Vickeidy is a radiant presence in the quilting community— an inspired maker, a thoughtful storyteller, and a generous human who leads with both creativity and compassion. Her work is joyful, bold, and beautifully intentional, and so is the way she shows up for the people around her.
Rooted in a deep love for color, tradition, and community, Hilos de Alegría (“Threads of Joy”) features seven small spools of our 100% cotton 50wt thread arranged in a soft, expressive rainbow. Each color was chosen with care, reflecting Vickeidy’s modern aesthetic, her love of bright solids, and the happiness she finds in making with her hands— and sharing that joy with others.
We’ve had the privilege of working with Vickeidy over the past few years first as an Aurifil Artisan and now as an Aurifil Designer, and we can say without hesitation that we’ve loved every moment. Beyond the stunning projects she creates, we admire the intention she brings to her work, her openness in sharing her process, and her unwavering commitment to uplifting and advocating for her fellow humans. She is a true bridge-builder within the quilting world, and we’re endlessly grateful for the light she brings to this community.
Vickeidy’s voice is one that deserves to be followed and celebrated. As a proud bilingual creator, she thoughtfully shares her work in both Spanish and English— ensuring that more makers feel seen, welcomed, and inspired. In that same spirit, we’re excited to share this interview in both languages as well. Let’s start at the beginning— how did you first discover quilting and sewing? Was there a specific person who introduced you to the craft, or are you self-taught?
I discovered quilting by accident. I grew up surrounded by sewing. My grandmother and mother were both makers, so fabric, thread, and sewing machines were always part of the background of my childhood. But it wasn’t until adulthood that I really discovered quilting for myself. It all started when I bought a vintage Singer 99 to refurbish and gift to my mom, because it reminded me of the machine she used to own back in the Dominican Republic. I had no idea what I was doing, but I looked up tutorials, learned how to take it apart, and even ended up rewiring the pedal and motor. I had so much fun with the process that I began buying and flipping more vintage machines.
Eventually, I came across a Singer 221 Featherweight. While researching that model, I learned it was considered the perfect machine for quilters. At the time, I didn’t even know what quilting was— so I googled it, and that little search opened up a whole new world for me.
At first, I was completely self-taught: watching tutorials, following patterns, and making plenty of mistakes along the way. But over time, I found my own rhythm and fell in love with the storytelling and creativity that quilting allows.
What inspired you to begin sharing your work online as Sewspicious? What does that name mean to you?
Sewspicious doesn’t really have a deep meaning. When I first started sharing online, I was running the Sewspicious account with my friend Morgann Clark (@morgannmakes). We came up with the name while brainstorming ideas and watching The Bachelor. We kept saying the guys were weird and suspicious, and then had a lightbulb moment! What if we played on that and made it Sewspicious? And the name of the account was born.
You’re known for your use of bold, bright solids and striking modern designs. What draws you to this aesthetic, and how has it evolved over time?
I’ve always been drawn to bold, bright colors, it’s how I see and experience the world. Color feels alive to me, and solids in particular let the shapes and movement of a quilt design really shine without distraction. When I first started quilting, I experimented with lots of prints and palettes, but over time I realized I kept coming back to solids on white (light) background.
How do you approach color selection in your work— do you start with a palette or let the project guide you?
Honestly, I like to just play with color combinations that speak to me. I usually start by designing my patterns in grayscale so I can focus on the shapes and structure first, and then I layer in colors that feel right for the design. Most of the time I gravitate toward a four- or five-color palette, or sometimes I’ll keep it simple with a bold two-tone quilt.
Your quilting has a fresh, contemporary feel. What do you love about modern quilting and how do you define it for yourself?
I love that modern quilting lets me play with color, scale, and layout while still using the skills I learned from traditional quilting. For me it’s all about having fun, experimenting, and making something that feels fresh and personal.
You are wildly creative well beyond your quilting practice. What are some of your favorite things to make other than quilts? Do you have a go-to project type or technique?
