Clean lines, bright colors and a fresh feel can be felt from everything that Carolyn Friedlander creates. This young architect turned away from the traditional to find a way to express her inner artist without boundries.
Carolyn grew up in Lake Wales, Florida on a cattle and citrus ranch, where she spent much of her free time immersed in various creative activities such as drawing, painting, and sewing. She pursued a formal design education in college and graduated with a B.A. in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006. After a stint in the professional architecture world, Carolyn sought a different occupation, one that would allow her to be wildly creative, utilize her design background, and work with her hands. It so happened that later that year, 2009, she learned to quilt. Though she had long known how to sew, quilting was a revelation to her, as it entailed a whole new set of tools, materials, and, most importantly, creative possibilities. She quickly recognized quilting as a new passion and set out to learn everything she could about the craft. In 2010, she founded her business, Carolyn Friedlander LLC.
Carolyn’s custom machine quilting has received recognition at local and national shows. As a young quilter with a design school background, she was drawn to bright and bold fabrics and saw a need for clean, modern patterns. Thus, she began to create her own patterns. In 2011, she diversified her line by developing a line of art quilt stamps that offer makers new creative opportunities for surface design, and her first fabric line with Robert Kaufman debuted in the fall of 2012. Carolyn’s designs have been featured in many magazines, including Stitch, Love Quilting and Patchwork, Generation Q, and American Patchwork and Quilting.
Carolyn’s newest fabric line for Robert Kaufman Fabrics Botanics is filled with a full spectrum of colours to tonals that can be incorporated into any quilting project.
Carolyn’s love of designing also has been used to create quilting patterns and fun, one of a kind paper piecing patterns like local.
Her booth at the International Quilt Market in Houston was filled with her unique designs that truly reflect her origins.

To compliment her free spirit and her personal design style Carolyn’s Aurifil colors were chosen for a few reasons.
“First, many of them are colors that I go through spool after spool of–like the orangey-reds, blues, grays, yellows and creams. Second, I also incorporated colors that match the colors in my Botanics fabric line. When I first started quilting with this line, I already had the perfect reds, creams, blues, and grays, but what I lacked were the right greens and turquoises to match. Since getting my hands on those, sewing has been super easy, and I wanted to include them in the set.
To sort of wrap things up, it’s the perfect set to work with Botanics, as well as a grouping of my favorite Aurifil colors that I use all the time.”

I love the color blue and use it in as many quilt as possible.
I love using contrasting colors (purple and orange) and I tend to use grey as my neutral.
My FAVORITE color to use in my quilts is white! Why white? Because the use of white can change the look of a block with negative space or help to emphasize your other colors! It adds freshness but doesn’t beg for attention. 🙂

Oh my gosh, favorite colour…. how to choose. I love all colours and each one used well is perfection. Looking back over the dozen or so quilts I have completed doesn’t help me to determine my favorite, so I will tell you my favorite colour right now. It’s a pale blue-green accented with dark brown.

I love to use any colour in my quilts. The more colour the better. If I was to choose a favourite it would be the beautiful Jade. Thread I use with all my quilt piecing is the Aurifil medium gray because it blends so well with many colours.

I’m working on my first quilt, and loving the ivory and burgundy combo. For the next project though, I want something brighter and more cheerful, so I’ll be looking at teals, pinks, and yellows. Maybe some lime green!

I’m a color freak! As a child I spent more time rearranging my crayons into different color families than I spent actually coloring. I love all color. But I’d have to go with blue for the answer. When I finally got “brave enough” to move away from white, I fell in love with aqua. Did a few quilts with aqua, and then fell in love with a light yellow color. Once you start dabbling in color, it’s hard to stop. Makes a big difference in the appearance of the quilt too!

My favorite color of thread to use is light brown. It is a neutral color and works well with almost everything. Also, I liked the Aurifil page a few days ago, and I also started following on Pinterest today. Unfortunately, I am going to have to put time limits on me for being on my iPad because I would fawn over these spectacular pieces ALL day!!!!

Only one color?!?! But I love using all of them! I always used to lean towards greens and blues, but since I started quilting I’ve learned to love every color – even those crazy/bold oranges – for the qualities that each one can bring to my work. To quote Spock: “Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.” Sounds like the prefect description for colors in quilting!

That’s a hard question because I love colour. A lot of my quilts have green in them even if it’s not the main colour.

Blue seems to show up in every quilt I make in someway, sometimes small and sometimes the main color, all shades and sizes!
My favorite color to use in my quilts changes over time. I can make a scrappy quilt or a two color quilt, but I usually fall back on off-white/tan background. I’m hoping my next quilt will be a taupe Japanese style quilt.

Lime green – sometimes a little, sometimes a lot! Love how it brightens things up – pops against darks, and can hold its own with brights.

I do already like Aurfil on fb and enjoy the posts! It would be difficult to pin me down to a favorite color or even pallete. I just completed a gradation fabric – woven strip effect which covered much of the color spectrum.

With each project I use a thread color that complements or accents just so. Sometime I use a very contrasting color to highlight the work on the back of the quilt.

My favourite colour for my quilts?? That’s a really tough question – I don’t think I have a favourite, but I do have a most common colour – cream. I think that I am about to change that though. I am stating to look through patterns and fabrics and am leaning toward vibrant colours set off with greys. Maybe grey will be my new favourite!!!
