Quilted Aurifil Thread Box

Today we are thrilled to once again welcome Aurifil Artisan Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill of Whole Circle Studio to #Auribuzz! Sheri is sharing all the fun details about her quilted Aurifil thread box! Take it away Sheri!

I’m a big believer that inspiration is everywhere.

In 2017 I teamed up with QT Fabrics and Aurifil to introduce their new Ombre Stitches fabric and thread collections with my Sew Speedy quilt pattern.

When the beautiful Aurifil thread box arrived at my Studio, I opened this swoon-worthy collection and immediately started to think of an idea for a second special mini-quilt. Included in the Ombre Stitches Thread Collection are 50wt colors: 2710 – 2735 – 2515 – 2540 – 5017 – 2870 – 4654 – 2810 – 4660 – 4670 – 2150 – 3920

Before digging in to the new quilt idea I had, I first needed to piece and quilt my Sew Speedy quilt. For fabric, I used the Ombre Stitches collection by QT Fabrics. This sample of Sew Speedy was pieced with Aurifil 50wt White and quilted with the Aurifil Ombre Stitches Thread Collection.

Once Sew Speedy was complete, I jumped right into my new idea—an Aurifil thread-collection inspired mini quilt. And, I knew right where I was heading.

You may remember last year I designed and created a quilt for Aurifil, to commemorate and celebrate their tenth anniversary in the United States. The quilt features all 270 current colors of Aurifil’s 50wt thread.

I was interested in exploring a variation of this design.

I envisioned a mini quilt that was the exact proportions of the thread spools (just like 270 Colors), but this time arranging twelve quilted spools as they are arranged in the classic Aurifil 12 Large Spool Collection box. I used the Ombre Stitches fabric as a background for the “spool threads”. For the quilting, I free-motioned the “thread texture” using the twelve colors from the Aurifil/Ombre Stitches collection in the cross wound pattern found on the actual spools. My technique was the same as the 270 Colors quilt. You can read more about the making of the 270 Colors quilt and see a video of how I quilted the project here.

Below are closeups of the front and the back of the mini quilt:
