Today we are excited to share the next showcase post for our 2020 – 2021 team of Aurifil Artisans! For September we partnered with our friends at Windham Fabrics to provide a number of our Artisans with the Windham Fabrics Artisan Cotton solids. They were then challenged to create a wholecloth quilt using the fabrics they selected and their choice of Aurifil Threads. ❤

Sue de Vanny – “September Aurifil Artisan challenge done!! ✅ This was fun. 5 of Aurifil beautiful threads. My design done on the iPad through Amazograph then getting it quilted on this. It’s all free motion.”
Steph Skardal – This small whole quilt in Wine Pink was quilted with a randomized grid of domestic machine (forty3) and hand quilting (12wt) in pale yellow. My five year old holds it up proudly for me!
Eliane Bergmann – This month I used Aurifil 12 weight thread in 6 colors to create an organic hand-quilted quilt. I love the movement of the hand quilting and the subtlety of the colors coupled with the fabric.
Audrey Esarey – I used four colors of Aurifil 28wt and 40wt threads to create a plaid whole cloth quilt wall hanging. The base fabric is Windham Artisan Cotton in the Aqua/White combo. I love experimenting with layers of stitching, since it’s always surprising to see how the color of the fabric changes!
Sarah Ruiz – “I couldn’t resist this month’s opportunity to tackle my very first wholecloth quilt! I learned how to create this 8-fold geometric rosette earlier this year in an online course, and enjoyed the challenge of recreating it in textile form. The construction lines are stitched in 50wt #2024 (white) thread, and the final motif is stitched with 12wt #2784 (dark navy). The subtle variation of yellow-green Artisan Cotton fabric added a great element of texture to the overall design. I’m excited to hang the finished quilt in my home!”
Madeline Bonner – “This is my Wholecloth Quilt with a twist! It was a great challenge and an opportunity to try something different. The surface qualities of the Artisan Cotton in Navy-Cyan gives great depth to the quilting. I used 50 weight in 2525 and 2780. The variegated thread is 12 weight and perfect for both machine and hand quilting. The Artisan Cotton is a fantastic weight and catches the light beautifully. I can’t wait to try other colours.”
Amy Ball – “For this Artisan challenge I nearly used free motion quilting but I had a spark of inspiration from a fun art meets maths tasks we did months ago during homeschooling…parabolic curves. In basic terms, a parabolic curve creates a curved shape from the intersections of straight lines. This seemed like a perfect principle to replicate using straight line quilting. I’m a big lover of quilting maths generally so I knew the need for measuring and precision would be fun for me.”
Heather Black – “had such a fun time with this Aurifil artisan wholecloth project featuring Aurifil thread and Windham Artisan Cottons. I was inspired to create a quilted design similar in appearance to dot art. Aurifil 28 wt thread was perfect for adding definition to the stitches which was so important in a wholecloth design.”
Allie McCathren – “I loved how soft and texturally rich the Artisan cotton felt, and I wanted my quilting to highlight that. The wavy lines of the sea kelp felt like they would evoke that smoothness, and the quilted bubbles helped to show depth. I added some leafy seadragons to complete the scene, and I’m very pleased with how the whole piece turned out.”
Laurel Ryan – “Mini plant drawings. Plants that you can’t kill. Plants to hang out with your other plants. I went with three mini wall hangings. Three plants are better then one. 😉 “
Wendy Chow – “The following tutorial modernises wholecloth quilts by exploring the use of different coloured threads to accentuate decorative stitching on a wholecloth quilt, and aims to make quilting on a domestic machine more approachable with step-by-step tutorial on how to create a Six-Pointed Star quilting design.”
Sherry Shish – “My wholecloth table runner was made with forty3 thread on my longarm. I combined several designs to create an overall composition.”
Lisa Hofmann-Maurer – “I absolutely loved this challenge. I initially was going to do a free motion wholecloth quilt because of Karlee Porters class I had just taken. But then I decided to go for something more me, something with a simple modern twist. And I’m in love. I used all 28wt and changed thread colors for every section. I want to dive deeper into this kind of modern wholecloth quilting in the future.”
Erin Kroeker – “For the Whole cloth quilt challenge, I was inspired to recreate on of my quilt patterns using only thread. I additionally challenged myself to try free motion quilting for the first time ever to create this stitched Pine Falls Quilt. I wanted it to look like a doodle, since that’s how most of my quilt designs begin!”
