Ocean Odyssey is a wonderfully bright and cheerful new collection, designed by Angie Steveson of Lunch Box Quilts for Island Batik. Boasting a wide range of pinks, greens, yellows, oranges, and blues, Ocean Odyssey is an underwater rainbow, perfectly accentuated by Angie’s masterful signature machine embroidery. We’ve loved seeing this one come to life and were honored to collaborative with Angie on a coordinating thread collection featuring 12 Large Spools of 50wt thread. These colors are bright and vibrant and would be equally at home as a companion to the fabrics, an addition to a thread stash, or even as an accent to your sewing room decor;).

What first drew you to the world of sewing and quilting?
I was always fascinated with sewing and crafting as a child. I was in 4H for a few years when I was younger. It wasn’t until the birth of my first child that I became interested in quilting. I wanted to make my son a quilt. My neighbor, at that time, and I decided to sign up for quilting classes. It was then I fell in love with quilting.
How did you first get involved with Island Batik?
I met Caleb and Katie at a quilt show in California. I was looking in all the vendor booths at fabrics for my upcoming quilt, Cat’s Meow. They offered to send me sample fabrics to audition for the quilt. The fabrics were “purr-fect”, and Cat’s Meow continues to be one of Lunch Box Quilts top selling patterns. Later, Mixed Mutts, Wilderness Wildlife, and an updated version of Island Breeze were all designed with Island Batiks Fabrics. I was thrilled years later when Island Batik asked me to design my own fabric line for the Ocean Odyssey quilt!
What do you love most about Batik fabrics?
Batiks are great for applique because I can use fabrics that have movement and texture in them. I like the smaller prints for the appliques and larger prints for borders. The subtle color changes within the fabrics are nice to work into the applique designs.
Tell us about Ocean Odyssey.
The Ocean Odyssey applique quilt was something that had been in my design folder for some time. I had started the designs, but it was just not coming together. I put it away for a few years. When Island Batik approached me about designing a fabric line, the timing was right. I could choose all the fabric colors and designs to be just what I wanted.

When did you first discover Aurifil threads?
I first discovered Aurifil threads when it arrived at my local quilt shop. At that time, I was not embroidering yet. I was thrilled how Aurifil 50wt thread stitched for piecing quilts. Later when designing Lunch Box Quilts pattern Autumn Wind, I decided to try Aurifil 50wt cotton for Machine Embroidery. I was using a hand dyed fabric for the applique background and I didn’t want the shine of Polyester thread with this quilt design. The appliques with the cotton thread are gorgeous on the leaves.
How did you go about selecting colors for Ocean Odyssey and what excites you most about releasing the collection to the world?
I was excited when Aurifil asked me to choose thread for an Ocean Odyssey thread collection. At first, I struggled to keep the collection to 12. I like a lot of different shades of color in my designs. Eventually I narrowed it down to 12 different colors of thread that coordinated with the Ocean Odyssey fabric line.
The thing that excites me most about releasing Ocean Odyssey to the world is that after many years of this project being only a vision it is complete. I am very happy with the designs, the fabric collection and the thread collection. The project is complete! Quilters have the option of making the quilt just as it was originally designed.