I don’t have a ton of time to explore other types of projects or techniques, but I do love trying different creative things when I can. Lately I’ve been enjoying embroidery, and I dabble in cross stitching even though I never really document it. I keep telling myself I want to get more into embroidery, but honestly I’d need about four extra hours in my day for that to happen.
What fuels your creativity and keeps you inspired to make? Are there specific people, places, or moments that spark your ideas?
A lot of things inspire me. Nature, travel, my family, and seeing what other makers are creating all keep me excited to make. I get ideas from random color combos I notice throughout the day or patterns I see in everyday life. And spending time with my kids is a big one. Their curiosity and joy remind me to keep things playful and open when I’m creating.
What are your favorite types of projects to work on when you just want to create for the pure joy of it?
When I just want to make something for the joy of it, I reach for small, colorful projects I can finish in a day or two. Mini quilts and little paper piecing blocks for my Midnight Garden quilt let me play with ideas without any pressure. I love when the process feels rewarding on its own, not just because I end up with a finished piece.
We had the absolute pleasure of working with you during your two years as an Aurifil Artisan. What first drew you to Aurifil thread, and what keeps you reaching for it again and again?
I was first drawn to Aurifil because the thread felt so smooth and the quality was consistent. It instantly made sewing and quilting more enjoyable. Before Aurifil I didn’t even know thread weights were a thing or that they had different uses, so learning that opened up a whole new world for me. I keep reaching for Aurifil because it lets me focus on the creative part instead of worrying about breakage or tangles. And the colors are beautiful and inspiring, which always matters in my work.
Now you’ve taken that relationship even further with your very own thread collection! What inspired you to pursue a collection with Aurifil?
I wanted to create a thread collection that really shows my approach to color and design—colors I actually use and love in my quilts. I also wanted to see a collection from a Spanish-speaking maker and a person of color at Aurifil, since that representation was missing. Working with them felt like a natural way to share my vision and give makers threads they can have fun within their own projects.
Tell us about Hilos de Alegría— what is the story behind the name and the colors you chose?
“Hilos de Alegría,” or “Threads of Joy,” really captures what quilting means to me. The colors were inspired by the vibrant, warm tones of my country where everything feels brighter and more alive. I wanted makers to feel that same joy when they’re making something, whether it’s a quilt, garment, or small project.
The collection features a beautiful, soft rainbow of 50wt threads. What do these colors represent for you, and how do you hope makers will use them in their own work?
The colors are all about warmth and brightness. They’re bright but still versatile. I hope people use them in whatever way makes them happy and brings them joy, whether that’s experimenting, creating contrast and harmony, or just adding a little extra joy to their projects.
You’re a strong and consistent voice within the Spanish-speaking quilting community. Why is it important to you to share your content in both English and Spanish?
I want quilting to feel for everyone. Sharing in English and Spanish lets me connect with makers who don’t always see themselves represented and reach out to Spanish-speaking quilters out there. I just want everyone to feel welcome and inspired to create.
What has the response been like from your community as they’ve watched your creative journey and now this amazing new chapter with Aurifil?
The response has been amazing and I feel so thankful to be supported and loved. It’s been really cool to see people celebrate creativity and to watch my community grow with me. Their excitement and encouragement make every project even more special.
What’s next for you creatively? Are there any upcoming projects or dreams you’re excited to pursue?
Right now I have way too many ideas and not enough time. I’ve got a few quilt patterns in the works, some fun collaborations, and I’m dreaming about a fabric line way down the road. For now I’m just excited about my upcoming patterns and getting to stretch my designing muscles with different techniques.
Lastly, what advice would you give to makers who are just starting out and looking to find their voice in the quilting world?
I’d say start by making what excites you, not what you think you should make. Play around, try new things, and don’t worry about mistakes because they usually teach you the most. Over time your style and voice will show up on their own and you’ll see that quilting isn’t about following rules, it’s about having fun and making something that feels like you.

Empecemos desde el principio, ¿cómo descubriste el quilting y la costura? ¿Alguien te enseñó o eres autodidacta?
