Welcome to the next monthly Showcase for our Aurifil Artisans! They were tasked with creating a project inspired by Kaffe Fassett and Kantha stitching using Aurifil 12wt thread. Traditional Kantha involves the use of a running stitch across the full width of the quilt. It is a basic hand stitching technique that is perfect for both beginner and expert quilters and produces a highly artistic result.

Claire Haillot– It was the perfect occasion to get started on all the cushions that I want to make for my new living room sofa. How can I not be challenged with combining Kantha stitching with Kaffe Fasset’s beautiful prints? It was a dream come true.
Cassandra Beaver – Decorative straight line large stitch hand quilting in nine colors of 12 wt Aurifil thread adds texture and even more visual interest to the mix of Kaffe Fassett prints comprising this bag. I designed this cross-body bag pattern to be the perfect size to hold a wallet, phone, and bottle of water. The adjustable strap and cork bottom increase comfort and durability.
Wendy Welsh – I made two Open Wide Pouches to showcase my Kantha quilting. I really enjoyed the freedom of Kantha quilting with 12wt Aurifil.
Heather Black – When I looked up Kantha stitching I found out that women in India would use the stitch to sew together multiple layers of old saris to make cushions and garments from. I wasn’t about to make a garment but I was drawn to the idea of sewing layers together and settled on a fabric collage.
Krista Hennebury – I made a small teacozy using a whole cloth kantha stitched FQ (stitched with 12 wt) The sides were fussy cut from the same print in a different colourway.
Daisy Aschehoug – This past month, I’ve had good company with this Aurifil 12wt in Fairy Floss, and a very old quilt top that’s been waiting years to get quilted. The 12 wt was a perfect choice – big enough for visible stitches and small enough to pull easily through my quilt layers!
Cheryl Brickey – I made a Wide Open Pouch (pattern by Noodlehead) out of a Kaffe print with Kantha hand quilting in a variety of 12 wt Aurifil colors. The pouch will be mailed (along with some goodies inside) to my mother for her birthday.
We hope that our artisans have inspired you to try your hand at Kantha stitching! Now more than ever is a wonderful time to slow down and work on a bit of meditative hand stitching. ❤
I have a few colors of 12wt aurifil out right now; trying to decide what color to use for some hand quilting on a table runner. I was thinking I should double it up so it would show better, but these examples look good with a single thread.
The artisans all created interesting and very different projects with their assignments! Beautiful work!
