As summer fades and the back-to-school season begins, we challenged our Artisans to embrace this new chapter of creativity and learning. In the spirit of teaching, we asked them to share their expertise, showcasing their love for and use of Aurifil Threads.
Whether demonstrating an embroidery stitch, showcasing how to use a heavier weight thread in their machine, or offering a step-by-step guide for a special project, our artisans have once again risen to the challenge. These projects not only highlight the versatility of our threads but also serve as a source of inspiration for expanding our skills and trying something new.
A massive thank you to all our September participants! Your passion for sharing knowledge and creativity continues to enrich our community. Let’s dive into this month’s projects and learn something new together!

I’m excited to share my project for the September Aurifil Artisan Challenge. I transformed the mini size of my Always Together Quilt pattern into a quilted zipper pillow, showcasing machine quilting with Aurifil 12 wt thread. This thicker thread creates bold texture and dimension that pops visually! If you’re curious about quilting with heavier threads, check out the linked blog tutorial for all my favorite tips and tricks to make quilting with 12 wt in your machine a breeze!

Did you know you can use two threads at once?!?! Here I used two Aurifil threads (a red and a blue) on my longarm and the result is a cool twist!

I’ve always wanted to share something that gives an insight into my work and creating a gradient in threads and blending almost always is part of that! ‘Less is more’ does definitely not apply here, rather ‘the more the merrier’. To reach a satisfactory level of colour progression when machine embroidering, a minimum of 5 shades is advisable. It just makes the blending so much smoother.

An additional exploration of the many different weight threads to choose form with Aurifil. The 8wt is a welcome addition to the range. Who doesn’t love a thick thread, or even thicker! The variety is fun to work with.

This month’s Aurifil challenge is all about sharing what we love, and for me, that’s hand quilting. I’m excited to work with the new 8wt thread and share my simple 5-step guide: Stand, Sway, Peak, Push, Persist. It’s a mindful, rhythmic process that makes each stitch a joy. If you’re new to hand quilting, give it a try and enjoy the calm it brings!

I love my ring pincushion. Its perfect for on the go hand projects. Its super handy when I am doing my needle turn applique using small applique pins – you can keep your hands on your project! I hope you enjoy the tutorial, its a quick and easy hand project.

Using new products from Aurifil is always a treat, and trying out a few of the new 8 wt. colors from the Indelible Collection by Anna Maria Textiles was no exception. I used 4 different colors to add a machine-quilted touch to this Holland Pouch AND used it for the top stitching along the zippers and handles! While it does take a few little tweaks to use this thicker thread through your machine, see my latest blog post for all the tips and tricks to successfully get this fun and chunky stitching on your next project!

Let me show you a quick and easy way to change the thread on your sewing machine! This works for sergers too.

I learned a useful method for needle-turned appliqué that was more intuitive to me than the other methods I’d seen. Aurifil 80wt made it look very nice, with stitches sinking right into the fabric and blending in. I made a short reel showing the method in hopes that it helps anyone else who is wanting to learn to appliqué or is interested in a new method!

I love a good secondhand find, and its even better when you can add your own personality to it! I took a loose interpretation of floral embroidery, and kept sewing until I had filled the spaces I wanted covered. Its perfect to hide the odd mark or too aswell! Finished with some knotted zip pulls, inpired by friendship bracelets.

This month I wanted to show you my favorite way to use Aurifil 80wt thread- to hand stitch binding. What I love about 80wt for binding is how thin but incredible strong the thread is, making binding stitches nearly invisible. Hand sewing binding is one of my favorite steps and learning to lean into the process with the right thread and tools makes a difference in the last finishing step. I hope you can borrow a helpful tip or two and give hand stitching a try too!
