Today, we are thrilled to be a part of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop celebrating the new book release by Aurifil Artisans, Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs and Paige Alexander of Quilted Blooms!
The book contains 16 Modern Plus Sign quilt designs from easy to more challenging, using a variety of techniques such as traditional piecing, applique, and foundation paper piecing. The hop will run for two weeks and has over 40 stops, featuring various takes on designs from the book.
Cheryl and Paige love quilting their own quilts and offered to share some of their thoughts on how they quilted some of the quilts from the book.
Hey everyone! Thanks so much for joining us today. We’re super excited about the release of our new book and are just thrilled to embark on this fantastic blog tour in celebration.
For our book quilts, we chose to quilt either using a matching thread for each fabric color within the quilt top or with an allover quilting design. No matter which quilting design was used, Aurifil 50wt is our favorite as it blends well into the quilt top, adding a terrific texture to the finished quilt.
Matching the thread color to the fabric in the quilt top is great way of adding texture to the quilt without taking focus away from the piecing. While it tends to extend quilting time by adding more thread starts and stops, it can produce wonderfully intricate designs that can highlight certain areas of the piecing. Matching the thread to the fabric color is also a wonderful method to hide any bobbles and little mistakes as the thread color blends in with the underlying fabric.
Row Addition, Faceted Rings, and Tribal Plus are examples of quilting designs where the thread matches the fabric colors.
For other quilts in the book, we decided to use a more allover design, with one thread color being quilted over multiple colors and fabrics. In these quilts, thread colors that blended in best with the background fabric were chosen.
Transparency Chains, Plus Surround, and Rick Rack Runner are examples of overall quilting designs.
