Meet Aurelia Floss

The world looks a little different these days. Our day to day lives have drastically changed. We’re not free to travel as we’d like and most of us are stuck at home with our daydreams. We pass the time with books, creative endeavors, and work, but perhaps we long for adventure… for something a little bit more. We long for tall buildings, rolling hills, foreign museums, sprawling lakes, and evening strolls along romantically lit cobblestoned streets. While we might not be able to experience these things for ourselves… we may have another way.

Meet Aurelia Floss, Aurifil’s own thread heroine. Aurelia is more than a simple length of thread wound on a wooden spool. She represents Aurifil’s values… our hopes, our dreams, and our unflinching sense of adventure. She is compassionate and kind, bold and inquisitive and has agreed to share some of her epic travel stories with us. She’ll paint pictures of favorite cities and lush landscapes, sharing thoughts and wisdom, letting us live vicariously through her eyes.

Truly, Aurelia strives to bring us all a little closer, the thread that binds our creative community together. Join us in following along with her past adventures, discovering new places, and learn a little more about Aurifil’s incomparable floss along the way.

Today serves as our simple introduction. Going forward, Aurelia takes the stage. She’ll share something new every two weeks, encouraging you both to follow along and to find and share your own stories. What spool best represents you, your thread persona, poised and ready for adventure? Where would your travels take you? We’re eager to share this journey with you and Aurelia and hope you find some inspiration along the way.

Make sure to tune in for every installment — we’ll supplement Aurelia’s stories with some helpful resources, creative tips, and occasional free patterns.

Aurelia…
Tell us a bit about your background.
My story originates in the Mako region of Egypt. My parents — two loving 1kg reels — were born there and moved to Italy for university. I know that it was very exciting for them at the time, and that they’ve never once questioned their decision to move. They eventually moved to Solaro for work, and went through 15 steps to create me and my 230 brothers and sisters. We are made up of the finest Egyptian Cotton, 6 strong Italian strands woven into one, radiating fire and fuchsia.

How would you describe yourself?
I’m fearless and bold… a strong spool who knows her worth. I am confident and live each day to become stronger than the day before, to overcome any hurdles that might cross my path. I care for my friends & family… for all people, really. I am a helper. I was raised to believe that while we are all equals, our true strength comes with embracing our differences and with celebrating diversity in all its forms. I love to travel and learn about new cultures and look forward to each new experience with passion and excitement.

What are three things that you love most in this world and why?
People, making art, and traveling. Ultimately, I just love people. I cherish and admire their capabilities. How they are able to turn the smallest things into an original work of art. I do my best to help people out in this respect… to provide them with the tools needed to work on crafting those creative stories and expressing their joy.

My love for travel stems from a quest to learn about new cultures and explore various methods and style of creating new art while paying respect to art history.

What are your favorite things to do?
Honestly, I’m most happy either when I’m creating a new work of art or when I’m traveling. My favorite creative techniques are cross stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, crochet, and appliqué, but I’m always on the lookout for something new. In regards to travel, I adore discovering new places, exploring new cultures, and bearing witness to all of the glorious art that has been created by others. But really, it’s all about creating our own personal adventures!

What locations are you most excited to share with us?
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to travel around Italy last year. I’d been yearning to learn more about my home country, to visit some new locations, and see the beauty for myself. Sometimes it makes sense to be a tourist in your own backyard! Going forward, I’ll share some of these experiences with you — a wealth of stunning destinations, from cities to mountains, forests to beaches… Italy and far far beyond. I promise you, we’ll have some fun!

As a savvy traveler, what are your must-have items?
A sharp needle (Bohin!), a crisp square of fabric, & a camera to capture anything and everything that inspires me.

Can you give us a sneak peek? Where will you take us first?
Normally, I like to keep my locations a surprise, but in this case, I’d like to give you something to look forward to. We’ll first travel to Milan. It is one of my absolute favorite cities, which is lucky because it’s only about 35 minutes from my home in Solaro. It’s a city that I visit often, so I’ve got so many stories to share… My favorite coffee shop, a go-to after work aperitif, the street with the best evening light, my favorite gallery, and so much more. I can’t wait to give you a peek into the beginning of my journey!

Big thanks to Aurelia for beginning this journey with us… for giving us an avenue to explore and travel, from the comforts of our own homes. We cannot wait to see the world through her eyes!!
