool thread.

  19. I didn’t realize there was an Aurifil 40/3 ply and that it works great on a long arm. Thanks for the excellent overview on the different types of thread that Aurifil makes.

  20. I heard about Aurifloss, but haven’t used it yet. When you do all that handwork, you may as well use a thread that really shows up. I appreciate the needle suggestions for this and all the threads.

  21. I really like the information on what needle to use with the different weighs of thread. Also that you recommend using fifty weight in the bobbin.

  22. I am a hand embroiderer and historic reproduction seamstress, so I was interested to learn about Aurifloss and 12wt wool in particular. My sister is a manic (avid is too mild) quilter, so I will be forwarding this to her as she started working with longarm machines at her job recently. I would love to win the giveaway for hand-stitching on the Regency stays that are (one of) my current WIPs.

  23. I didn’t realize that Aurifil makes a monofilament thread that is good for quilting – I must try it!

  24. Interested in trying Aurifil monofilament. Good tips on needle and bobbin thread

  25. I would like to know more about needles and good weight for hand applique. I love Aurifill cotton thread. It is the only cotton thread I use.

  26. Thank you for the tips on using monofilament thread. I’ve always been intimidated by it and I’m going to try 50 wt in the bobbin right away!

  27. Wow! As a new owner of an embroidery machine, I had not idea there were so many options. I’ll be coming to your website over and over to determine which thread is best for my project. Thanks!

  28. Does Aurfil have wash away for the bobbin? What weight is it? What is important to know before using it?

  29. So much information in this article about what thread and needle combo work the best. It is also a benefit to know what other types of trheads and weights will work in the bobbin. I have used only Aurifil for hand applique and machine piecing. It gives wonderful results. I think it is time to experiment with a few options now. Thank you!

  30. I do a lot of wool hand embroidery. Will the 12W Aurifil give me the same results as a Sue Spargo wool embroidery thread ?

  31. Thanks for a great description of your threads. I love Aurifil but my favorite for appliqué is 80wt. It just disappears into the fabric making the appliqué stitch nearly invisible.

  32. I didn’t know that Aurifil Han a monofilament thread. Lots of great info here.

    1. Amazing company! I can’t wait to use the monofilament and wool thread. I love looking at all the beautiful colors. This article is to be saved and used as a reference. Thank you for the beautification of my quilts, & the start of using my embroidery machine.

  33. I am grateful to see all the different weights and blends of Aurifil. I would like to learn more about using each. Small projects each month featuring a particular weight would be a great way to help instill the uses and advance skills.

  34. I’ve tried monofilament threads in the past with little success. Would love to learn more!

  35. I have learned about specialty threads that I was previously unaware of. I also did not know that Aurifil made a monofilament. All good to know for future projects as I use Aurifil thread exclusively.

  36. Because of your excellent explanation, I am going to try 3 ply 50 weight thread for my current quilting project. I’ll quilt it on my Janome 6500 Professional sewing machine. I’m excited to see how it comes out.

  37. Love the information about the different weights and what they are best for. I use 50wt for my piecing and also if I do the quilting (basically free motion or stitch in the ditch) on my domestic machine. I always make sure that I have the same weight in my bobbin as well as the needle.

  38. I have slowly began to use more specialized thread for finishing my small projects. Will keep this email to find the different threads. Thanks.

    1. I appreciate all the info about Aurifil thread. I use this thread for all of my applique pieces that I do.

  39. I’m planning to make an arty vest, and would like to experiment quilting it with my new, nearly tol sewing machine & using heavier wt threads, possibly in my embroidery module. Have much to learn about this machine, but I love using Aurifil 80 for hand appliqué.

  40. I love your articles about thread, I learn something new every time I read them. I’m a new quilter and mostly use 50wt thread, but I’m goin to have to try the heavier wt. threads!

  41. I really appreciated the information about 3ply thread. I learned something new. Thanks.

  42. Would love to try Aurifil monofilament on an applique project. The blog was full of interesting facts about the different threads.

