Thread Matters: Aurifil Thread Basics, Part I

Hello, friends! I’m Karen L. Miller, Master Educator for Aurifil, and I’m delighted to share a bit of my passion for this incredible thread with you. Whether you’re an experienced maker or just discovering Aurifil for the first time, I hope to provide valuable insight into what makes it so special.

In this post, I’ll take you on a brief journey through Aurifil’s history, answer some of the most frequently asked questions, and share essential tips to help you make the most of your thread. From fiber content to weight selection and everything in between, my goal is to ensure you feel confident and inspired every time you thread your needle. So, let’s dive in!

A Brief History of Aurifil

Aurifil, based in Italy, was founded in 1983 by Angelo Gregotti and friend Adolfo Veronelli with one goal in mind: excellence in cotton threads.

This dynamic duo were determined to create the highest-quality threads using extra-long staple Egyptian cotton, the finest dyes, and the most sophisticated machinery available. After extensive research and in collaboration with top industry innovators, Aurifil developed a 15-step process to produce threads with exceptional strength, smoothness, sheen, and minimal lint.

While many associate Aurifil with quilting and crafting, it was originally created for Studio Auriga, its parent company, specializing in industrial embroidery machinery, software, and later, threads.

The first products from Aurifil were their 40wt and 28wt 2-ply threads, which are still in use today by Studio Auriga in the fashion, interior design, and automotive detailing industries.

In 1995, Aurifil began re-imagining its industrial embroidery threads for the creative community. By 2000, Aurifil was introduced to the sewing and crafting world—bringing a new level of quality and innovation.

Now that we’ve explored a brief history of Aurifil, let’s dive into some essentials and work through answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

Q: What Makes Aurifil 50wt 2-Ply Thread a Quilter’s Favorite?

A: With most machine piecing threads on the market being 3-ply, the introduction of Aurifil’s 50wt 2-ply thread on the iconic orange spool revolutionized the quilting community. Quilters found that the 2-ply thread produced flatter seams and more accurate piecing.

Appliqué enthusiasts loved how the thread produced nearly invisible stitches, whether by hand or machine. Plus, when wound on the bobbin, 50wt 2-ply fills a tremendous amount of bobbins, each seeming to last forever.

Did You Know:

Thread weights are measured at a single strand. The more strands or “ply” twisted together, the thicker the thread. Understanding the weight and ply is crucial to understanding the overall diameter of the product.

Helpful Hint:

When switching from a 3-ply to a 2-ply thread of the same weight, you may need to lower the top tension on your sewing machine.   Many machines are initially tuned to work with 3-ply 50wt threads, when deviating from that thickness a lower top tension helps achieve optimal machine and thread performance.

Q: Why are Aurifil spools such a great value?

A: Because the 50wt 2-ply thread is thinner than the 3-ply 50wt threads, you’ll find more thread per spool. A large spool of Aurifil 50wt delivers 1,422 yards, compared to just 500 to 600 yards from other 3-ply 50wt threads. This means more value for your money—more yards per spool, and less lint!

Did you know:

When broken down, the cost of Aurifil 50wt thread is less than one cent per yard, while comparable 3-ply 50wt threads come in at around 1.5 cents per yard.

Q: Where do I find the start of the thread on a new spool?

A: When working with large spools of Aurifil, the bottom flange (or spool cap) is removable. Carefully remove the flange to reveal the start of the thread underneath. It’s also a great place to tuck the thread away for travel or storage.

Helpful Hint:

When removing the flange, be sure to grasp onto the plastic only, do not pull the thread on the bottom of the spool. If the flange is stubborn, try wiggling it back and forth, or gently twist to remove.

Helpful Hint:

When replacing the flange, leave a bit of air between the bottom of the thread and the flange to prevent undue pressure on the bottom layers of thread.

Q: How should my spool be placed on my machine for best results?

A: All sizes and weights of Aurifil cotton threads are cross-wound. Notice the ‘X’-shaped pattern created by the layers of thread on the spool. This criss-cross winding allows the thread to unwind smoothly and efficiently when drawn from the top of the spool, rather than from the side.

With this in mind, regardless of whether your machine has a vertical or horizontal spool pin, it’s recommended to draw the thread over the top of the spool.

For machines with horizontal spool pins, secure the thread with the smallest spool cap available and draw the thread to the left to the first machine thread guide.

For machines with vertical pins, if there is no thread guide directly above the vertical pin, consider using an external thread stand or placing the thread in a heavy glass or mug behind the machine. This option works perfectly for spools and cones.

Important:

If you’re experiencing shredding, breaking or skipped stitches, consider how the spool is positioned on the machine.

Fun Facts about Aurifil

THREAD WEIGHTS:

— Aurifil offers 6 different 2-ply cotton thread weights, a wool/acrylic blend 12wt 2-ply, a 6-strand divisible cotton floss, a 40wt/3-ply cotton thread, and a nylon monofilament option.

Top: Forty3 & Monofilament | Bottom L to R: 8wt, 12wt, 28wt, 40wt, 50wt, 80wt, 12wt Wool, Floss

— Aurifil thread spools are color-coded for easy weight identification.
— The lower the thread weight, the thicker the thread.
— Thread thickness increases as additional ply are added. For example, 40wt 3-ply is thicker than 40wt 2-ply.
— Heavier weight threads require a larger-eyed needle.

THREAD REFERENCE CARD:

My all-time favorite thread guide is the Thread Reference Card.

This two page printable outlines common techniques to use with each weight of thread, machine and hand needle suggestions alongside bobbin weight recommendations.  It will be your go-to resource for all Aurifil thread weights. Download via the button below!

COLOR:

— For many of their threads, Aurifil offers 270 colors making it easy to match colors with your creative projects.
— 12wt, 28wt, 40wt, & 50wt are available in all 270 colors. 8wt & 12wt wool are each available in 45 colors. 80wt is available in 88 colors. Forty3 is available in 74 colors. Monofilament comes in clear & smoke.

— For details on all cotton weights and colors, Aurifil’s Swatch Book is a wonderful reference. Snag the full version, complete with actual thread wrapped, removable cards OR the digital version via the buttons below.

THE AURIFIL LABEL:

The labels found on Aurifil’s spools are a bevy of useful information. Let’s examine a label and break it down:

MT 1300 = Total meters of thread on the spool
— GR 30 = Total weight of thread on the spool
— NE = Number English
— 50/2 = 50wt 2-ply
— 100% COTTONE MAKO refers to the type of cotton used / the region in which is was sourced.
— 1148 = the color number (in this case, 1148 = Light Jade)
— 1HW = the dye lot for this spool of thread

    1. I made 7 quilts this last Christmas for my grandchildren and use Aurifil thread consistently. This Christmas (2025) I am in the process of making 9 quilts for the Great-grandchildren! And of course Auifil is on my machine <3

      1. Try using 80 wt. Aurifil thread or use a thread conditioner such as Sew Fine Thread gloss. Both work beautifully for me.

      2. Hi! I always use a thread conditioner when hand sewing my binding and since I have started using the conditioner, I no longer have the tangling problem. I only use Aurifil thread too.

