Our Song, Your Reflection by Andrea Tsang Jackson

Today we are thrilled to introduce Aurifil Artisan Andrea Tsang Jackson of 3rd Story Workshop! She is currently working on a wonderful collaboration that brings music and quilting together in celebration of community. Take it away Andrea!

My latest project is a collaboration between myself and award-winning singer-songwriter Meaghan Smith. My journey would not have come to be if it weren’t for the generosity and encouragement of people – quilters specifically – in my guild and in our social media community. I wanted to celebrate that in a unique way!

In tandem, I have created a quilt design and Meaghan has created a song that speaks about the importance of community and the human connections that we make. The song does not speak of quilting specifically but there are references and it reflects the quilt design. Lyrics like “Perfect imperfection” and “We’re all pieces of a great creation” really resonate with the way we create.

I used Aurifil 50wt 2600 to piece the quilt top and the same thread for quilting the clouds in the sky and feathers in the swan. Aurifil 50wt 2835 formed the waves in the underwater portion.

The project is structured as an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign so that people can preorder the pattern and/or fabric kit and get limited-edition project swag such as an enamel pin. But most importantly, the campaign gives people the opportunity to submit a photo of one of their quilts or of their quilting community to be included in the final music video.

The campaign will run until June 30. Along the way, I am sharing other quilters’ stories about what their community means to them. They’re making a star block and I will collect these to make a bee quilt by early fall. As an example, fellow Aurifil Artisan Kitty Wilkin made a tiny version of the block and says, “I’m grateful to have found this wonderful community of quilters, since living in rural Maine, there aren’t any guilds that meet near enough to me to make it possible for me to attend as a mom of little ones… Being able to connect with other quilters was such a lifeline in those wee hours of the sleepless nights, and now I consider many of those early quilty connections my dearest friends. I’m so happy to have found my tribe.”

“Your reflection
Shining like a star
Your reflection
We see who you are
This connection
Brighter together
Cause we’re all in
Your reflection.”
