Parts Dept by Victoria Findlay Wolfe

Victoria Findlay Wolfe is a steadfast Aurifil champion and we like to think that the love and respect is mutual. We get a little giddy every time she has a new collection to introduce, each one lovely and unique, but somehow perfectly partnered together. Her latest collection with Marcus Fabrics is Parts Dept, a stunning array of modern batiks. The collection was inspired by the way Victoria builds a quilt. She calls the pieces of the puzzle the ‘Parts Dept’ and each step along the way is, or becomes, a Part. For these batik fabrics, she found inspiration in ordinary building parts — peg board, saw blades, paint brushes, fencing and more.

Victoria’s coordinating threads are not only a perfect range to coordinate with Parts Dept, but is also a fantastic collection of modern neutrals.

“I am always running out of good neutral threads.  To me a nice blender variegated thread is magic when piecing or Quilting.  I love the soft shade and even good BLACK thread for when you need it!  The Parts Dept is a little bit rock and roll with a fresh look at Modern Batiks!  My Aurifil threads work perfectly!”

  1. I used to use white on white for my neutrals but have branched out to white with a hint of pinks, blues and grays.

  2. I loved reading this blog. Victoria you are a breath of fresh air and your work is inspirational! Looking forward to learning more about your Parts Dept. line:)

  3. I use shades of gray for my neutrals. Love this collection of thread (and the fabric line). Thank you for the chance to win.

  4. my favorite neutrals are light gray, beige, and aurifil 2205 (a light peachy color).

  5. Really pretty fabrics and threads. I like shades of grays and tan colors for my neutrals. Have a great day!

  6. I like to mix it up when choosing my neutral threads, so I have lots of Aurifil cones in shades of pastels, beige/tan/browns, grays and blacks. I love my options!

  7. I have a set of neutral threads because it always surprises me which I like best when I spool out the thread over my quilt fabrics. However, the one I use the most is 2600.

  8. I use boring white . . . but I’d love to expand my horizons and learn to use something else!

  9. I enjoy using white on whites. Yet, there are always every color of the rainbow to choose from!

  10. I like using Aurifil 2324 (a pale gold color) and Auriful 2600 (a pale grey) for both piecing and all-over quilting depending on the colors in the quilt top.

  11. I usually use a basic white or ivory for quilting, but would love to venture into other colors…I need to!

  12. Since the Japanese quilts exploded upon the scene, my ideas of neutrals have changed considerably. Now I use what goes with the main fabrics I am using.

  13. I usually use light gray as my neutral color — but sometimes will use cream or beige.
Victoria’s quilts are so appealing and colorful — she has amazing talent for designing.

  14. I almost exclusively piece with grey #2600. I have it in the very large spool for my home machine and the smaller for my class machine. I was introduced to Aurifil early on and never looked back. Love all the different colors to quilt with also.

  15. my go to thread #2600 (pale gray) I’ve used spools & spools of it for piecing & quilting. I also love the variegated threads for quilting.

  16. I always make sure I have Aurifil 2600 on hand and recently started using 2123 light yellow as well. Love them both!

  17. I like the thread colors. They would match a lot of my own parts department! Thanks for a chance to win the book and box of thread!

  18. I love my Aurifil colors (!), but my favorite neutrals are (or, have been) Aurifil Dove 2600 and Aurifil Natural White 2021…
But, seeing Victoria’s choices of Aurifil Aluminium 2615 and Aurifil Silver Fox 4670 in her collection, I may have some new favorite neutrals!
Beautiful fabrics, quilts, and Aurifil thread collection!!

  19. On scrap quilts I like a variety of low volume fabrics. On other quilts I like a white on white.

  20. I love mixing up low volume prints for a background. I like them to have some interest though — small designs or little pops of color. Many of the prints from Meadow Storm seem like perfect choices to me. I want to make quilts with lots to look at and discover.

  21. I love to use a variety of black on white prints. Looking forward to Victoria’s new batik line!

  22. I use Chalk #2026 for my neutral color. I haven’t branched out and tried any other but would love to try. Thank you for a chance to win. Love your fabrics and neutrals too

  23. I used to use Natural 2021 but recently discovered Chalk 2026 and bought a large cone and find that it goes with a LOT. Airfoil is the best. I thought I try some other threads recently, but they break or create a lot of lint and Aurifil just never disappoints!!!

  24. I have large cones of 2024 and 2140, so use them mostly for piecing, and occasional quilting. I have spools of 2600, too, which also melts into most colors. The new fabrics look fun, and that box is perfect for so many quilts. Thanks!

  25. I like a lot of white on whites but I am starting to really like white-grey. Adds that extra something.

  26. Lately I have been using greys for my neutrals. I am sure that will change with the new fabrics coming out! 🙂

  27. I mostly use cream, light gray or medium gray for piecing. Pale yellow works for FMQ. It blends in very well when you don’t want the quilting to stand out.

  28. Love your new collection. Both the fabric and thread. There is so much that can be done with them.

  29. My favorite color is Dove for anything light colored. I also use a grayish green that blends great with darker fabric.

  30. I like to use grays with a hint of blue, a light tan, and colors that don’t appeal to me on their own, but that blend with many fabrics.

  31. My go-to neutrals are a pale gray, black, and variegated orange. For me and my Halloween quilts, orange is a neutral. 🙂 Thanks for the chance to win a great bundle.

  32. I love variegated threads! I must try them for piecing. My favorite piecing neutrals are 6722, 2021, 2311, and 2310. I also use a darker gray or khaki for darker fabrics. Great collection!

  33. I love 2600 grey, 2310 natural, 2021 soft white, 2900 sage, 2370 dark tan, and 2605 the perfect medium grey so much I finally started purchasing the large cones!

  34. Aurifil 2310 it’s a bitt sunny warm to me:)
Aurifil 2600 for my cool colors. Gravitate toward anything warm likes gold, orange so my personal favorite neutral to me is Aurifil 1133. THank you!

  35. I usually piece with Aurifil 2021 or 2600. I like to quilt with 2600 40 wt & have recently quilted 2 Quilts with 2912 which is a silvery green. Gorgeous!
