Welcome to another Aurifil Artisan project showcase! Each month we task our team of Artisans with a new challenge, and each month we are thrilled to share the amazing projects they have created! For March we have partnered with our friends at Paper Pieces to feature a variety of projects created using English Paper Piecing!

Jen Belnap – ” I made these EPP patriotic stars with Land of Liberty by Riley Blake Designs. The great thing about EPP is no y-seams! Aurifil thread 50 wt. is the best to EPP with. I think I’m hooked on EPP now!”
Henrik Müller – “You all know by now, that I am obsessed with EPP. When Aurifil Announced this challenge I was all over it. I finished 2 large EPP projects prior to this challenge and I could have just handed them in but oh no. I had to make a new one. What I ended up choosing was the Tula Nova Quilt and I made this beauty in about 20 days. It was so much fun I could not stop. I have been sewing every free minute I had.”
Madeline Bonner – “This months challenge has been great fun as I love English Paper Piecing. I was able to showcase large scale prints in Liberty Tana Lawn. 80 weight thread was perfect with this weight of fabric. I used 2610 2375 4241 2215. My thanks to Paperpieces for providing the pattern and papers for the project.”
Amanda Carye – “This was my first attempt ever at EPP and it was such a treat to get to dive into a new technique (lots of lessons learned along the way: turns out, I need to work on my gluing skills!). Thank you to fellow Artisan, Laurel Laurel @porcupinesews_threads, for encouraging me to tackle this darling Owl EPP pattern she designed (make sure to check out all her super cool and modern EPP patterns and kits)!”
Allie McCathren – “English paper piecing is wonderful for relaxed sewing. It allows you to sit and sew slowly, and you can add so much detail with your fabric choices. I like to make my stitches as invisible as possible, so I prefer 50wt Aurifil thread, color matching to the fabric.”
Jamie – “This month I went for another small project. Instead of making some quilt blocks with my dresden plates, I decided to make a placemat/something cute to set on the table under a dish. The thread I used was Aurifil Cotton 80wt in a creamy off-white. What I appreciate most about 80wt is twofold: how easy it is to break with my hands (sharp things near me make me nervous) and how invisible it is (so easy to make lil secret stitches). But on the less practical side, I really like the cute wooden spool 🙂 “
Erin Kroeker – “English paper piecing is something I’ve always admired from a distance. I love hand sewing, but I wasn’t sure where to begin. This challenge was a perfect place to start. The LeMoyne Star if far from perfect, but I loved making it! I used 80wt thread (6725) to piece hand dyed fabric into this little star!”
Amista Baker – “This month I’ve been working on a scrappy, hand stitched, jewel toned Pixelated Tablet Cover kit from Paper Pieces EPP. I used Aurifil 50 wt. in shade 2000 to piece together these cute little hexies that will be turned into a tablet cover when finished. I had fun mixing and matching scrappy blue, teal, purple, and orange 2.5″ fabric squares to create this project.”
Kymona Tracey – “Learning something new is such a great way to start the Spring season. I’m new to English Paper Piecing, and now I’m hooked. It was easy, and creating this pillow sham is a perfect way to display my EPP efforts!”
Lucy Brennan – “Clam leaves and Clam point pieces were used to create a panel to embellish a project bag. A fun way to try new epp shapes! Lucy used different Aurifil threads for epp, applique, quilting and hand stitching – all in the one project. In her blog post she has tips and tricks for epp curves, light fabrics on dark backgrounds, neat applique top stitching and those pesky metal bits on zips.”
Jennie Pickett – “For the EPP challenge I made the Rose Star Block using Liberty of London Tana Lawn. I appliquéd it onto linen and turned it into a cushion cover.”
Lauren Wright – “Tilly’s Tea Party is a pretty table runner design that incorporates English paper piecing, embroidery and hand quilting. So there’s lots of opportunities for using your favourite Aurifil thread weights!”
Martha Woollard – “I chose to stitch the Smitten quilt using a range of colours of 80wt Aurifil thread. Each individual block tells part of a story set in Trixie Forest, a place I conjured up using Heather Ross prints and Ruby+Bee solids. These blocks will grow into a story quilt, with a varied cast of characters!”
Lucy Engels – “For this months challenge I have resurrected a past obsession. Quilt Prints, EPP colour studies.”
