It feels a little like a bonus round;). We’re so completely taken with the stunning projects that these two makers have created. Check out the tips, the tricks, the tutorials, and more, and start thinking about all the ways you might use OLFA Scissors in partner with Aurifil 12wt.

Hi! I’m Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs, and I am excited to share a quick and easy, raw edge, reverse appliqué pillow that you can make for the upcoming holiday season.

I am paired up with my very good friend Yvonne Fuchs of Quilting Jetgirl to showcase Aurifil’s 12wt cotton thread and OLFA’s scissors. Without talking to each other, we both decided to make reverse appliqué pillows (using different techniques), so please hop over to her blog to see her creation.

I love using Aurifil’s 12wt thread in my machine for quilting; the thick thread gives a strong visual look that is difficult to produce any other way.  Here are my tips for using Aurifil 12wt in your machine:

  • Use 12wt as the top thread and a matching 50wt thread in the bobbin.
  • Use a needle with a larger eye such as a 90/14 or a top stitch needle.
  • Go slowly, whether using your walking foot or free motion foot, and sew slowly.
  • Increase your stitch length (or make larger stitches if doing free motion quilting)

With these tips, you are ready to start!  This tutorial does not include fabric amounts because the amount of fabric needed will depend on your template, pillow size, and pillow enclosure.

Step 1 – Create your template & make your pieced lower layer
I used a snowflake template for my pillow from Microsoft PowerPoint.  PowerPoint contains thousands of free drawings/pictures and I had multiple snowflake illustrations to choose from.  I added the snowflake to my presentation, sized it, then printed and cut it out.

To match my holiday decorations, I wanted a red snowflake.  I used some red print strips, mostly from different Bonnie and Camille for Moda prints, and sewed them into a square that was larger than my template.

Step 2 – Layer the pillow top and trace the template
I layered in order:

  • Backing fabric, right side facing down
  • Batting (I used Warm & White by the Warm Company)
  • Pieced lower layer, right side facing up
  • Top fabric, right side facing up

I pinned all 4 layers together and then traced the shape of the snowflake onto the top fabric, making sure that it was centered.

Step 3 – Stitch around the template and cut out inside
I used my free motion foot and free motion quilted just outside of the traced line.  The thick 12wt thread showed up nicely against the black linen.  Next, I used my OLFA scissors to carefully cut just the top layer almost to the stitching line.  This is raw edge, reverse appliqué so the fabric just inside of the quilting line may fray a bit.

Step 4 – Finish your pillow
You can finish your pillow any way you would like.  I used an envelope backing, but you could also use a regular zipper, invisible zipper, or buttons.

I hope that you enjoy your quick raw edge, reverse appliqué pillow!  My new kitten Piper sure does.