    2. I always use Aurifil thread for my piecing and quilting. I use the 40 wt when quilting smaller projects such as place mats, table toppers and table runners. It never lets me down!

    3. I recently started using Aurifil thread, and these tips are so helpful! I now know to loosen the end cap. 😊

    4. I recently created a machine embroidered sampler using 6 different weights of Aurifil thread to show students that not only is Aurifil thread wonderful to use in machine embroidery projects (contrary to many beliefs), but the thread weight plays a large part in the resulting look of the project. The results were beautiful and wowed the students.

  1. I love aurifil thread and use many weights. Right now I am making a scrappy quilt using my favorite 50 wt thread 2600. I do switch it up often but this quilt uses low volume whites as the light and this thread is perfect. On saturday I am attending an embroiderers guild event where I will have fun with my 12 wt stash of thread.

  2. I always use Aurifil threads. My recent polar bear quilt, made using Aurifil threads recently won a bronze medal at the Scottish Quilting Show. So thrilled 😄.

  3. I enrolled in the thread labs 2.0 this past year and truly enjoyed the experience. Using various weights on the projects increased my knowledge of aurifil threads. Love them.

  4. I love the 80wt for hand applique slowly growing my collection and its addictive – the more colours, the more applique I wsnt to do 🤩. And the varigated thread is stunning for machine applique so you dont need to keep changing spools, but am yet to try a mono or invisible thread – my local quilt shops dont stock them. Happy Days ❤️

  5. I use Aurifil Dove Grey 2600 for most of my piecing. It blend with most colors. I do switch to a darker thread when piecing dark fabric. It is less linty than other cotton threads.

  6. Hi! I have used Aurifil 50 wt mako thread for piecing my quilts. But I’m waiting on an order of 28 wt for hand quilting my husband’s modern blue to green ombre log cabin quilt (including iris, grey violet, and copper). Plus I have the It Takes a Village thread set, which I am going to use shortly.

Regarding the floss, do you have a guide on how to use it? Any tips for embroidery stitches? I’ve never embroidered before but I’m using it to decorate the corresponding felt panel project. Thank you!

  7. I did not know there were more weights than 50, which I use for piecing . I recently ordered a set of 12 weight for my hand embroidery and now I want more colors. Can’t find it in the stores though, only online. Maybe that’s why I didn’t know it existed.

  8. I love Aurifil to use in different sizes for embroidery and quilting. I started to make the Flower quilt of Aurifil with my own pictures to transfer in embroidery files. I think about to combinate it with crazy quilting. The information was very interesting to read and I didn’t know it’s better for the thread to loosen the flunge. Thank you!

  9. I love Aurifil threads! I have had a spool of color 2026 for awhile now as I usually use a lighter white for piecing, but it was just what I needed for my current project. It’s a pieced flower arrangement in a bowl, and it’s like doing a puzzle! And everything is coming together nicely thanks to the Aurifil.

  10. My 2025 stitching-just-for-fun project is a small book of variations on the Chain Stitch for hand embroidery. I’ve been using my 12 wt Foundations collection to showcase the fun looks this stitch can have. From hearts and flowers to a monogram and a little bird, these threads have been a delight to work with. My hands just itch to grab my needle at the end of a day for an hour of relaxation and joy.

  11. When I first began EPP I struggled to keep my stitches invisible (as I like them).
I tried different threads and then discovered Aurifil 50w through Tula Pink.
The combination of colour range, thinner, smoother thread allowed my stitches become invisible!
The bonus is I can use the same thread in my Bernina sewing machine with excellent results making my collection of many colours more economical and less lint build up in my machine.

  12. I love Aurifil for quilting. I tried a different brand when I first started quilting and the thread constantly broke. Once I switched, I haven’t had any more issues.

  13. I love that Aurifil 50wt. 2 ply thread is a great multi-tasking thread. I use it for piecing, topstitching, quilting, bag and clothing stitching and in my bobbins no matter what weight top thread I use. I love the “sew” many colors, various shades and variegated threads.

  14. Loved this blog, I noticed it was part one, looking forward to learning more. Where is the six ply thread sold currently? I’ve not seen it in stores near me and I like to do some hand embroidery and would like to try your thread sometime.

  15. I love Aurifil thread. I have a suggestion for Aurifil – I would love it if your little plastic boxes that hold threads were long enough to hold a bobbin in the same slot. That is always my challenge – keeping the bobbin with the matching thread!!!

    1. Agreed! What a great idea! I am always trying to think up new ways to keep my bobbins with my spools. I have tried all sorts of things, but given where my threads are stored, the bobbin on top does not work! I hope they consider YOUR idea!

  16. Aurfil threads is by far the best for all projects, especially for quilting. They far exceed the quality of other threads. I love the Aurfil website and seeing all the talented projects that are done. Thank you!

  17. The last comment on March 28, 2025 at 9:44 pm was from me Linda Weiss- lindaw4181@gmail.com yet it has posted under paradiseunabasheda7b6258cbb which is not me. So I’m puzzled. I hope this can be corrected. Thank you- Linda

  18. I am obsessed with Aurifil thread! One of my favourite colours to use is light leaf green #1147…I’m amazed at how many projects I make where that colour works so well. I’m off to retreat with 10 other ladies in May and have made everyone a bag using these beautiful threads.

  19. I love Aurifil 50 wt. thread for piecing and heavier weight 40 and 28 for raw edge appliqué. The low lint property of this thread makes keeping my sewing machine easier to keep lint-free (I’m reminded of this on the occasions I use other brands). I’ve not used Aurifil for embroidery, and can’t wait to try it for my quilt labels. Thank you for your great product.

  20. I am in love with the Aurifil 50 weight for piecing. It gives me much flatter seams and more accurate ones as well. I can’t believe it took me so long to learn about this thread.

  21. I have many colors of Aurifil that I piece with on my Featherweight. My favorite colors are 2600 Dove and 2310 Light Sand.

  22. I have tried all sizes of the thread. Size 28 for topstitching, Size 12 for hand stitching and Size 50 for piecing.

  23. Totally love all my Aurifil threads. I really enjoy playing with the decorative stitches on my machine with different colors and a variety of variegated threads. When doing my binding on my quilts I machine sew using decorative stitches turns out beautifully. Thank you!!

  24. I use Aurifil 50 wt in color 2021 to piece the majority of my quilts. I use one of your greys for piecing dark fabrics. Thank you for the tips on machine threading. I didn’t know you could remove the spool cap.

  25. Hi,
I’m looking at in-the-hoop quilting/embroidery. The 40 wt. thread I’m currently using is thin, and coverage is lacking. How would the 50 weight Aurifil perform in this situation?

  26. I’m going to bookmark this. I never know when to adjust tension until after I’ve seen. Me and my seam ripper are BFFs.

  27. I’ve recently switched over the past year to Aurifil for my machine embroidery and quilting projects. Love these threads and am just building my colour collection.

  28. I really enjoyed this post about Aurifil thread. When I first started quilting I thought Aurifil thread was too expensive but it really is not. If you calculate how much is on a spool with cost and amount of thread on spools of other brands it ends up in some cases being less expensive. The way it works in my machine is so much better than any other brand I have tried. My recent project was a baby quilt for a niece and I did free motion quilting on my domestic machine using 50 wt thread. I have always found fmq to be so easy with Aurifil thread and won’t use anything else.

