We are so excited to celebrate the 3rd pattern release from Quilt Theory, the design collective made up of Yvonne from Quilting Jetgirl, Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs, Daisy of Warm Folk, Kitty of Night Quilter, Lorinda of Laurel, Poppy and Pine, Stephanie of Late Night Quilter, and Michelle Bartholomew. These talented women are all dedicated Aurifil users and we’ve been honored to be a part of their pattern releases since they launched back in February 2016.
Quilt Theory’s goal is to create simple and modern quilt patterns, printed on small cards. They are a strong team, talented and fierce, and we always love seeing their new designs. Almost equally as intriguing are the photographs that serve to feature the quilts, all by Michelle Bartholomew. We’re actually a little giddy to showcase them all here!
Up the Ladder was inspired by traditional quilt ladders used to showcase and store quilts and is a lap-sized, jelly roll or mini charm pack friendly pattern. The pattern combines beginner level piecing into a strong geometric design. It uses Cotton Couture solids by Michael Miller. Cheryl quilted it in a topography like design using 50 wt white (color 2024) Aurifil thread. The 50 wt worked well to create texture but not stand out too much on the darker colored fabrics.

Inspired by the majestic evergreen trees ubiquitous in Maine, Into the Forest plays with two sizes of the same block to create a simple graphic tree design with a crisp and clean aesthetic. It was partially pieced and quilted by Kitty, and partially pieced and quilted by Sue Bishop — both using Aurifil 50wt 2024-White. Into the Forest was made with Cloud 9 Fabrics.

The design of Pulsing Plus was inspired by thinking about the way a supportive community of people creates ripples of interaction and how in sync people can become. It was quilted with a large spiral on Yvonne’s domestic sewing machine (a Juki TL-2200 QVP Mini) with 50wt Aurifil 2024 (White) using a walking foot. Fabrics are Cotton Couture Solids in Bright White, Raspberry, Peach, Lemon, Turquoise, Caribbean, and Marine (backing and binding).

Kayak Point was named after one of Lorinda’s favorite beaches in her home state of Washington. She spent countless hours there with her dad and sister playing, crabbing, and learning to fish. The elongated diamond shapes remind her of kayaks lined up in rows. Kayak Point was made with Cotton Couture solids from Michael Miller and was hand quilted with Aurifil 12wt thread.

Skydust was inspired by the big Texas sky and its breathtaking, multicolored sunsets. Almost every evening, Stephanie and her children gasp with delight as they drive through the rolling Texas hill country while the sun slowly drops in the sky. While the pattern is by Stephanie, this version of Skydust was sewn and quilted by Sue Bishop. The quilt uses Alison Glass Sun Prints 2017 and Aurifil thread.

Picnic Play is a really fun one-block pattern that uses 7 colors in such a cool way! The colors are randomly matched up so it’s a more laid-back approach, something that designer Michelle Bartholomew really enjoyed. Picnic Play was quilted with straight lines with a walking foot using Aurifil thread. Michelle wanted a dense, hardy feel because when she designed it, she envisioned it being the perfect quilt to take on a picnic.
