Springtime Reflections

Spring may just be our absolute favorite time of year. We’ve just survived the long cold Winter… the endless snow storms, the frigid temps, the blustery days and frozen nights. Spring, in all of its muddy, messy glory, comes like a beacon… full of sunshine and chirping birds and hopeful flowers popping through the dirt. It’s a time of renewal and it’s hard to deny the creativity that it inspires.

Jackie Kunkel’s Springtime Reflections embodies all that is good about Spring. Full of ten perfectly bright and sweet spools of Aurifloss, we could just gaze the box for days. The collection was made to coordinate with Jackie’s Feline Fine fabrics for Island Batik and launched at Fall Market in Houston last November.

We just loved seeing how Jackie used the floss to highlight and embellish the patterns found within her fabrics. There’s nothing we love more than a burst of creativity fueled by our absolute favorite cotton thread.

With that said, these delightful little spools of happiness are the perfect stitching companion for any of your Spring projects. We’re looking forward to seeing how you use them to brighten your day!

THE INTERVIEW
How did you first connect with Island Batik?

Actually that is interesting, I first connected with them I think it was 2011.  I made a quilt for Quilt Magazine called Paradise Island.  It was made from all Island Batik fabrics and was featured at Quilt market.  Then I made another for Quilt Magazine that was featured on the cover of the June, 2012 which was also Island Batik.  Fast Forward to 2015, Island Batik came to me and asked me to design a quilt for one of their lines, which I did, then afterwards they asked to meet with me at Market.  That sealed the deal.  They have been fabulous to work with and for… and I hope to continue for more years of collaborative creativity!

What do you love most about working with batik fabrics?
Ah, now that is a trick question!  What is NOT to love about batiks?  The colors, the texture, the timelessness… everything about them is something to love.  They add something special to every project that you make.  Mix them with prints or not… but they are a fabulous fabric to work with.  You can purchase a batik now and 15 years from now, it has the ability to be placed in any project just like you purchased the batik yesterday.

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about working with them?
Lovely Aurifil… I don’t remember the exact date but it had to be at least 6 or more years ago.  I love the colors that are offered, the varying weights and the fact they don’t break.  But my absolute, hands down favorite weight is 50wt.  I love piecing with it and it is my go to for piecing, traditional or paper pieced.  I love color 2600 for piecing.  From my thread collections, I love using them for quilting and embellishment of any project.  They make the project sing!

Can you tell us a bit more about this collection and what it means to you?
This collection is super special because I selected these with my Feline Fine Fabric collection in mind.  The collection of fabric was perfect and lends itself to using embroidery projects.  It does this all while having fun with kitty cats!!!  But most of all you can use this floss collection for any projects that you  have in mind.

Do you have a favorite project or projects made with this collection?
One of the projects that I did and have displayed in my studio is a little pillow I made.  I used my black fabric from my Feline Fine Fabric and simply used the embroidery floss to outline the images made by the design.  It is super fun and a quick way to get a different look without having to draw out an embroidery project. That is my favorite. Then my friend Vicki Hansen of Cranberry Pie Designs created a few patterns that use the floss and my fabrics that turned out super cute!!!

What drew you to working with Aurifloss?
Honestly, I love doing handwork.  Truth be told, I don’t have a ton of time for handwork, but when I do, I love to do embroidery and I have done it since I was a teen.  So whenever, I can, I love to do it!

Do you have any tips for use?
I use a hoop, and usually 3 strands… other than that I just do my thing!