  29. I use Aurifil 50 weight for all my piecing. I recently got some 12 weight that I’ve been using to crochet spool pin doilies for my Featherweight machine.

  30. I love Aurifil 50 wt and use it for all of my piecing and hand appliqué. If you ever have the chance to have classes with Karen, she’s great! Enjoyed learning from her when she came to my guild.

  31. What a very informative and interesting article. I bought some Aurifil thread at a recent exhibition. But as yet not used. After reading this I am eager to get started. Thank you

  32. Enjoyed the Auribuzz -signed up to receive.
Like the variegated threads -makes for a nice seam finish

  33. Thank you for all this info. I learned so much!! Aurifil has been my favorite for many years for the quality and education from every sewist that so generously shares on this site!!

  34. This includes great information that I didn’t know! Thank you for the hints and tips. I’m especially surprised at the variety of weights available.

  35. I discovered autofill thread several years ago. It is the only thread I use in my sewing machine and hand work. This was great information and I learned a lot. Thank you.

  36. I love using Aurifil Dove 2600 a lot on my projects…I have several different colors threads to use for quilting on small projects like mini projects or something else

  37. Really great blog post! I use Aurifil all the time and learned something new after reading this. Thanks for the information and giveaway opportunity.

  38. Love all the color options! Which needle size is best for using a 12wt thread to machine quilt? I want my quilting to stand out!❤️

  39. I started using Aurifil exclusively several years ago because I felt it was superior to other threads I have used in the past. After reading this blog, now I understand why! I love pulling out one of your thread boxes and choosing one of those beautiful colors. While I mostly use 50 wt for piecing my quilts (either by hand or machine), I love quilting with the 40 wt and have recently started using the 12 wt for some hand embroidery which is also great. Thanks to Aurifil for all the great threads, and to Karen for sharing your knowledge.

  40. I use a neutral cone of Aurafil 50 wt thread for all of my piecing. I go through about a cone of thread a year. Every once in a while I will have askipped stich and I don’t understand why this happens. Do you have any suggestions?

  41. The quality and color choices of Aurifil thread is unmatched! I recently took a course with Karen of Redbird Quilting Company and she shared so many tips and tricks!

  42. I am new a new quilter, my guild suggested I switch to Aurifil thread. I have and absolutely love it.

  43. This was a very good article. I will share it with my quilt group. I have found that piecing with the finer threads is so much easier to keep accuracy. I like to do miniature piecing and Aurifil is excellent for that.

  44. I am currently working on an Adirondack theme baby quilt. I used Aurifil thread to appliqué around some moose and bears and trees.

  45. I learned to quilt with Aurifil thread. I can’t imagine using anything else. You mentioned Aurifil makes machine embroidery thread in Europe. Is it available in the US?

    1. Hi, Linda — Actually Yes!! Aurifil Italy (Studio Auriga) uses the same cotton threads that are available to quilters and crafters (they’re just packaged differently for the industrial side of the house). So, grab a spool of Aurifil 40wt on the green spool and give it a try for your machine embroidery. When transitioning from poly threat to 100% cotton thread you may need to slow your stitch speed down but I think you’ll love the look of Aurifil cotton thread for embroidery. Check out this Thread Matters post by Kate Toney — there are some great tips in there for Machine Embroidery using different weights of Aurifil. https://auribuzz.com/2022/05/13/thread-matters-2022-machine-embroidery-with-aurifil-thread/

  46. I did a foolish thing…. because most of my quilts are donated, I decided to try different threads. This was NOT a good idea! The frustration of it not working the same and the massive amount of lint soured me. For my own machines sake if for no other reason, I have decided to stay with Aurifil. I use dove or neutral for color and I am investing in the cones primarily. I haven’t tried the embroidery thread yet, but if I do, I will probably be in big trouble, lol! One of these days I will manage to find a way to keep all of my threads in the same place. One room is clearly NOT enough!

  47. I began to switch to Aurifil several years ago after attending a demonstration. Now, I have an assortment of 50 weight. Dove 2600 is SO versatile! Aurifil is kind to my machine! My latest large project was a quilt for my daughter-in-law’s 50th birthday. Next up, one for my daughter’s 60th birthday. Thanks for offering this giveaway.

  48. Hi, almost all my projects are made with Aurifil thread on my Bernina’s. My tip is to buy every color available! You can never have too many, smiles.

  49. I have used Aurifil for years, but I just learned that the bottom cap was removable. Thanks for the info.

  50. I used to use any thread I happened to find. Now I use Aurifil because there’s no lint and I love that I can find spools with enough thread to last the whole project.

  51. Thanks for the information on which way to put the spool on the machine. I didn’t realize it made a difference. I love using Aurifil for quilting. It seems yo just sink in to the quilt and is so strong!

  52. I have built up quite a collection of Aurifil thread colors. I made a fall table runner and had so much fun using the different colors to accentuate the veins in the fall colored leaves.

  53. Love Aurifil for all sewing, it’s so dependable and I appreciate the information about having a spool in the right place especially for my Featherweight!

  54. Wow! Who knew that there was so much technology behind thread. Definite going to give Aurifil a try. Great tips and information. I love reading your posts.

  55. I have always used Aurifil thread. It is the best thread. I recommend it to anyone who sews or quilts.

  56. I have just acquired a new long arm and guess what my thread of choice is? Of course it’s Aurifil !! So happy to have a dependable thread to work with on my new machine. I have quilted about 6 quilts on my new machine so far and all with your wonderful thread. And of course they turned out great!

  57. My sewing machine loves Aurifil thread. I use it for all my special give away quilts for family and friends. It pieces nicely and I like how it quilts. Karen was great teacher for our guild.

  58. I see the instructions on how to find the thread end on a large spool of Aurifil but how can I find the end on a new small spool of Aurifil?

    1. Hi, Mary — great question! On the small spools, look near the flanges on either end. The thread is generally tucked near one flange of the other. If you can’t find it there, I suggest using a straight pin, look for the outer most wrapping of thread, place the pin behind one outer most thread and spin the pin round and round, gently pulling away, until the end falls away from the spool. I hope this helps!

  59. I use Aurfil thread on all my sewing projects. Right now I’m using Aurfil threads for a crosstitch project.

  60. Tried the orange spool Aurifil for hand piecing, applique. It tends to knot easily, guess I’ll try it on my sewing machine instead.

  61. Aurifil is my go-to thread. The heavier weight 30 is great for machine quilting while the 80 weight is perfect for needle-turn applique.

  62. I love my Aurifil threads! I am just finishing up on some braided mug rugs and found the perfect color for each in my little stash of Aurifil spools. Such a happy way to spend time, looking for the perfect color to finish each gift.

  63. I have never used Aurifil thread but would sure like to try it. Would it be good for machine quilting?

    1. Hi, Peggy — Yes, Yes and More YES!!! Nearly all weights of Aurifil are good for machine quilting — that is exactly why I fell in love with Aurifil. Regardless of the machine you’re using, you can do beautiful things with Aurifil. Take a peek at some of the projects outlined in this blog post from years ago. Please let us know if you have further questions. Thank you. https://auribuzz.com/2017/10/21/the-subtle-sampler/

  64. Love the thread especially the 50 2 ply in the bobbin, and the class I took online with Karen. I would love to have the different weights to play with. And where do I get the spool holder form the featherweight shown in this article? I need that! Hope this is where I enter the contest!

