It started off with the Rustic Chic collection (by Aaronica Cole) and grew from there. I found using the collection as a beginning to a really thoughtful challenge. It’s incredible, really, how colours just grow upon one another and what you end up with. A result of painting and stitching with no thought for the end, just exploration.

This was my first time hand quilting and I loved it! This wall hanging was inspired by Rebekah Johnston’s (@rebekah_handmade) workshop “Found Shapes Patchwork” from Making Zen Online Retreat. I used the collection Rustic Chic by Aaronica B Cole from The Needle and the Belle. What a cool collection! The colors went perfectly with my art quilt!

For my January Artisan Challenge, I used the beautiful Sarah Maxwell ‘At Day’s End’ 12wt thread collection from my Aurifil welcome pack. It was perfect for hand-quilting the thread pouch and table runner I’m making for my upcoming workshop at Pour L’Amour du Fil in France! I can’t wait to share my love of these techniques and these beautiful threads with my students.

I’m completely smitten with the Tumbling Blocks canvas from the soon-to-be-released Ooh Lucky Lucky collection by Ruby Star Society. The Pembina Backpack, designed by the talented Canadian designer @theblanketstatement, is the ideal pattern to showcase all the beautiful pinks and rich caramel tones of this fabric. It was the perfect pairing with the collection of designer threads I received in my Aurifil Artisan box. The thread collection, called Rustic Chic by Aaronica B. Cole, is filled with cosy Fall hues that harmonize beautifully with the fabric’s colours, creating the most delightful combination.

I created six folios (8 ¾” × 11 ½” each) as an homage to The Book of Kells. Using my longarm, I stitched the lines onto each sheet of loose-leaf fabric and initially wrapped the edges with a blanket stitch. To draft each page and ensure the right spacing of letters, I used the 50wt thread from The Wellness Collection by Sarah Ashford. I then supplemented the collection with Black in 12wt for each letter. The 12wt threads from the collection helped me fill in the block capital letters, complete the rest of the text, and bring my interpretation of a full-page illustration to life. I documented the process for each letter and have made a PDF of my steps available in my blog post.

The beautiful Rustic Chic collection was perfect for my Gathering bag. Using a few different colors to quilt a project gives an interesting and fun addition. I could have used many combination as this thread collection is also very versatile with all the variegated threads included.

The January Aurifil Artisan challenge was about using one of their gorgeous collections, and you all might be getting tired of me talking about this by now, but I am still obsessed with machine quilting with the 8wt Evolve Thread Collection by Suzy Quilts. I used 4 of the colors from the collection on this quilted sherpa scarf project for the January issue of the Cutting Table, and I couldn’t be happier with how well these matched Suzy’s AGF Signature Pure Solids! I alternated wavy, organic quilting with more geometric lines for a modern effect, and I’m obsessed with how this came out! Make sure to check out my blog link for more info on how to use this chunky thread through your machine!

I was thrilled to receive the We Sew Too Collection in my welcome box and was so excited to use it for a challenge. I love a rainbow and picked some fabrics to match the threads in the box to make one of my favourite pouches. The different thread weights added fun texture to the quilting, too.

Stitching a little magic, one thread at a time… This small but meaningful project came together with the gorgeous Aurifil 12wt threads from The Wellness Collection by Sarah Ashford. The rich colors, the beautiful sheen, and the joy of slow stitching made this a true moment of creative self-care. Because wellness isn’t just about rest—it’s also about making time for the things that bring you joy. And for me, that’s hand-stitching something special.

My first artwork this year and I think I‘m off to a great start with this chill bird. He is part of my January Challenge as an Aurifil Artisan, where I was given the wonderful thread collection ‘Rustic Chic’. As soon as I opened it, the vision of a robin appeared. I always associate thread colours with animals, and these here literally screamed ‘robin’! A few secs later, the Red Plum spool begged to be included as a bubble gum. I painted the robin first on a cotton mix fabric, using my Inktense pencils and then used the available thread colours to stitch out fragments of the feathers. I thought about adding extra tones of yellow and orange, but I wanted to stay true to the challenge.

My goal for 2025 is to learn free-motion quilting. This cheater print was the perfect way to practice, and using Aurifil 12wt from The Wellness Collection added a ton of texture and color to my project. The collection included so many vibrant colors that I was able to pull several to match the print.

