When working with raw edge applique, the edge finishing technique applied can bring your designs to life. In this post, we’ll explore:
- How different weights of Aurifil can transform the look of your applique.
- How various finishing techniques enable beautiful, professional finishes.
With the tips and tricks shared, you’ll gain the confidence to apply these techniques and make your applique projects truly stand out.

The thread weight you choose can have a dramatic effect on your finished piece. For this example, I stitched circles using five different Aurifil weights—80wt, 50wt, 40wt, 28wt, and 12wt—to show how each weight creates a distinct look. As you might imagine, the delicate 80wt produces a subtle effect, while the bold 12wt makes a striking statement.
To achieve the best results, it’s essential to pair the correct bobbin thread and needle size with the top thread weight:
- 80wt, 50wt, and 40wt Threads: Use 50wt in the bobbin and a size 75/11 embroidery needle.
- 28wt Thread: Use 50wt thread in the bobbin and a 90/14 topstitch needle.
- 12wt Thread: Use 40wt thread in the bobbin and a 100/16 topstitch needle.
These needle and bobbin thread combinations will work for all the decorative stitching techniques discussed below.

Setting Up for Edge Stitching
Before diving into your project, follow these quick guidelines for edge stitching success:
- Set Up Your Machine
Install the appropriate needle and thread for your chosen weight. Refer to the guidelines above for optimal results. - Create a Practice Piece
Always test your stitching on a practice piece before starting on the main project. This gives you the chance to adjust thread choices, stitch length, and tension, ensuring everything looks perfect. For best results, use scraps of the same fabrics chosen for your project.

Tip: For stitching that stands out, use heavier threads and contrasting colors. For a subtle look, choose finer threads and match them to your fabric. Aurifil’s extensive color range makes matching a breeze.

- Use an Open-Toe Foot
An open-toe foot allows you to clearly see the edge of your fabric and your stitching. Most open-toe feet have a center line; align it with the fabric edge, and ensure your needle is centered. This technique will help you achieve clean, precise stitching.

Techniques for Finishing Raw Edges
Once you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time to experiment with different ways to finish your raw edges. Here are a few techniques to try:
- Straight Stitch
Stitch 1/8” inside the edge of your applique. This simple method secures the fabric to the background but leaves the edge raw, which will fray over time for a textured look. For a bold effect, use 12wt thread with a lengthened stitch to mimic a hand-stitched “big stitch” look. - Blanket Stitch
A traditional blanket stitch adds a classic touch to your applique edges. Pair it with a big stitch for extra detail. - Couching
For a decorative edge, couch a thick cord along the fabric edge using Aurifil’s clear monofilament thread to secure it in place. This technique adds texture and dimension. - Decorative Machine Stitches
Most sewing machines offer built-in decorative stitches—why not use them for applique edges? Aurifil 28wt thread works beautifully for this. In my Belle Epoche quilt, I used a decorative stitch that mimicked jewelry prongs to enhance the Art Deco-inspired design. - Combine Techniques
Don’t be afraid to mix and match methods! For inspiration, check out the piece where I used straight stitching, blanket stitching, couching, and decorative stitches all in one design. The possibilities are endless when you let your creativity flow.
