We adore industry icon, Pat Sloan. Throughout her impressive career, Pat has written over 30 books, curated Aurifil thread collections, oversees the largest quilting community on Facebook, hosts a daily YouTube show, designed hundreds of quilts, and has created countless fabric collections! Today we are excited to celebrate the arrival of her newest fabric collection for Benartex Fabrics, Bird Song.
A bit of whimsy with a modern twist gives this new collection from Pat Sloan its special charm. Pat’s stylized birds provide a folk art elegance and the coordinates add lots of colorful depth and texture. The focal panel is ready for a few borders (or cut it apart to create even more projects!) Try mixing and matching the multi scale flowers, stripes and textures for a unique and contemporary design. As always, Pat’s collections are created with quilters in mind.

Hey y’all! I’m Hilary of @byhilaryjordan and I am excited to be here today to share the project I created with Pat’s beautiful new Bird Song fabric collection. If you ask anyone who knows me what my favorite color is, then they will without hesitation say PINK! Of course, this means I was drawn to the warm colorways throughout Bird Song.
It was difficult to narrow down my fabric choice, let’s be honest I wanted yardage of everything, but ultimately I selected the Wildflowers Field print in Rose and the Bird Seeds print in Rose. I used these two fabrics to make the coziest set of Carolyn Pajamas, pattern by Closet Core Patterns.
A winning combination of Aurifil thread weights for garment sewing success is to use Aurifil Forty3 cotton on top with Aurifil 40wt/2 ply cotton in the bobbin. The color I used for this project is color 2410 Pale Pink.

This project was the very first time I made piping, I knew I wanted it to match perfectly. To my surprise, piping is way easier to make than expected and it came together quickly. The Bird Seeds print is a perfect accent fabric, and each time I look at these pajamas I see a new motif in the Wildflowers Field print. I especially love the little hearts sprinkled throughout the foliage and butterflies. 🦋
If you’ve never tackled garment sewing before, I highly suggest making something with quilting cotton. I’ve been garment sewing for 20 years and some of my very first garments were made with quilting cotton, and I continue to use it all the time. It’s a gorgeous fabric for soft & comfortable items, plus it’s a fabulous fabric choice for garment sewing beginners. Just go slow and enjoy the process. ❤
Oh and definitely pre-wash your fabric. I know to pre-wash or not to pre-wash is a divisive topic in the quilty world, but it’s a must for garment sewing. No one wants to make a garment, only to have it shrink after washing. Thankfully, the quality of the Benartex quilting cotton fabric is amazing. It washed up like a dream, with not a single color bleed in sight, it is super soft, and has only gotten softer with each washing.

Pat Sloan is a designer, author, and lecturer with a deep passion for making quilting fun for herself and everyone around her. Ok, those jammies do look real cozy and great job on the piping!! I haven’t sewn clothing in decades but have made plans to return to it soooo many times (and we won’t talk about fabric for it that has been purchased in between quilt project shopping). While I have seen many great outfits made with quilting cottons, I never would have thought to sew them with cotton thread — I probably would have gone back to the polys like I used back in the day. Pre-washing is a good idea (and I definitely will remember that one for the flannel pajamas I’ve had fabric to make them with since forever). Thanks for two really good tips for whenever I do get back on the garment sewing horse!

Thank you for the advice on making clothes from quilting cotton. I have also been told not to use quilting cotton for garments. I think I will get an easy pattern and give it a try.

Your pjs are adorable! I love this fabric line, too. Thanks for the hint about pre-washing quilting cottons for sewing garments. I have used my quilting cottons for napkins which are so very soft. Most of them never need ironing.