    1. Thanks so much for the feedback, Myra. You know I love to share my passion for quilting and thread with everyone — always my pleasure. The Vertical to Horizontal Spool holder on my featherweight, “He Who Has Yet to be Named”, was purchased from the Featherweight Shop. I may have some on my website as well. Also, do check with your local shop as they may carry them as well. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

  65. I have a spool of bright green thread (I don’t know the exact color name) but I’ve used it on most of my quilts! It’s a happy color and I love it!

  66. I think sampler boxes are a great idea to try each weight in thread. I would love to see more projects using the sampler box to get gather some creative ideas on how to use each weight thread. Thanks Aurifil!!

  67. Love Aurifil! I make bags from vintage embroidered linen. Very heavily quilted to emphasize the motifs with lots of feathers. Love how Aurifil blends into the linen so you get all the lovely details. The quilted motif shapes just POP!

  68. Love Aurifil thread! The multiple weights and seemingly endless colors cover ALL my projects!

  69. I use Aurifil Thread on many of my past quilts and my current quilts I have in progress. I also use it for my small projects such as clothing, animals, crafts, etc. I find that there is “no comparison” when it comes to lint or strength while I’m using it! Not to mention how “long” it can last when I wind up my bobbins . I will never use anything else! It truly is the very best thread out there for all my needs! =)

  70. I always piece with 50 wt Aurifil. I purchased the giant cone and it works perfectly on my Juki. Love it.

  71. My current spool of 50 wt thread, using a thread stand, keeps shredding and breaking, even after using a new needle. My machine was recently serviced so don’t think it is a machine problem. Is it possible I have a defective spool of thread?

    1. Try changing your needle and oiling your machine.
When this happens to me, the machine usually needs a good cleaning.

    2. Hi, BJ — thank you for the question. I’d love to understand the setup on your machine so we can help you get past the shredding and breaking. First, try to wiggle that bottom flange away from the base of the threads a bit. Second, ensure that your thread only touches thread guides. If it’s rubbing against anything else, it could be prone to breaking or shredding. Let’s plan to work together to get past this challenge. It is Not very likely that it’s a defective spool — but we’re always open to reviewing the situation and, if necessary, getting you a replacement spool. Feel free to email me karen@aurifilusa.com — I’ll be happy to help.

  72. We can’t wait to have Karen speak to us at our quilt guild about all of the wonderful Aurifil threads.

  73. When I started quilting (as a beginner) over 10 years ago, I tried many different threads on my sewing machine. Aurifil 50/2 cotton was the best by far: strength, consistency, color, etc. I’ve never switched to anything else!

  74. I agree with Mariana Diaz’ tip on using the variegated thread. I just finished quilting my daughter’s jewel-toned quilt with a variegated auriful spool and it looks great. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  75. I purchased the Pastel Collection for piecing and machine quilting and a cone of 2600 for piecing….best ever!

  76. Karen inspires my FMQ style. Until recently, I’ve had just a few spools of Aurifil. Now, one of my three LQS is carrying Aurifil and I am pleased!

  77. I use Aurifil for English paper piecing. It glides so nicely through the fabric

  78. I am using Aurifil 50wt for piecing hexagons together and for appliquing them to their backgrounds.

  79. I love using 50 wt for machine piecing. I do believe it has less lint and now I know why my piecing looks better-I’m using 2 ply. Didn’t know that until I read this article. I also love how the label info is explained. Glad I took the time to read this.

  80. I use only Aurifil thread for all my sewing, I quilt so its a go to Only thread worth using…on my Bernina’s all three of them…

  81. As a new quilter I really appreciate the information provided on thread types and all the comments from these wonderful experienced quilters. I’ve been using Aurifil on my projects and have truly enjoyed it. Thanks for making a wonderful thread. ❤️

  82. I recently bought my first spools of Aurifil thread!! Such beautiful colours!
I am wondering if the type of sewing machine you use with it matters? I have 2 Janome, a feather weight and my favourite a Rocketeer!!

    1. Hi, Janet — Great question! We use it on all brands of machines, including the Featherweight and other vintage machines. Lucky you to own a Rocketeer — what a fabulous machine. The only thing you may need to do when switching from a 3ply thread to a 2ply thread is adjust your top tension. We’re excited for you to give it a try. Your machines (and machine techs) will thank you for it.

  83. I am very interested in trying Aurifil thread. I would love my seams to lay flatter so sounds like the 2-ply thread will help with that

  84. I am making Jasen Yenter’s Purrrr quilt. I used fusible web to applique the kittens on the background fabric. I used beautiful Aurifil 28 wt #2130 to blanket stitch around the motif. Top thread using an 80/20 needle with 50 wt in the bobbin. It looks hand stitched and has a lovely subtle sheen. I just love Aurifil threads!

  85. I was introduced to Aurifil thread from Karen Miller.i attended of her free motion quilting classes at the Missouri Star Quilt Company Birthday Bash. I also attended one of her trunk shows at the Birthday Bash. She talked alot about the Aurifil thread she used for each Quilt. WOW! She is so knowledgeable and informative when it comes to Aurifil thread. It just blew my mind how much I didn’t know about thread, yet how much you should really know, to make sure you are using the right thread for specific projects.

  86. Aurifil’s 50 wt cotton is my go-to for quilting. But I also love it for hand sewing hexagon flowers. The many colors provide the variety that I need. Currently hand stitching the hexagon quilt from one of Quiltmania’s last issues.

  87. Never tried Aurifil thread….Yet I’m looking to change that soon Love the array of colors

  88. Great info! I picked up some new threads at QuiltCon this year. Question regrading the spool flange, does it remain off when sewing and then replace it when taking the spool off the pin? Thanks!

    1. Thanks for the great question, Angie. NO need to leave the flange off — just wiggle it away from the bottom threads a bit to avoid putting undue stress on threads in that area. Hope this helps.

  89. I find that using a shorter length of Aurifil 50 wt. thread for hand sewing on binding works well! Lois

    1. Love using Aurifil! I have been using different weights of Aurifil for piecing, machine quilting, and wool appliqué. I wouldn’t use any other brand! The performance is great! My husband is a quality director for a major well known manufacturing company. He is adamant about chosing the right needle for the thread and changing the needle after each project. Thank you for such a wonderful product.

  90. Love the texture and look of Aurifil when used for machine embroidery. Thank you gor a quality thread.

  91. I use Aurifil in my sit down longarm quilting machine. I love using it. When I belonged to a Quilt Guild, they got Karen Miller to do a class with us for free motion quilting on your domestic machine. Loved her class, that was my first time using Aurifil.