Descubrí el quilting por accidente. Crecí rodeada de costura, mi abuela y mi mamá siempre hacían cosas con telas, así que los hilos y las máquinas de coser siempre estuvieron ahí en mi infancia. Pero no fue hasta adulta que realmente descubrí el quilting por mi cuenta. Todo empezó cuando compré una Singer 99 vintage para restaurarla y regalársela a mi mamá porque me recordaba a la máquina que ella tenía en la República Dominicana. No tenía idea de lo que estaba haciendo, pero busqué tutoriales, aprendí a desmontarla e incluso terminé recableando el pedal y el motor. Me divertí tanto que empecé a comprar y restaurar más máquinas vintage. Eventualmente encontré una Singer 221 Featherweight. Mientras investigaba sobre ese modelo, descubrí que se consideraba la máquina perfecta para hacer quilts. En ese momento ni siquiera sabía qué era el quilting, así que lo busqué en Google y esa pequeña búsqueda me abrió un mundo nuevo.

¿Qué te inspiró a empezar a compartir tu trabajo en línea como Sewspicious? ¿Qué significa ese nombre para ti?
Sewspicious no tiene un significado profundo. Cuando empecé a compartir en línea, llevaba la cuenta con mi amiga Morgann Clark (@morgannmakes). Se nos ocurrió el nombre mientras veíamos The Bachelor y comentábamos lo raros y sospechosos que eran los chicos. De repente tuvimos la idea de jugar con eso y así nació Sewspicious.
Eres conocida por usar colores sólidos, brillantes y diseños modernos llamativos. ¿Qué te atrae de esta estética y cómo ha evolucionado con el tiempo?
Siempre me han gustado los colores fuertes y brillantes, así veo y vivo el mundo. Para mí, el color se siente vivo, y los sólidos permiten que las formas y el movimiento de un diseño de quilt realmente brillen sin distracciones. Al principio probé muchos estampados y paletas, pero con el tiempo me di cuenta de que siempre volvía a los sólidos sobre fondo blanco o claro.
¿Cómo eliges los colores en tu trabajo, empiezas con una paleta o dejas que el proyecto te guíe?
La verdad me gusta jugar con combinaciones que me llamen la atención. Normalmente diseño mis patrones en escala de grises primero para enfocarme en las formas y la estructura, y después pongo los colores que me parecen correctos para el diseño. Casi siempre uso una paleta de cuatro o cinco colores, o a veces solo dos para algo más simple pero llamativo.
Tu quilting tiene un aire fresco y contemporáneo. ¿Qué te gusta del quilting moderno y cómo lo defines para ti?
Me encanta que el quilting moderno me deja jugar con color, tamaño y diseño mientras uso lo que aprendí del quilting tradicional. Para mí se trata de divertirme, experimentar y hacer algo que se sienta fresco y personal.
Eres súper creativa más allá del quilting. ¿Qué otras cosas te gusta hacer además de quilts? ¿Tienes algún proyecto o técnica favorita?
No tengo mucho tiempo para explorar otros proyectos, pero me gusta probar cosas cuando puedo. Últimamente disfruto el bordado y también hago un poco de punto de cruz aunque no lo documente mucho. Siempre me digo que quiero meterme más en el bordado, pero la verdad necesitaría unas cuatro horas más al día para eso.
¿Qué alimenta tu creatividad y te mantiene inspirada para crear? ¿Hay personas, lugares o momentos que te den ideas?
Muchas cosas me inspiran: la naturaleza, viajar, mi familia y ver lo que otros makers hacen. También me dan ideas combinaciones de colores que veo en el día a día o patrones que noto en la vida cotidiana. Pasar tiempo con mis hijos también inspira mucho. Su curiosidad y alegría me recuerdan a mantener las cosas juguetonas y abiertas cuando creo.
¿Cuáles son tus tipos de proyectos favoritos cuando solo quieres crear por puro gusto?