  43. Thank you for telling me about bohin size 5 crewel to use with the 12 wt threads. I will definitely try this needle out.

  44. It was good to learn I must use a size 14 embroidery needle when topstitching with 12 wt. on my machine.

  45. I am a longarmer & didn’t realize you could use Auril thread on the machine. I will be interested in trying it!

  46. I love Aurifil 50 and 40 weight threads. I’m looking forward to playing with 12 and 28 wt. threads!

  47. Such valuable information but most importantly I never knew you had a 12wt wool. AURIFILOSOPHY BY AURIFIL is a must!

  48. I liked learning about using a thinner weight thread in the bobbin plus being able to load more thread in the bobbin. I also liked the fact that the aurifil thread #12 was also paired with the bohn #5 needle which was quite helpful.

  49. I just started learning to longarm, with lots of questions about bobbin threads…so it was nice to know about using regular 2 ply 40, in the bobbin with Forty3.

  50. The information about the different thread sizes helps a lot. I would love to try the thread for cross stitching and the filament thread. Very helpful!! Thank you!

  51. I have always admired Karen Millers quilting. Also Wendy Sheppard, I bought a DVD by her from Annie’s years ago and really liked her style of teaching. I’m impressed by the wool machine quilting, looks like fun! Wish I was a better quilter.

  52. I find it so helpful when the needle type and size is recommended. I find choosing a needle for handwork sometimes challenging

  53. It is so helpful to read about which needle(s) are best for the different weights of thread.

  54. Enjoyed reading about the different needle sizes and the various threads with their various weights. I was gifted a new sewing machine for my quilting and embroidery projects. I’m looking for a new thread supply. Thanks so much for the info.

  55. I was interested in hearing about using Aurifil 12wt Wool thread for machine quilting. It’s a new concept for me and I will be giving it a whirl.

  56. The tips are great. The needle sizes for hand embroidery are especially helpful! Thanks for the information.

  57. I’ve only used the 50 wt thread. My next order will be 40 wt. I’m a newbie and can’t wait to learn more.

  58. Loved the wool thread, didn’t know I could use for longarm. Thank you so much for the information

  59. I would like to know more about the auril 12wt. 3 ply. Can it be used in a domestic embroidery machine? I’d love to see it in a video and what wt. bobin thread would you use?

  60. I would purchase reference card sets with these thread details – use, needle size, and bobbin info

  61. You’ve provided lots of great information about the various thread weights. Now I need to win so I can try them out. I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions then. ;o)

  62. I love Aurifil thread. Today I learned about Aurifloss, which I never knew existed until now. I would love to try using it. I do love hand stitching, so this would be a great time to try Aurifloss.

  63. Wool is my favorite fiber to spin and to knit. Can’t wait to try the 12et wool for embroidery! I didn’t even know it exhisted!

  64. I did not know that Aurifil made a monofilament thread and especially like the samples showing it and the tips for using it, like the tension adjustment. Also liked seeing the samples of other weights of thread in free motion quilting. More like that would be helpful. Thank you.

  65. I learned that you need to use specific needle sizes with specific thread weights…who knew? Thanks for all the thread tips!

  66. Like the idea of doing appliqué and quilting with one action – sew once to achieve two things

  67. This was an excellent article! Karen was clear on needle to thread relationships which was terrific as I am never sure but I would like it if you were able to show more on 12 wt for slow stitching perhaps with some stitch examples? I am just learning to slow stitch and using 12wt so would love to learn stitches beyond basic back stitch, cross stitch etc
    Thank you

  68. What a useful article! I have discovered two new threads – Forty3 and monofilament and am looking forward to trying them out 😊

  69. Really enjoyed learning all this information and excited to branch out and try some new threads, I always use the 50w cotton for quilting but now I want to explore these other threads!

