We just adore Pat Sloan. Not only is she a true industry icon, she is also one of the sweetest people we know. She has written over 30 books, has designed hundreds of quilts, has put together countless fabric collections, curates thread collections for Aurifil, hosts a weekly podcast for American Patchwork & Quilting, organizes the Aurifil Designer of the Month program, and still manages to travel extensively for her lectures while peppering in fun events all along the way. She is a tireless crusader for quilting and sewing education and is generally seen as an inspiration to all;). So… we love Pat. Pat is just amazing.
Today we have the distinct pleasure of celebrating her new book release! Celebrate the Seasons (Martingale/That Patchwork Place) is a gorgeous collection of 14 easy quilts and companion projects, all perfectly styled and wonderfully patterned.

Celebrate the Seasons targets projects for Spring, Summer, Winter & Fall, offering color suggestions, settings, and easy to follow instructions. It includes a hefty dose of education for those who might need a reminder on how to make a half square triangle or what to do for a Square-on-Square unit. This type of education is particularly helpful for quilters like me… maybe we consider ourselves beginners, maybe advanced beginners, but we certainly don’t know all of the shortcuts, nor all of the lingo. This is truly where Pat shines. Her passion for bringing this art to the world comes through in her writing and her patterns are notoriously easy to follow, even for beginners.

I committed to creating a block to feature in this post and I’ll admit to being a little gun shy when I first flipped through the pages. I settled on the Summer Sky Pillow, thinking it was an achievable project, but also feeling thoroughly intimidated by what looked to be a complicated block.
I procrastinated a little more than I should have, but got quite a surprise once I finally dove in. Pat’s step-by-step instructions are so easy to follow. She breaks the components of the block down into small sections that are easy to construct and not at all daunting. I was even able to chain piece most of the sections to save myself a little time.

I used fabrics from FRIEDLANDER by Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman, a delightful spool of Aurifil 50wt in 2021, and a few of my trusty Olfa tools. I didn’t quite get to finish it up into a pillow, but I think it has great potential! <3
If you’ve been eyeing this book, I’d suggest grabbing a copy.

It’s not just a tool to create a series of beautiful projects for your home, it’s quilty education and we could all use a bit of that from time to time.

A special and amazing added bonus… check out this spectacular tulip block that Pat sent my way. This one will be finding a special place on my wall. Sending huge and exuberant thanks to Pat for the block, for giving me this opportunity, and for helping me to push the boundaries of what I thought were my own quilting limits. Goes to show that if we all support each other, raise each other up, and sing each other’s praises, we can accomplish wonderful things. <3

Pat Sloan is a designer, author, and lecturer, and with her weekly radio show, Pat truly is the “Voice of Quilting”. She has a deep passion for making quilting fun for herself and everyone around her. Pat loves to hang out with quilters on the internet as well as visit you in person. Be inspired to get more done!
Having sewn since she was a child and quilted for over 20 years, Pat eventually looked to her craft as a business. After a few years quilting she started to teach quilt making to others and then turned her skills to pattern designing. She found that she really enjoys designing and seeing how other quilters made her patterns. In 2000 Pat’s designs became so popular that she and her husband Gregg formed a design and publishing company called Pat Sloan & Co. In addition to designing and publishing her work, they now travel around the country teaching and showing her quilts to quilt guilds and quilt shops. Also, Pat has had her designs published in all the national magazines, she has written 31 quilt books and has designed many lines of fabric for Moda Fabrics.
