Carrie curated a collection of 10 small spools of Aurifil 40wt thread, perfectly suited to play nicely with these specialty fabrics. We were excited to launch the collection along with some of Carrie’s new fabrics at Spring Market in Portland, OR a few months ago and are even more thrilled to share some of Carrie’s inspirations here with you today!

THE INTERVIEW
What first drew you to the world of sewing and quilting?
I first became interested in sewing from my grandmother. She made a lot of her own clothes, and would make matching outfits for her and my mother when she was young. And I thought “how incredible to be able to make your own clothes!?” and so that was always sort of a dream of mine to do the same. Now that she’s passed away, I have inherited quite a bit of her sewing supplies and have enjoyed having that small connection with her.
Who or what has been your greatest creative inspiration?
My greatest creative inspiration has been my children by far. The desire to want to surround them with beautiful and inspiring things was the first spark. And as my children have begun to grow, their perspectives, imaginations, and dreams have fueled many of my designs that I create.
Tell us about your latest fabric collection. What inspired the designs?
All of my fabric designs thus far have had a childlike feel to them, using soft colors and sweet designs. The designs were inspired with children in mind.
Do you have a favorite project or projects made with the collection?
I have fallen in love with making dresses for my daughter. My first attempt turned out pretty well, surprisingly, and my daughter absolutely loves her royal swan dress. The dress was made with Embrace® double gauze fabric in my Royal Swan design, and with the pale apricot colored thread to match.
When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
Aurifil discovered me first, and then I in turn came to learn about the company. I love the quality of the threads, and I absolutely LOVE that I can have color-coordinated threads to match the fabrics I’ve designed. It gives every project a very polished complete look to it when all of it seamlessly flows together.
How did you go about selecting colors for Sweet Melody Collection and what excites you most about releasing the collection to the world?
Selecting the thread colors for the Sweet Melody Collection was a pretty common sense task. I tend to use a lot of the same color palette in my fabrics and so I chose the most used colors in my fabrics and was able to perfectly match them to the Aurifil threads. I’m so excited to release this collection to the world and to every sewing enthusiast out there, to be able to offer threads that perfectly coordinate with my fabrics and to allow others to create beautiful projects as well.

Carrie’s home is in Michigan. She lives with her husband, Matt, and her two children, Melody and Shane. Along with the experience of becoming a mother to two adorable children, comes her wish to want to surround them in a warm and loving environment. And so like many mothers, Carrie started with the wish to fill their nurseries with whimsical decor.
Carrie runs a shop full of her whimsical imaginings — her designs end up as wall decals, art prints, swaddle blankets, invites, and more. She keeps drawing every extra chance she gets, perfecting her style, and expressing herself.
She absolutely loves that she has been able to turn her graphic art into fabric design. It has truly enabled her to be more creative and flexible with her projects. She is living her dream!

These darling prints are perfect for the three eye-spy quilts that I am making. I have collected and cut quite a few prints and these fabulous prints would add so much to these quilts. The drawings on these fabrics are beyond fabulous.

I don’t know what double gauze is! Can you describe it for me? I’ve sewn with minky before and all minky’s are not created equal. Anything that’s extra furry was extremely hard for me to sew with. Would you describe this new line as the smooth soft minky or the thick furry minky?
