This month’s challenge invited makers to step outside—literally or figuratively—and draw inspiration from the colors, textures, and beauty of nature. The result? A breathtaking variety of projects that celebrate sustainability, seasonality, and storytelling through stitch.
From thread scrap paper and cyanotype outlines, to raw-edge appliqué postcards, embroidered landscapes, and thread-painted views, our Artisans truly showcased the endless possibilities of working with thread as their medium. Some mended garments to extend their life, some stitched blooming florals in 3D felt, and others used quilting, embroidery, and foundation paper piecing to bring the essence of spring to life.
Across all techniques—from visible mending and thread sketching to travel art folios and bold quilted bags—one thing is clear: when nature becomes your muse, the possibilities are endless.
So, as we step into April and celebrate Earth Month, we invite you to soak in these beautiful creations. Let them inspire you to reuse, repair, reimagine, and reconnect with your craft and with the world around you.

Branching out from fabric this month was so fun. It was a great way to step back and experiment with something I don’t do every day. I was inspired by Earth Month coming in April and wanted to find a way to incorporate all of the little thread scraps from a quilt I made. I’ve been saving little thread scraps for a couple of months and when my nine-year old mentioned they’d be making paper in art soon, I knew that was the perfect project for them. Those thread scraps and handmade paper evolved into stitching on paper and using watercolors and dried flowers to make quilty themed art.

For the nature-inspired artisan challenge, I created a raw-edge appliqué fabric postcard. I was inspired by @thislittlestreet’s Paint the World Series and focused the postcard landscape around a floral house with a whimsical garden. I used my stash of Aurifil 50wt threads to machine stitch the appliqué pieces into the scene, and completed it with some 12wt embroidered grass.

This 18-inch x 18-inch art quilt titled “Galápagos Islands” is a topography of the magical islands (that are part of Ecuador, where I live). The Galápagos Islands are famous for their endemic species, with over 80% of land birds and 97% of reptiles and land mammals found nowhere else on Earth; however, the Galápagos Islands have one of the highest rates of extinction in the world.

This month Aurifil challenged artisans to infuse the essence of the outdoors into our craft. In my little corner of the globe the snow has almost melted, we are slowly getting a bit more sunlight, and I am wishing for the first buds of spring to make an appearance. I opened my Untamed 50wt thread collection and settled in behind my machine without a real “plan” other than to just let the illustration in the Hello Dahlia print from the Tula Pink “Untamed” fabric collection guide the path. I went to work indulging in different stitches, widths, and lengths decorating the blooms. The colors that most called to me were 7001, 2535, and 7002 to highlight the blooms. The texture from the thread as it worked with the soft and stable in this bag is just downright DREAMY. I really enjoy the juxtaposition of the geometric double quilting in 7001 against the Check Please fabric as it collides with exaggerated and delicate quilting in the blooms, leaves, and stems. Even if it snows again (let’s be honest – it will!) the essence of spring in these threads and fabrics is a total feast for the eyes!

As an Aurifil Artisan we were asked to create a piece that honors Earth Month (April) and I wanted to show the deeper connection between mother nature and human nature. Moss thrives where nothing else can, reclaiming what’s been lost. The heart pulses with instinctive life, a force that keeps going no matter what. In this piece, I merge the two – contrasting fragility with strength, decay with renewal. Stitched entirely in free motion, I built up layers of thread to create an organic, raw texture using five different tones of red 50wt thread. The 3D moss strands and blood vessels growing across the heart, symbolizing nature’s ability to endure and heal, are also created with thread and wire. The process itself felt like watching life take over—slow, intentional, growing with every stitch.

I was inspired by these Blackthorn flowers I saw on a recent dog walk and wanted to make some flowers with 5 petals. The curves were all hand pieced with 50wt, and then I used 28wt and 40wt threads to quilt in and around the flowers to add texture and define them on the backside!