  70. As someone who hand stitches a lot, especially with wool or in old English ‘crewel’, I was delighted to discover that Aurifil produces not only a 12 wt wool thread but that it is mixed with a man made thread to add strength and consistency of thickness 😊 and thank you for this brilliant tip,
‘ Stitch with the nap of the thread by knotting the last end cut and threading the needle with the opposite end.’

  71. Can you use an iron with the Aurifil Nylon Monofilament thread? I enjoy seeing the different projects people are making with the Aurifil threads. I learned about the needle type to use with the thread. Thank you.

  72. Lots of good info. I’ll have to reread it! Can I iron over the monofilament? I’ve never seen some of these threads. Are they only through order or do some shops carry them?

  73. Thank you for drawing my attention to both the 28wt wool and the monofilament threads, and for including the valuable, and so often missing, information on the weight of thread to be used in the bobbin. This is a useful addition to everything about thread I’ve been told in the past.

  74. I especially like the picture showing the different weights of thread in the same stitch pattern. Also, I didn’t realize how versatile the nylon thread could be. Thank you!

  75. Really interesting read, especially with recommendations of which needle sizes. I did not know of the 12wt wool also that it can be used for machine quilting! More information on using the monfilament thread would be appreciated also what spool sizes each weight can be purchased in.
Thank you for such an informative article😀

  76. I prefer Aurifil thread for all my sewing and have only used 50 wt. Would enjoy trying all the others.

  77. I especially liked the color coding information of the spools. I personally love Aurifil 50 wt for free motion, but, with this new information, I would like to try the 3 ply on my next quilting project.

  78. Loved the discussion about Aurafil Monofilament. I have a spool in my stash and now it will get used!

  79. I have used Aurifil for years but I had never heard of forty3. I will have to give that a try. Likewise, I always thought 12 wt was to use in the bobbin only. I would rather use it as the top thread so I’ll try that as well. Thanks for all the information!

  80. Learned a lot from this article, including that there is an Aurifil monofilament. I will look into that and give it a try on my next appliqué project. Thank you for all things Aurifil!

  81. I am very interested in trying the Forty3 thread in my Longarm, and will keep in mind your tip about using 40/2 in the bobbin.

  82. Thanks so much for the info on what needle sizes to use with each type of thread–so helpful!

  83. I am pretty new to learning about thread. Years ago I just bought what I could afford. I always learn and am inspired about your threads when I read your newsletters. Please don’t stop sending them. Today’s ahh ha moment is the monofilament thread! Wow. Oh who am I kidding? I really learned a lot on the whole article. P.S. I now am collecting Aurafil thread🤦‍♀️

  84. Really appreciated this article and hadn’t thought about using the thicker weight on the spool while staying lighter in the bobbin. Question – I’m wondering which wool you might suggest for darning – specifically for wool socks? I have a couple of pair I’d like to mend.

  85. I was interested in the section about monofilament. I didn’t know aurifil had this product.

  86. I love Aurifil thread! I’ve used mostly the 50wt, but would like to try the heavier threads for hand stitching. I do love hand work, and so I was intrigues by Karen’s suggestion if hand work to embellish a quilt. I need to gone that a try.

  87. I learned how beautifully the 12 weight Aurifil Wool thread machine quilts 💜…and in my favorite color purple!

  88. I am very anxious to try the Aurifil floss for my cross stitch projects. I use Aurifil 50 ct for all my sewing for my Janome and Bernita sewing machines.

  89. I’m just getting started with quilting and embroidery. I tried the Aurifil thread and noticed the difference. I would like to try the monofilament on quilting projects. Thank you!

  90. Great information. I now want to try using Aurifloss on my next hand embroidery project.

  91. I would love to have a chart matching the type and size needle for each type and weight of thread.
Love to read all this info and save , but then cn’t find info when i need it. lol

  92. As a shop owner I am always in need of tools to help my customers understand the difference in the thread weights so they can make a more educated choice, do you have a simplified chart that I could put on display by my beautiful Aurifil thread display racks? If not, I will be printing this discussion to share. It was very informative and I as well did not realize Aurifil had a wool blend!

