As we step into the final stretch of the year, our Aurifil Artisans have turned their creative focus to something near and dear to all of us: colour, curation, and the joy of a beautifully organised thread box. November’s challenge was all about Aurifil Collections— those vibrant, carefully curated assortments that spark ideas the moment the lid lifts.
Each Artisan was invited to take inspiration from the thread collection included in their welcome pack, or any Aurifil collection box they treasure most. From timeless neutrals to bold brights, variegated wonders to speciality weights, these sets offer a window into the endless possibilities of stitch. With complete creative freedom, makers set out to design a project—big or small, intricate or simple—that showcased their chosen collection in all its glory.
This month’s showcase is bursting with colour, texture, and imagination— a celebration of what happens when a beautiful box of threads becomes the catalyst for something extraordinary. We’re thrilled to share the November Artisan Showcase with you. Let’s dive in and explore the artistry sparked by these beloved collections!

For my November Aurifil Artisan project, I used the Suzy Quilts Evolve Cotton 8wt Collection to stitch an earthy, textural butterfly on a quilted drawstring bag. I’ll be sharing the tutorial very soon if you’d like to make your own and create a special, reusable way of gifting.

I used the Aurifil Collection box of threads, Sunsetridge by Minki Kim for this month’s challenge. I was inspired to make a collection of machine embroidered leaves based on the colours of falling autumn leaves. I used all 7 of the collection thread colours, combining them within the embroidery to create further shades. I was really happy with the results and all the combination possibilities.

I absolutely love jeans, they are such a wearable garment, and adding my own little touches makes them extra special! Here I have used the Tula Sunrise Thread Collection to add a pop of colour and detail to the side panel of my newest jeans. I love the obre rainbow effect created by this thread collection.

For the November Aurifil Artisan Challenge, we were tasked with using one of the Aurifil thread collections. I used City Streets Sampler by Jemima Flendt, Tied With A Ribbon. I used all 10 thread colors! This 45×47 inch art quilt is titled “Stay Gold”. It is inspired by Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” and traces the arc of a life. The dark middle reflects the difficult seasons we all pass through, while the bright top holds onto hope. Stay gold.

Eight Sara(h)s, eight blocks, eight colors. This quilt celebrates fun, friendship, and creative community. Each block was self-drafted by each Sara(h), sight unseen, then stitched into a vibrant top. This quilt travelled across the country for each of us to hand-quilt and embroider. Each Sara(h) added her own magic, just as each Sara(h) adds her own meaning to the name we share. The final quilt is a nod to individuality, connection, and Sara(h)hood.

I used four colors from the City Streets Sampler collection to sew three festive mini projects: a fabric gift card holder, a quilted mug rug, and a set of bowl cozies. The Light Jade, Medium Mint, Medium Red, and Oyster spools paired perfectly with the holiday palette of Christmas in the Cabin. These projects will also appear in my upcoming Quilt Scouts Digital Advent Calendar.

The beautiful new collection by my Quilty friend Sewspicious, Vickeidy Plybon, called Hilos de Alegría is a soft pastel rainbow of Cotton 50wt threads. I decided to use that rainbow to inspire a multicolour Christmas hexie stocking (super fun pattern from @modernhandcraft) using all of my solid scraps. I used all of the thread colours, changing the colour for each stitch line, to quilt the hexies onto the stocking fabric. I repeated the quilting design on the back too! This project taught me some new skills like thread basting hexies and I have to say it is very addicting!

Foundations Mini (Cotton 28wt) is a great collection by Aurifil for trying out this versatile weight of thread. It’s substantial enough for a stronger visual interest than Cotton 50wt. It also works well for larger letters of my Quilted Grotesk Micro. Not content to let these Tiny Quilts just be, I mounted them on canvases painted in coordinating colors.

This English paper-pieced bed quilt I’m making for my niece is slow going, but I’ve got all the colours needed for my contemporary star design in the Glorious Handwork Collection.

Stars aligned back in August for this month’s challenge. I tested the Solstice Bloom block designed by Vickeidy Plybon (now released as part of the Solstice Sampler 2025). I pieced and quilted it with the Hilos de Alegría collection box curated by Vickeidy, which happened to match perfectly with the fabrics I chose for the block – the same fabrics I ordered to make the “Bunny and Tree” postcard (August challenge) that I sent to Vickeidy in October.