Cuando quiero hacer algo por diversión, busco proyectos pequeños y coloridos que pueda terminar en uno o dos días. Mini quilts y bloques de paper piecing para mi quilt Midnight Garden me permiten probar ideas sin presión. Me gusta cuando el proceso es divertido por sí mismo, no solo por terminar algo.
Fue un placer trabajar contigo durante tus dos años como Aurifil Artisan. ¿Qué te atrajo primero del hilo Aurifil y por qué sigues usándolo?
Lo primero que me atrajo fue que el hilo se sentía suave y la calidad era consistente. Hacer quilting y coser se volvió mucho más agradable. Antes de Aurifil no sabía que existían los diferentes pesos de hilo o sus usos, y eso abrió un mundo nuevo para mí. Sigo usando Aurifil porque me deja concentrarme en la creatividad sin preocuparme por que se rompa o se enrede. Y los colores son hermosos e inspiradores, algo que siempre importa en mi trabajo.
Ahora llevaste esa relación aún más lejos con tu propia colección de hilos. ¿Qué te inspiró a hacerla con Aurifil?
Quise crear una colección que mostrara mi forma de trabajar con el color y el diseño, con hilos que realmente uso y me encantan en mis quilts. También quería ver una colección de alguien hispanohablante y persona de color en Aurifil porque hacía falta esa representación. Trabajar con ellos fue la forma natural de compartir mi visión y darles a otros makers hilos con los que se puedan divertir en sus propios proyectos.
Cuéntanos sobre Hilos de Alegría. ¿Cuál es la historia detrás del nombre y los colores que elegiste?
Hilos de Alegría refleja lo que significa el quilting para mí. Los colores se inspiraron en los tonos vibrantes y cálidos de mi país donde todo se siente más vivo y brillante. Quise que la gente sintiera esa misma alegría cuando hagan algo, ya sea un quilt, una prenda o un proyecto pequeño.
La colección tiene un hermoso arcoíris de hilos 50wt. ¿Qué representan esos colores para ti y cómo esperas que los makers los usen?
Los colores son sobre calidez y alegría. Son brillantes pero versátiles. Espero que la gente los use como les haga feliz y les dé alegría, ya sea experimentando, creando contrastes, armonía o simplemente agregando un toque extra de diversión a sus proyectos.
Eres una voz fuerte y constante dentro de la comunidad hispanohablante de quilting. ¿Por qué es importante compartir tu contenido en inglés y español?
Quiero que el quilting sea para todos. Compartir en inglés y español me permite conectar con makers que no siempre se ven representados y llegar a quilters hispanohablantes. Solo quiero que todos se sientan bienvenidos e inspirados a crear.
¿Cómo ha sido la respuesta de tu comunidad al ver tu camino creativo y este nuevo capítulo con Aurifil?
La respuesta ha sido increíble y me siento muy agradecida por tanto apoyo y cariño. Ha sido genial ver cómo la gente celebra la creatividad y cómo mi comunidad crece conmigo. Su entusiasmo y ánimo hacen que cada proyecto sea aún más especial.
¿Qué sigue para ti creativamente? ¿Hay proyectos o sueños que te emocionen?
Ahora mismo tengo demasiadas ideas y muy poco tiempo. Tengo unos patrones de quilts en marcha, algunas colaboraciones divertidas y sueño con una línea de telas para el futuro. Por ahora estoy emocionada con mis próximos patrones y de poder estirar mis habilidades de diseño con diferentes técnicas.
Por último, ¿qué consejo le darías a los makers que recién empiezan y quieren encontrar su voz en el mundo del quilting?
Yo diría que empiecen haciendo lo que les emocione, no lo que creen que deberían hacer. Jueguen, prueben cosas nuevas y no se preocupen por los errores, que muchas veces enseñan más que cualquier otra cosa. Con el tiempo su estilo y voz van a aparecer solos y van a ver que el quilting no es seguir reglas, es divertirse y hacer algo que realmente sea suyo.