  92. Love to use Aurifil thread for piecing quilts.
How long can I keep Aurifil thread before it is to old?

    1. Hi, Donna — If your cotton threads are stored away from dust and direct sunlight, they will be healthy for many, many years! To test the durability of them, use 2 mini charms (2.5″ square), sew them together with a normal seam allowance and piecing stitch length and, from the center, try to pull the seam apart. If the thread is old and brittle, the piecing threads will break (not near the end, but in the center). I hope this helps. Remember to continue to store your threads away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and protect them from dust. Thanks for the great question!

  93. When testing for color when choosing the quilting threads, try to also test some unexpected colors, ones that could be an answer to, “What if I tried this one?” You may be surprised with what you discover.

    1. Absolutely!!! Thanks for sharing this great tip!!

  94. I love Aurifil for piecing & quilting! I also love the sets (especially the Tula Pink ones). Now if I could only find more sewing time…

  95. I use Aurifil for piecing and quilting. I love the colors and how little lint is left in the machine when I’m done!

  96. After reading this, I am more confident in choosing a specific thread for a project I am working on (a 2-sided minky blanket for my grandson). I wanted to do some heavy stitching for both embellishment and controlling the edges of things, so I wanted to use a heavier thread. Now I know what to look for! I grew up sewing, and about all I knew about thread was sewing, embroidery floss, and upholstery. All this is very new to me!

  97. I love to piece with Aurifil 50 weight and I also enjoy embroidering with it. Love the colors!

  98. Aurifil is by far my favorite thread to sew and quilt with. I wish I’d found this resource before figuring out on my own through trial and error that I had to use the smallest spool holder (“special” spool holder in Janome terms) – and purchase it separately. Not sure why most machines don’t come with them. Thanks for this wonderful resource!

  99. I was introduced to Aurifil 50 wt. by my quilt shop as a beginning quilter and it has been the only thread I use for piecing. I took your first Threadlabs series and learned so much about different weight threads and uses. I now have a collection of Aurifil in multiple weights and colors. My sewing space is in my guest room and I need to be portable. I find your thread cases to be perfect for my thread storage needs. Thank you KM

  100. Hi Karen,
Thank you so much for all the info on this precious thread. I’m still holding onto a spool of 18 wt that I want to try on my Bernina. What weight should I use in the bobbin?
Love the tip about the flange..I now know not to tug that thread .

    1. Hi Diane — You are very welcome. We’re glad you enjoyed it. Hmmm though…. do you have 28wt on the Grey Spool ? If so, we recommend you use a 90/14 Topstitch Needle with Aurifil 50wt (Orange Spool) in the bobbin. The thread reference card we linked in the blog post has a summary of weight, needle size and bobbin suggestions on page 2 – be sure to download and print it. It’s worth its weight in GOLD. Let us know how the 28wt works for you. It’s my favorite weight.

  101. I use a medium gray shade for all of my piecing. I can have a lot of bobbins pre-wound and never worry about whether I am going to waste what I’m winding, it will always be available for the next project.

  102. I started using Aurifil thread after an on-line class Karen presented during COVID. I have been using it ever since for all my quilting. Thank you for the Thread Reference card available for download!

  103. Friends have been telling me to try this thread, this would be a great way to check it out.

  104. I have been an avid Aurifil thread user at least 8+ years. I love the 50 wt Aurifil thread when sewing on my machine for piecing, quilting, as well as using the Monofilament thread when doing machine applique. For EPP, I use the Aurifil 50 weight. The Aurifil thread moves through my sewing machine with ease and sews beautifully. Recently, I took a ‘Feathers Free Motion’ quilting class taught by Karen Miller at our local quilt store. In this class, Karen shared with us her tips and tricks. I learned how the 28 wt Aurifil when doing Free Motion quilting makes such a difference when creating my designs on the quilt sandwich and also the use other Aurifil thread weights can bring a project to life. Karen shared how using a variety of Aurifil thread weights and colors can make a difference in my quilts going from looking mediocre to fabulous. Thanks Karen Miller for helping to expand my horizons when free motion quilting using different colors and weights of Aurifil Thread and thanks Aurifil for producing beautiful threads with so many choices in weights and colors.

  105. I use Aurifil with all my quilting projects but seem to have mostly neutral grays and tans. I’d love to experiment with a wider color range.

  106. Debbie Skinner,
I am an Aurifil-snob! I only use Aurifil thread in my sewing projects. From needle turn applique’ to machine sewing and quilting.

  107. Over the winter, I embroidered two blocks with a flower market theme using AuriFloss. Now I am in the process of using Aurifil thread to add borders and finish them as wall hangings. Aurifil thread is wonderful!

  108. I have been using Aurfil thread for my piecing and free motion quilting on all my quilts for a while now and love it. The colours are so pretty and I even like to sit and look at the colours ❤️

  109. I almost always use 50wt thread in silver white for piecing. But my absolutely favourite Aurifil thread is 80wt. I use it for appliqué, EPP and handsewing the binding down

    1. I love piecing with aurfil thread. And definitely quilting with embroidery machine. 💗 good luck 👍 everyone!

    1. Aurifil thread is my favorite t thread. I use 50wt for my quilting. Their controls are great and very consistent. My granddaughter now only uses Aurifil. (She’s only 11 and uses my stash. But you need to start them early.) At the major quilt shows they always have a booth and are very helpful. Love Aurifil.

  110. I only use Aurifil thread when making my quilts. My machine loves them too. The history that you shared was very interesting and fun to learn the history of Auriful.

  111. I use Aurifil 50 weight on all my projects, I piece with it, and sometimes I use it to quilt! I was told, “you spend so much time and money on your quilts, don’t use crappy thread”

  112. If you could only use one spool of thread for piecing which one would you recommend?

    1. Hi Natasha, thank you for the question. The Aurifil 50wt/2ply thread on the Orange Spool is widely accepted as the “best of the best” for machine piecing. The 50wt/2-ply on top, combined with Aurifil 50wt/2-ply in the bobbin works perfectly for accurate piecing and flat seams. As far as colors go, many makers love to use color #2600, Dove for their piecing. Others prefer a more taupe shade like #2314. I’m excited for you to try it out!

    1. Hi Living Fountain — thank you for the question. Aurifil recommends using the same fiber (cotton) on top as in the bobbin, but it is not necessary to match the same weight top and bobbin. For example, you can use an Aurifil 50wt/2-ply bobbin with most any other weight on top. There are times though, when working with the heavy 12wt/2-ply Aurifil cotton, that you’ll need to put something slightly heavier in the bobbin, like Aurifil 40wt/2ply on the green spool. The Thread Reference Card identified in the post (above) has this type of informative information outlined for each weight of thread. I hope you find it helpful.

  113. Lovely threads. Any tips for using heavier threads for topstitching? Ie, needle size, how to get balance in tension.

    1. Hi Sue, another great question! Personally, I love to topstitch with Aurifil 12wt cotton on top and Aurifil 40wt in the bobbin. You’ll need a 90/14 or 100/16 topstitch needle to work with this very heavyweight thread. In my case, the use of Aurifil 40wt / 2ply in the bobbin nets successful results. I do need to lower my top tension a bit with 12wt (thicker) on top and 40wt (thinner) in the bobbin. Stitch slowly and enjoy the beautiful results. Check out this bog post for some sweet images and more tips: https://auribuzz.com/2023/01/27/2023-thread-matters-with-karen-l-miller/

  114. My lastest project using Aurifil 50wt was turning a few orphan blocks into potholders and quilting these with Aurifil. I use Aurifil for both piecing and quilting and have used several different weights for quilting.