As part of my Artisan welcome pack, I received The Wellness Collection, curated by Sarah Ashford. This box was to be used as our January Artisan challenge, I knew I would use the 12wt for some hand quilting. Eventually, I was inspired by the rainbow of colours in the Tula Pink Stargazer print, which I love as it reminds me of mini cathedral windows and disco lights. I hand-quilted a rainbow of the 12wt threads on a black Oakshott fabric, changing the colours at each intersection to emulate the changing of disco lights. I used my Lincoln Cathedral Pattern to showcase the fabric and the threads. The perfect combination of stitching with joyous colour whilst listening to music to lift the January blues!

I’ve always been in awe of the incredible quilts created by the talented Aurifil Artisans—pure magic in every stitch! That’s why, for this month’s challenge, I wanted to blend the beauty of patchwork with the charm of tiny crochet. The Lighthearted thread set by Camille Roskelley (50wt) was an easy choice—it’s filled with all my favorite colors, and I knew it would be perfect for this tiny project.

As a huge fan of Liberty and prints, when I saw the news of the Patchwork Collective Project – a collaborative patchwork artwork to celebrate 150 years of Liberty – I just knew I wanted to join in. I didn’t want to let the minor detail that I’ve not done patchwork before stop me from making something special, so I turned to what I could do and decided to embroider the patchwork pieces.

Using the Rustic Chic Collection I had been sent by Aurifil as the starting point to help me choose the colour palette and prints I wanted to make, I set to work replicating some of my favourite Liberty designs. I thought I would like Wiltshire the most, but Betsy has really stolen my heart! I hand stitched the pieces together and then appliquéd to a piece of Wiltshire quilting fabric using beautiful 80wt – my hand stitching is far from perfect, but luckily the thread is so fine, you can barely see it! I’m so pleased with the outcome, and am keeping my fingers crossed that it makes it to the final quilt

Excited to share my latest project —a free scrappy heart block for subscribers that I turned into a cozy quilted vest! I used a mix of Aurifil 50wt and 8wt threads to bring texture and detail to life, pairing hand-dyed linen with some of my favorite prints. This is a piece straight from the heart, blending creativity, texture, and a love for handmade!

Keep on stitching the rainbow! Total embroidery improv with this magnificent thread palette curated by #sarahashfordstudio, 12wt in pure cotton, distributed by Aurifil Thread, of course. It became a nice needlebook, don’t you think?

This month, Artisans were challenged to dive into the vibrant world of Aurifil threads by showcasing an Aurifil collection box. I immediately reached for the Untamed Collection as it hits all of my “must haves” in a thread collection! The curated collection is SPECIFICALLY made to match a fabric collection that makes me swoon – check and check! Untamed by Tula Pink has me staying warm, inspired, and just point blank HAPPY to have the opportunity to create.

This 50wt 12-spool collection is the PERFECT combination of warm and cool – it hits the brightest spots of neon pink, orange, and yellows-lime to the super-rich and saturated deepest of purples and a harmonious rainbow in between. 50wt is my go-to choice for machine and hand work, and I used both techniques from one box of thread in these projects. I love a collection of threads that challenge me to texturize all of the details in a fabric I love – it’s the cherry on top! This box is an outstanding compliment with some less saturated neutrals for piecing, construction, and quilting.

These bags are great for travelling and teaching this year and provide a close-up opportunity to inspire how it all comes together in the end. The perfect ingredients for joyful, beautiful, and functional projects. Thank you, Aurifil, for another great challenge to get creative!

What started as a fun way for me to use up my fabric scraps turned into putting my spin on one of my favorite quilting necessities: the big blue bag from IKEA! If you know me in real life, you know that I own several and that they get used and abused. I carry many quilts at once and even use them to transport my Juki around! The thing that I don’t love, however, is the sound of crinkling. I’m someone who gets overstimulated pretty easily, and having a giant bag added to the sound cap around me is something that can probably be avoided, so I made my very own franken-designed version using my favorite material: fabric!

The Wellness Collection by Sarah Ashford is a vibrant curation of 12wt thread, perfect for machine-free-motion embroidery. It added the sweetest details to my Zakka Workshop pouch, highlighting all the sweet details of this Sarah Jane fabric. I am always amazed at the texture 12wt adds to any project, and The Wellness Collection is the perfect mix of warm and cool tones.

For the January Aurifil ‘Collections’ challenge, I used these gorgeous spring colours curated by Jill Finley. I decided to make my crochet hooks a little zip pouch. I used this FPP block from ‘Happy Sew Lucky’ as the detail on the pouch. I love the way these colours compliment the fabrics so beautifully.