I was inspired by the natural beauty of the Gower Peninsula to try my first attempt at thread painting a landscape. I used twelve different colours of thread in three different weights to try and capture the texture, shades, and drama of one of my favourite views.

I was inspired by the earth hues within the Dreamweaver chambray collection. I have brought the warm browns of sand and earth, the soft greys of pebbles, and the greens and blues of our rich oceans and skies together in this cathedral window cushion. I wanted to capture all the grounding effect of the earth tones within layers and quilting texture within this cathedral window project. I have machine quilted squares of fabric using 40wt before placing them within windows within windows. I have used 13 different shades of chambray quilted with two variegated shades that bring them all together.

Abstract flowers. For the March challenge, I worked with felt, which I haven`t done (seriously) before. As some parts are really tiny, I used glue to fix them before sewing. I tried out different ways of filling the space by topstitching with the machine and hand embroidery without a big plan and overthinking—just doing. I must admit I like that way of working a lot!

For March’s Aurifil Artisan Challenge, I let the colors and textures of spring guide my stitches. Using a mix of 8wt, 12wt wool, and floss, I brought this floral embroidery design to life—each thread color inspired by budding blooms, fresh greens, and golden sunlight 🌸🌿. I love how the texture of these threads adds dimension and makes each element feel like it’s growing right out of the fabric.

I know black is an unusual colour to feature nature but this beautiful fabric from @rubystarsociety called Floral lace from their First Light collection is a lovely shiny representation of delicate flowers. The laptop bag had to be extra thick so I used double quilt batting and used free motion quilting to create the puffy flower effect using the Forty3 weight. I love the way it looks and my friend is absolutely in love with the bag I made for her!

Spring has sprung, and while we’re about to get hit by a snowstorm soon (yay, Utah Spring!), the last week of weather has been fantastically beautiful and sunny, giving our tiny hyacinth the perfect opportunity to pop off. I usually revel in their scent when I walk outside, but with the snow coming and the fact that there are only 3 because I never planted these arrant stray bulbs, I decided to pick them to bring their loveliness indoors and commemorate their outlines via cyanotype!

For the ‘Earth Month’ challenge, I decided to mend a jumper that had some holes in it. I used the 8wt threads to darn the holes. I love using the 8wt threads for mending as they are delicate but strong, and the slight sheen on them is absolutely beautiful. I am pleased I extended the life of this jumper, and I can continue wearing it. If we mend our clothes instead of sending them to the landfill, we can have a huge positive impact on our Earth.

I love spring and the fresh life it brings. Baby ducks, birds, and little bees. My son and I love to be outside and be the witness to the change in season, enjoying the later days and slower pace to life in bloom. For nature inspired, I thought of my favorite things (tulips + mommy duck) and picked a pattern to bring joy into my life. Foundation paper piecing is one of my favorite methods and Aurifil thread makes the seams tight + sturdy. As always, 50wt to the rescue!

Spring has finally arrived, and I wanted to make something that captures the colours and freshness of the season. Using felt, I created a variety of flowers that I’m hoping to see in my own garden later this summer. The 12wt thread embellishments to each flower and leaf really help bring them to life.

The March Aurifil Artisan challenge was all about elements of nature. When I saw the blocks in the new Dragonfly Lake Quilt pattern by @suzyquilts, I knew they would be perfect for this project. I designed a travel art folio around the adorable butterfly and dragonfly blocks from the pattern, using my favorite 8wt threads to accentuate the insects. My daughter loves it and it’s perfect for taking her art projects on the go! My free tutorial to make your own is over on the Suzy Quilts Blog – check it out and let me know what you think!

Bees are kind of a big deal around my house! This foundation paper pieced hive was my response to Aurifil’s Earth Month prompt, blending my love of nature with our household bee obsession. I used the freezer paper method for assembly and stitched it with Aurifil thread, which offered the perfect strength and blend for those crisp, clean seams.
Aurifil Threads used: 50wt – 2312 for a perfect blend.