  93. I would like to know more about using monofilament thread for quilting and machine applique.

  94. Hello and thank you for such an informative article. I am interested in learning more about the 12 weight wool/ poly thread for machine stitching an appliqué wool wall hanging. Also the 40 weight/3 sounds incredible. I’d like to learn about using this for free motion quilting and maybe highlighting some pictures of using the regular 40 and the 40/3. Thank you for your wonderful products 🥰

  95. I really liked how you explained the uses for the different weights of thread and the needles that are used with each. Thank you!

  96. I appreciate the needle recommendations for the various thread weights especially the bobbin weight to compliment machine sewing.

  97. Thank you for a very educational article, I learned a lot! My last experience with a monofilament thread wasn’t very good, I’m excited to give Aurifil a try. I’d also like to learn more about machine appliqué.

  98. I like the information on which needles to use. Also, the video showing threading the 12 wt

  99. Thanks for all the tips- I sometimes have trouble deciding which thread or needle would be best.

  100. I really appreciated the video on threading an embroidery needle! Also, the information on pairing needle size with thread weight. That’s especially helpful!!

  101. Any information on using Aurifl thread for machine embroidery would be very helpful to me. Thank you for the opportunity to enter the giveaway.

  102. Excellent article with lots of good information. I have used other brands of monofilament thread with not-so-good results. I appreciate the tips on using monofilament thread, and will definitely have to try Aurifil!

  103. I did not realize how many variations of Aurofil are available! I will try to bookmark this article for use in the future. I would love to try the wool.

  104. Great information! I am encouraged to try the weights I have purchased but haven’t tried yet as well as get some monofilament and use it as well.

  105. I am relatively new to quilting after sewing for many years. Usually use embroidery floss that I can separate for desired look but will definitely give other Aurifil weights a try! Thank you!

  106. I want to use mono thread to quilt a wall hanging. The information was very helpful. I will make a small sample and practice.

  107. I did not know Aurifil made 6 strand embroidery floss. I am also interested in the wool Aurifil. I crossstitch and quilt. And I am glad to have a needle recommendation for those threads.

  108. Would like to see a super magnification of the various weights to see their surface treatment.

  109. Such great information – and love the pictures accompanying the text – it all answers many questions I have had about thread usage… Thank you !

  110. I didn’t know about the 40/3 Aurifil thread and would like to try it. I also learned the best needle to use when doing hand work with the 12 wt. Aurifil thread. I am currently big stitch hand quilting with the 12 wt.

  111. I like the information about the monofilament thread and the “40 3” thread. I haven’t tried but would love too.

  112. I liked the display of the different weights stitched next to each other. Also would like to know what a good stitch for sewing appliqué with the monofilament thread.

  113. I’ve been signed up to receive the Aurifil thread email for some time now, but recently I’ve actually started reading it and I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of the helpful hints, tricks and how to use each type of thread successfully! I’ve mainly used thread for piecing quilts but am excited to try for hand stitching too. Thank you for the chance to win!

  114. This post was so inspirational! I had no idea you made a wool thread! And the Aurafloss – gorgeous! I learned I am not going to take thread for granted any more – I can make better choices next time I purchase thread.

  115. Thank you. This was very informative and I will use the info to my advantage. So many things to learn about.

  116. Great, very specific info. Couple of questions. Has monofilament changed over the years? I have always avoided it due to people sharing that it was hard to fasten off (tie a knot, melt it, use the machine knot?). Also, love the idea of using the 12wt wool for decorative stitching. Is it washable? Most of my stuff that I would be interested in using it on are garments. Would the thread shrink up? Anyway, thanks for sharing!

