“Each mountain in the Dolomites is like a piece of art.”

– Reinhold Messner

The Dolomites (or Dolomite Mountains) are a mountain range, located in NorthEastern Italy, spanning over 600 square miles of breathtakingly lush landscape. The area is a favorite Summer destination for both Italians and foreign tourists alike as it offers the perfect escape to the city heat.

Our particular journey brings us to a local Rifugio, a simple and rustic mountain hut that partners the opportunity to experience the rugged magic of mountain life with the access to mouthwatering local culinary delights. For the curious adventurer, it’s the perfect setting. We depart early in the morning, before daylight breaks, to catch the sunrise. We hike up through meadows and mountains to reach Tret Alpine Lake, an artificial water reservoir and one of the area’s best kept secrets.  It’s breathtaking… as the sunlight slowly washes over the mountains, the colors change from a muted green to a vibrant emerald, illuminating the lake so that it almost appears to be sparkling. We take a quick dip, the perfect start to what will surely be a perfect day.

After a quick rest, we zip over to Trentino to hire a kayak on Santa Giustina Lake. Accompanied by a guide, we learn all about the region, our boats gliding through pristine waters, surrounded by meadows and vineyards. We’re challenged to paddle through a series of canyons, made possible thanks to the expertise of our guide and are rewarded with some of the most amazing views.

Our day ends with a glass of Trento Doc, a sparkling wine produced exclusively in Trentino. We sip and laugh and delight in the views of the sprawling landscape before us.

FUN FACTS

  • Because of their outstanding universal value, the Dolomites were designated a protected UNESCO World Heritage site. The Dolomites are made of dolomitic limestone, a rare material that gives the mountains their signature spires, sheer cliff faces, and crags. The unique composition of the Dolomites is tremendously valuable to geologists.
  • They Were Once Underwater! As amazing as it is to think about, this massive mountain range was once deep under the waves. There is an abundance of evidence that proves that the fossils and formations found in the Dolomites originated under the sea.

Our Dolomite set features 3 shades of 50wt thread in 2908, 1147, & 2890. They coordinate perfectly with the Circa Celadon, Pesto, & Dill Bella Solids by Moda Fabrics shown above. For a bit of creative inspiration, make sure to grab the Italian Color Builders EPP Pattern (shown above) by Aurifil’s own Kate Brennan and the Dolomites block (shown below) by Carole Lyles Shaw via the buttons below.

As a reminder, over the next few weeks, every purchase at Shop Aurifil containing one or more Color Builder collections will be entered for a chance to win a prize package valued over $550!