  115. I am new to Aurifil – having selected a 50wt for a recent dressmaking project. I notice- and appreciate! – the lack of lint!! I have just finished a swimsuit where I used clear monofilament – fantastic!
It feels like the start of a love affair….. #latetotheparty 😄

  116. I was introduced to Aurifil thread when I took a series of FPP classes with Elissa Zicardi. The thread was fantastic for the projects we made culminating in a quilt, Starlines by Stacie in Stitches. I have never used any other thread for FPP. Thank you Elissa and Aurifil.

  117. 50W is good to sew with on string quilts and crumb blocks.
With limited eye sight, so easy to thread the sewing machine.

  118. If I were stranded on a deserted island—-with a sewing machine and all my fabric!—-and could have only ONE color of Aurifil, it would be Dove 2600. It’s amazing how that thread color blends across so many colors, regardless of value or volume!

  119. I discovered Karen and her “Subtle Tree” in 2019. Bought her Subtle Sampler and participated in her panel quilt along with Wendy at Ivory Spring. Fast forward I became the program director for my quilt guild for the sole reason being sure to book Karen for her Aurifilosophy program and free motion workshop with Aurifil thread. Can’t wait for her to be with us in October to share her vast knowledge and awesome talent.

  120. I use Aurifil for all my quilt and sewing needs. It’s the best as far as I’m concerned! I have about 50 different colors!

  121. Karen gave an excellent presentation to my guild a little while ago (Royal City). I have quilted for 30 years and sewn for more and I learned a lot! I watched it twice – recommend this to anyone as well as the resources available on the website.

  122. I have used Aurifil since I found it during the pandemic – the world’s happiest accident – and I have been using it ever since for all my quilting projects. I use the neutral colors for piecing, but want to venture out into some of the other weights and colors for decorative stitching. My dream is to have a spool of every color and weight. Some people are fabric addicts, but I’m a Aurifil thread addict!

  123. Thank you for an opportunity to win, and to learn more about Aurifil threads in this newsletter! My machine & I like Auriful threads!

  124. 50wt. is a brilliant piecing thread! I commonly use neutrals, but have 30+ colors in my stash. 12wt. is exceptional for embellishment and is the thickest weight I can run through my machine.

  125. When I started to learn FMQ in 2016 I knew so little about threads. Joining your Frenzy group on FB and learning about Aurifil from you was pivotal for me. It is the thread I use on every quilt I have made for the last 7 years! Thank you!

  126. Started an embroidery a day during COVID using the thread. I have never gone back, I love the thread.

  127. I use Aurifil thread for everything I sew. Predictable outcome, gorgeous colors. How can you go wrong?

  128. I was able to take a class with Karen on machine embroidery and fell in love!. My flower is just the starting point! I already have a Christmas pieced and applique Christmas quilt already cut and ready to go!

  129. I have recently just discovered the awesomeness of Aurifil. I have started my collection and I’m floored at the array of beautiful colors and hues that you offer. I especially love the collections.

  130. I have used aurifil 50 wt for machine piecing but just started the Duckadilly Dear Jane BOM, which is all hand pieced, and the aurifil 50 wt works equally well in that application. Love this thread – and so does my machine!

  131. When I started quilting I was using Mettler thread. After using Aurifil there is no going back. My machine and I love the 80w for all my piecing and sewing needs. This article was so informative- I learned some great tips and things about thread that I haven’t considered. Thank you.

  132. If thread is tangling and curling, wipe a small amount of beeswax (or chapstick in a bind) on the thread.

  133. I always use Aurafil thread for piecing and rely mainly on the basics of white, black and grey. However, I love that there is a a rainbow of colors to choose from for those special projects that need a beautiful top stitch.

  134. Love Aurifil! I’ve used it exclusively since discovering it many years ago. I’m working on a pieced table runner and the 50 wt helps the seams to lie flat! Thanks for a wonderful article educating us all a bit more about Aurifil!

  135. I like using Aurifil variegated threads for piecing. I also love how many colors Aurifil offers!

  136. So much to read about Aurifil. I’m going to share with a friend to use Aurifil with a serger.
    Cindy

  137. I recently purchased the SWATCH BOOK BY AURIFIL. It’s absolutely beautifully made with real thread and did not disappoint! If you haven’t ordered one yet, I HIGHLY recommend it!

  138. We spend a great deal of time and effort creating our sewing projects, so I want to ensure I am using the best products. When it comes to my thread, it’s always Aurifil because I trust that it will endure the test of time and the variety of colors, weights, and sizes is outstanding. I also save time by using Aurifil because I know they will have several options to fit my needs.

  139. Thank you for such an informative article! I keep Aurifil floss handy in my carry on sewing kit for small hand projects to keep me busy while traveling.

  140. I love the look of a contrasting thread on a quilt. It’s an easy way to make a quilt more unique!

  141. I love Aurifil. I just started a quilt top at a quilt retreat I attended for our Quilt Guild ( 46 participants!) It went together great. Less problems with my points coming together. Love this thread!

  142. Thanks to Aurifil I’ve become a “thread snob”! I’m learning how to use the different weights to make my projects pop! The swatch book is a great investment, too.

  143. I love the 50 wt. it’s so versatile – I can use it for both machine and hand sewing projects.

  144. l learned early on that thread does matter. I love to quilt with variegated thread. They add so much interest.

  145. Aurifil 50 wt has been my go-to piecing thread for years in color 2600 Dove Grey. I also signed up for, and did many of the projects offered with AURIFIL THREAD LABS 1.0. Highly recommend thread labs to explore all the Aurifil offerings.

  146. Great informative post! I love the 80 weight for English Paper Piecing. I use a gold or tan color which seems to blend with everything.

  147. Both my sewing machines and I love Aurifil 50 wt thread for quilts. No tangles, no breakage, and even, flat seams. Just started using Aurifloss for bigstitch quilting and I’m enjoying doing that.

  148. Aurifil 50wt thread is what I sew all my quilted projects with… my favourite cone colours are Dove, Natural White, and Black. I also have a variety of large spools is various colours.

  149. The last quilt top I finished was a sampler QAL; I definitely have seen a decrease in the amount of fluff coming off the thread since switching to Aurifil; would definitely recommend!

  150. I live Aurafil. I use it as my goto piecing thread, my bobbin thread when free motion quilting, and often as the top thread when quilting. Big cones of white, black, tan and grey are always at hand. Smaller spools of many colors are also in my collection

  151. I have loved Aurifil Thread Labs the last two years – and keeping my fingers crossed for 3.0! The more I learn about and use Aurifil, the more I love it. You’ve done a great job presenting us with projects that showcase your many offerings of thread and keeping us truly engaged. Thanks!

  152. I remember when I first started quilting and bought the least expensive thread I could find . It lead to much frustration with breakage, excess lint, and bulky seams. Once I bought my first spool of Aurifil I was hooked and found pleasure in sewing without those frustrations as before. My piecing accuracy actually improved as the thread just seemed to melt into my seams.
My once least favorite thing to spend money on is now like buying candy! I’m an Aurifil fan for life!