  117. I like having guide lines for the correct size needles & weights of thread for various projects, such as quilting & hand applique

  118. Really enjoyed reading about the different weights of thread and seeing the photos of how they stitch out. Thank you. I am particularly interested in your 40 weight for long arming. I have just started working with a Bernina Q16…so am eager to learn about threads

  119. I love your thread, but didn’t know the full extent of the various fibers and sizes; thank you for the marvelous graphics of the great selection! I have loved stitching since a child, and currently in addition to quilting and making garments for the neonatal unit I work with 3D/Brazilian Embroidery which gives wonderful embroidery results; I think I should try your wools in these works, as they will add beautiful color and fantastic texture. Can’t wait!

  120. Wool thread? Who knew? I thought all thread was either cotton or cotton/poly! And I love the embroidery drawing with thread! I’m really behind the times in sewing information.

  121. I love the information about the monofilament thread. I tried using it many years ago but wasn’t happy with it… maybe because it wasn’t Aurofil!

  128. I appreciate the tips regarding using monofilament thread. Particularly increasing stitch length and adjusting the tension. I use monofilament thread regularly when I don’t want stitches to show, and with some fabrics and thicknesses there has been some issues. But I can see with your tips my issues will probably be eliminated. Thanks a lot!!

  129. I didn’t know that Aurifil had a monofilament. So that will be a new thing to try, and I have all of those lovely tips when I do!!

  132. Karen, your instruction on the different weights and purpose of Auriful threads is the absolute best information I have ever found. Please keep us the great work you do.

  133. I had no idea that Aurifil also made wool thread! I love all the threads and can’t wait to try the wool also!

  134. I loved learning about the different weights of thread. Showing each weight with the same stitch really shows off what a difference thread weight does.

  135. I truly enjoy these emails, I learn so much and enjoy seeing the art created with these wonderful threads!! I seem to be very drawn to embroidery lately and the 12 w wool thread just might be my next purchase!

  138. I’d like to learn about paper piecing – either English or Foundation- using Aurifil threads and correct weights /needles. I’d actually like any info about thread weight and needle sizes-there are so many choices and knowing the correct needle for thread has stumped me. Is there a basic guideline Aurifil has?
    Thanks

  139. I so appreciate the visuals with the descriptive use of each thread. I will definitely be using Aurifil Nylon Monofilament fo Invisible machine appliqué. What a great idea! And then to combine the appliqué stitching process with the quilting step, eliminating the need to stitch the appliqué twice?!? Genius! Thank you for the tips.

  140. Lots of great information, but what I would really like to know is a local (to me in eastern Kansas) shop that actually carries a variety of Aurifil thread both color wise and weight wise.

  141. I appreciate the information about using Aurifil 40wt/3ply for machine quilting. Didn’t know it was designed to be used with the high speed machines. The tips for which needle to use are also very helpful. Thanks!

  142. I had a mess the last time I used monofilament thread. I also need to know which needles to use with which needle to use with which threads.

  146. These informative posts are great! They remind and educate me on how to utilize Aurifil threads in creating my projects. Please keep them coming. I often read the posts on my phone and would like to ask that you use a text that is a little heavier/darker to make it easier to read. Thanks. Loving Aurifil!

  147. I really enjoyed reading this. I didn’t know much about what to do with monofilament and also appreciated learning more about what threads to use in the bobbin.

  148. Thread is my new dimension….just a little bump up from the spools from the local 5 and Dime I grew up using!
I would like to know more about achieving a proper balance when using fine threads in the needle and more economical 50 weight in the bobbin. I often end up with a very nice stitch on top, and a “line” of stitches on the bobbin side. Normally this look would prompt me to tighten my upper tension, but that seems to make no difference .

  149. I love getting your emails, all of them, I always learn something or become wonderfully inspired. This time I particularly loved the 12wt mention for free motion quilting, I had a real ah-ha moment! I am a novice, and I am practicing this artform, but the idea of using 12wt just appealed to me immediately. So I will try that this week!