The thread collection by Vickeidy Plybon, Hilos di Alegria, or “Threads of Joy” seemed like the perfect choice for making this sweet and happy kitty bag for my seven year old niece for Christmas. I used the thread colors to inspire my fabric choice and chose to make the little bag more posh by densely quilting a 1/4″ grid all over the exterior panels. It was fun to experience my sewing being directed by thread, rather than fabric – a first for me.

Here’s my mini quilt for the November Aurifil Artisan challenge. I received the It Takes a Village collection by Jennifer Long, containing Cotton Floss. I split the red floss for my appliqué thread and used all the rest in the wild zigzag embroidery. So fun to work intuitively and quickly. I’m super happy with the result.

My Secret Weapons for the Aurifil November Challenge! I used the Box Collection challenge to finally finish my #AppliquéYourDay quilt blocks (all 72 small applique’s)! My needle-turn appliqué is fueled by not one but two Aurifil 80wt boxes: the magnificent Sarah Fielke’s Everyday Appliqué (20 spools!)— my studio staple for colour— and my curated Appliqué Your Day 7-spool ‘sew on the go’ set. Both ensure seamless results! P.S. The full quilt pattern will be available in 2026!

I’m always happy to use a collection because the selected colors create a perfect palette. This is true for the Foundations Mini 12wt collection of pure cotton thread, which has a wonderful range of 10 rainbow colors. I decided to incorporate all 10 colors into a purse embroidery, letting my fingers stitch slowly an eye and a bird in a boho style. It was a very relaxing moment.

Cotton 28wt is the thread I use most often. I always use it for topstitching on bags and pencil cases. Changing colors in the middle of the seam so that the thread matches the fabric can be a bit time-consuming, but the result is always worth the extra effort.

With this linen scarf project I wanted to explore and experiment with different textures and Sharon’s thread collection was perfect for this as it includes two different thread weights in gorgeous coordinating pastel shades – ideal for a mixture of hand stitching and machine embroidery. After many enjoyable hours of relaxing stitching & sewing, this super chunky, double layered and one of a kind scarf is certainly going to keep me warm this winter!

One of my friend’s birthdays was coming up, and I made a Hemingway Pouch designed by Center Street Quilts. My friend will be using it as a Kindle case and she’s quite the voracious reader, so I know it will be well-loved!

Last year, I used my extensive collection of Ruby Star Society Scraps to make a rainbow Lonestar Quilt from Patty Murphy’s Zero Waste Quilting. The opportunity to use Jemima’s City Streets Sampler collection finally gave me the push I needed to prioritize quilting this beauty. Cotton 50wt is always my favorite, and matching the threads to the sections of the star offers a subtle pizazz to an already bright and cheery quilt.

I used the beautiful Enchanted Cotton Floss collection by Susan Ache to bring this picture from the Oregon coast to life. A couple years ago, my mom and I took the scenic route from Portland to Eugene and stopped at every lookout we passed. The wildflowers on the side of the road caught my eye then, and now will last forever in this show stopping embroidery hoop!

I LOVE log cabin quilts and it felt like the perfect improv-y way to use a really fun collection of textural fabrics for this gift for my sister who just became a new mom 🥹 When you have a baby, the world looks to their darling little fingers and feet, adorable button nose and chin, but I wanted to make sure that my sister felt seen, loved, and celebrated too- with a gift just for her. As she takes on the new title of “someone’s mom”, I love her even more dearly for this thing that we share. I used my thread from ‘The Wellness Collection‘ by Sarah Ashford to add a sweet little touch to the back of the quilt before gifting! Quilting: Gigi Thorsen

I used 6 of the 7 threads in the Hilos de Alegría by Vickeidy Plybon to quilt a Holiday Party quilt block which I then used to create a throw pillow. I used the warm colors of the tread collection quilt the pink fabric and used the cool colors to quilt the purple fabric. For the background fabric I used color 2515 in Cotton 50wt to bring it all together.