  153. I only use Aurifil thread! My question is, if I’m traveling to Italy can I get a factory tour?

  154. Love the selection of colors!! Please remind people to keep these spools out of the sun and even out of daylight to avoid fading and degeneration of the thread.
Also, I’m not sure what you mean with the horizontal thread holder. I don’t see how a mug or stand would help (and not mess up the tension).

  155. I have never used Aurifil in my sewing machine, but I would certainly like the opportunity to do so!!

  156. I love using Auriful on the longarm as well as my regular machine.
    Always get great results.
    Thanks AURIFIL

  157. I really want a thread wall but have heard it’s not good for the thread because of dust? Is this a myth?

  158. Using Auriful for the first time as I am learning paper piecing. Like how smooth it is in my machine.

  159. My machine loves Aurifil thread best and is currently working on quilting a wall hanging of plants so I get to play with lots of green thread colors.

  160. Great information! I love Aurifil and it’s the only thread I use for piecing and quilting but I’ve only used 50wt. Which thread is the equivalent of 8wt perle cotton? Is it 8 wt thread or floss? Which thread would you recommend for hand quilting or adding a design to a quilt using a running stitch? I’m thinking of giving it a try for the first time!

  161. I’ve never had the opportunity to use Aurafil but have never heard one negative thing about it. Hope to win so I can try it out!

  162. I have used Aurifil for making quilts and also for bag making. I have been very pleased with the quality of the thread. The only drawback is not being able to find it in stores. I like to be able to see the colors instead of guessing on color match.

  163. Enjoyed reading the history and tips. I have bought the “smallest” cap for my machine. Good tip to use variegated thread for quilting and bought my first spool to try. I never can remember when to do horizontal versus vertical spool. I normally just do horizontal.

  164. I am a hand stitcher/slow stitch. I have used many other threads in the past. How are your colors different from others and are they washable?

  165. I used to use cheap threads in my machine, and when I switched to Aurifil, I noticed that there was so much less lint generated, and my machine ran better. Now, I don’t like to use anything but Aurifil… and it comes in so many colors!
One of my favorite Aurifil thread colors to use on a multi-colored quilt is Marakkesh (sp?). I buy it by the cone so that I always have it on hand.

  166. I love the wide array of colors available. I recently made a Grinch tree skirt for my granddaughter and the only thread I found to match the Grinch color was from Aurifil.

  167. I have an embroidery machine, and a few designs that allow stitch and cut to make a fringe, would your wool thread work well as a cut fringe, it may depend on how tightly it is plied, as wool can felt instead of fringe into separate strands?

    1. Hi Karen — this is an interesting question. First, the wool thread is 50% acrylic and 50% wool. I’m not sure how that would look once fringed. It seems 100% cotton might work better for this function. Have you tried it with the 28wt or 12wt cotton? Also, be sure to check your embroidery machine guidelines. They may suggest there a specific weight of thread to try. They may also warn against using too heavy of a thread. Love to know how you make out with this — please keep us posted.

    2. Hi Karen — this is an interesting question. First, the wool thread is 50% acrylic and 50% wool. I’m not sure how that would look once fringed. 168. It is interesting to know that taking off the end of the spool helps find the beginning of the thread, thanks for sharing that and showing how to leave room for air when putting it back on.

  169. I used to receive a quilting company’s sampler box and ended up with several spools in colors I wouldn’t have bought independently. It’s been great fun to find complementary solids and practice free motion quilting on low-investment projects such as placemats and potholders.

  170. My Pfaff machine is a bit of a “snob”–it seems to sew best when I’m using Aurifil thread!

Is there an Aurifil location in Italy that is open for public visits? I will be visiting this fall and love to work in sewing/textile visits when I travel.

  171. Aurifil to me will always be the gold standard when making a quilt. I get great results when I piece and when loaded on my long arm, the results are spectacular with 40 wt 3 ply thread.

  172. Since i switched to the 50wt, my piecing has greatly improved. I’m in the process of replacing my 40wt (other brand)colors with auriful.

  173. Hi Karen. I love the bright colorful look of batik fabrics. Are there any special instructions for thread tension when sewing them?

    1. Hi Nancy — hmmm… Although the weave on batiks is slightly more dense than quilting cotton, the tension adjustment should not differ. For precise piecing with batiks, I would suggest using a very sharp needle (Microtex Sharp size 75 or larger) and Aurifil 50wt/2ply in top and bobbin. I think you’ll love the way your seams press flat, and you gain precision as compared to using a 3ply thread. Does this help ?

  174. Hi Karen,
What is the heaviest weight I can use in the sewing machine and what needle should I use so it doesn’t shred?
I love Aurifil and use it for all my hand applique as well.

    1. Hi Eileen — this is a great question! Our Aurifilosophers, Artisans and other makers have successfully used all weights of Aurifil on a machine. When using the heavier weights though, (8wt and 12wt), take care to stitch slowly, reduce your top tension, use 40wt in the bobbin AND use a very large (90/14 or 100/16) TOPSTITCH needle. When using these heavier weights, you may have trouble using the automatic threader AND you should avoid using the automatic cutter on your machine (if you have one). The results with heavy weight threads are SPECTACULAR, but experimentation is key. Please reach out if, when experimenting, if you run into any specific challenges. We’re happy to help.

  175. Thank you for all of the thread information in a concise blog posting. I learned a lot!

I received my first Aurifil Advent Calendar in 2024. Having the variety of thread weights was exciting, but now that I have decided to hand embroider a denim jacket for my sister, having the variety of weights and delicious colors is putting this project over the top (having trouble knowing where to stop). The project has also demonstrated first hand the difference between Aurifil and other brands of thread. I hope to expand my heavier weight Aurifil collection for hand work, as Aurifil has been my quilting thread of choice for machine piecing and quilting 🧵

  176. I have used Aurifil since I started quilting “seriously “! So many colors, weights, oh lala!

  177. My medallion quilt is progressing and fitting together beautifully with all Aurifil thread so far. I topstitched the stems on the centerpiece in a matching shade and it’s just the ideal thread for that as well!

  178. Aurifil is my go to quilting thread. I especially love the 80 wt for hand and machine appliqué.

  179. I like the way fabric lies flat when piecing because it’s thinner than other threads, while still having the same weight.

  180. Aurifil 50 wt is the only thread I use for piecing quilts. I use 40 wt to both machine sew and hand stitch the bindings. Thanks for a wonderful product!

  181. Would it be better to store out of dust and humidity, such as in plastic bins or storage units with drawers? I have had on threads on stands and wall racks but worried about dust and getting dry and falling apart faster?

  182. Love the using your thread since I stated machine quilting on my home manchine. Only brand I use now for piecing and free motion quilting. Also love all the different color choices.

  183. Everything i make is made with Aurifil. It’s the only thread I use. My latest is being stitched on my new longarm with beautiful Aurifil threads!

  184. Color 2021 50wt is my go-to thread for quilt tops. I like to pre-wind several bobbins at once so I can keep on sewing through each project I work on without having to slow down in the middle because I ran out.

  185. My machine likes Aurfil thread and so do I. Thanks for the tips on loosening the end piece and which way the thread should come off the spool.

  186. Aurifil is my ‘go to’ thread, especially for piecing. It is particularly noticeable when piecing laser cut quilt pieces. With laser cuts, you have to be particularly precise when you’re stitching the quilt pieces together because they are so precisely cut. It will make a huge difference over the entire because Aurifil allows flatter seams…and those intersections! What a difference Aurifil makes there! If your project calls for finite background fills, you can’t find a better thread than 2 ply Aurifil. The thread just lays in so nicely and the texture is beautiful in your project!

  187. I use 80 weight for all my hand appliqué. Wish more shops carried individual spools

  188. I love reading and viewing each posts- the colors are gorgeous. What is the best way to select a collection?

  189. I am excited to try switching the way the thread comes off the spool as I have had trouble with the thread fraying and breaking. Thanks for the tip

  190. Aurifil 50 wt is the only thread I use for piecing, but I love to go to a 40 wt for my quilting.

  191. I use 50 weight for all of my piecing; the cones last forever! I like 40 wt for decorative applique stitching and for machine quilting on my domestic.

  192. I only use Aurifil for machine piecing and quilting. I just finished 3 kid quilts with cotton tops, fleece backs and bamboo batting. It worked great!

  193. My go to Aurifil colors are 2600 Dove for cool colors and for warmer colors 6730 Brindle. I love how versatile they are for piecing and quilting. Initially I balked at the price of it, but the spools last so long and when you look at the amount of thread you get the cost is not that different from the lower cost threads. I have the least trouble with it and the low lint makes a huge difference in my machine. I’m currently making a paper pieced snail with 50/2 2600 and it always delights me how flat my seams lay with it. I tried recently to use up some old thread I had, but it wasn’t worth it and I went back to Aurifil—less frustration, longer lasting. I finished a quilt last year for a little buddy of mine and quilted it with an Aurifil 50/2 navy. He sleeps with it every night and his Mom machine washes and dries it. After a year it still looks almost new and the stitches have held. If you want something that lasts, is easy to work with, and is easy on your machine there’s nothing more economical than Aurifil.

  194. All of my recent projects are pieced and (hand or machine) quilted with Aurifil. Both my Bernina and I love it.

  195. My go-to thread for piecing, applique, and EPP; results in no tangles, thread breakage, and hours of sewing before any lint. Tip: I learned early to compare thread prices by the yard and because Aurifil large spools and cones of 50 wt. have more yards compared to competitors, this quality thread is always a savings!

  196. I always use Aurifil for both quilts and everyday sewing. It works best with my sewing machine – no breaking or shredding.

  197. I just finished finding equipped with the big stitch, using 8 weight or a Aurifil thread. Love it !
I also just returned from a trip to Italy ..Rome and the Almafi coast was disappointed I didn’t do my research better before going as I did not find any Aurifil thread for sale in shops. I was hoping it would be less expensive in Italy than here in the US…..next time

  198. I just completed a quilt for a sweet couple expecting their first child in May. I used Aurifil 50/2 color 2410 (a pale pink) for piecing, and Aurifil 50/2 color 2445 for quilting. Both my Janome and my Handiquilter machines love Aurifil thread!

  199. Hello Aurifil; still time to enter this wonderful giveaway. Love reading your post.
I always finish my binding with your thread.
So much fun to work with all different colors.
    Talk about collecting aurifil thread.

  200. I absolutely love aurifil thread. It is my go to for all things quilting – by hand or with machine!!

  201. I sew ALL my quilts with my extensive collection of Aurifil!!! Piecing, FMQ, hand stitched binding…Aurifil does it ALL MAGNIFICO.

  202. I’m looking forward to using Aurifil, I just learned that your 2 ply makes flatter seams when I quilt. I love all the colors and thank you for the color chart along with the description of all the threads. It’s like a box of crayons!

  203. I just tried the aurifil 50/3 thread on my longarm for the first time. It ran perfectly. No breakage … I am very pleased. I did use a 60wt thread for the bobbin I had in stock. The combination was perfect. I will be setting up a wholesale account and order in Canada. 🇨🇦

  204. Have two projects planned with aurifil:
    – a machine quilted washi plus jacket for the RSS makers program, getting a yellow for some flamy lines.
    – a quilted jacket about the West Virgínia Mine Wars with Chalk and Charcoal base print and heavily hand quilted in, likely, grey/blue/green.

Waiting to see your girl sewspiscious on next week guild meeting to see your color chart in person and pick out the exact colors 🙂

  205. Love the tip about moving the thread up after shipping. And the colors oh the colors!!!

  206. I teach beginning quilting and always recommend Aurifil 50 wt. because it is simply the best for quilting.

  207. Autofill is the only thread I buy for piecing and quilting. I recently decided to try the wool thread in my wool projects. So far, so good. Love the color choices!

  208. I recently used variegated Tula Pink Aurifil thread to quilt a mini quilt made from my hand painted fabrics. It worked beautifully! Will be using more of this beautiful thread!

  209. Thread is what I remain low on, need to check, stock more often. Egyptian cotton is superior.

  210. I just started using Aurifil and absolutely love it! It just melts into the fabric but is still easy to remove if I need to correct a mistake. I just told my sister about it, too!

  211. So many quilts. Where does one go? Comfort bags for cancer and dialysis patients. Aurifil 40 weight to the fore! Srtong. Color coordinated. Everyone happy. (I would post a picture but have no idea how.)

    1. My machine likes Aurifil best for free motion quilting. Less lint buildup than other threads.

  212. Love 80 weight Aurifil for all my needleturn applique and EPP. It just disappears into the background.

  213. I got a degree in Clothing and Textiles fifty years ago. We never talked about thread weight and such. This is an excellent article!

  214. I love using Aurifil thread. I find it is less linty than other cotton threads I have used. I also love the curated thread sets like The Last Homely House set. I like the way your products are shipped, neatly packaged in a nice box with packing.

  215. I have used Aurifil threads in all the weights and types and have loved them all! I am a thread collector…ummmm shhhh hoarder… and love your threads! I use all of what I have so I have room to buy more! I enjoy your educational content and have learned oh so much! Thank you

  216. I’ve always used the neutral colors of 50wt aurifil for machine piecing. Best there is!

  217. Aurifil Dove grey 2 ply 50 weight is the best for piecing. The color disappears on every color so no stitches show. Sometimes can be a negative if you have to unsew…

  218. Fascinating read! So much great info! I love getting your messages in my inbox. I have just been introduced to Aurifil 50 wt for piecing and am looking forward to trying out some 80 weight in a hand appliqué project In my queue.

  219. Thank you for sharing all of these Aurifil Interesting facts I like knowing more about what I use for. all my piecing! Now can we get a scheduled tour of Aurifil in Chicago!! I have been waiting for this incredible opportunity!!!!!!

  220. When I have trouble matching the color with fabric or when the fabric has a variary of colors, I can ususally find a gray that works well. I keep lots of options in gray on hand just in case!

  221. How many variegated 50W colors do you carry? I really love your thread and I’m glad for all the information you gave us about threads!

  222. I started using Aurifil thread in my bobbin after seeing Karen at the MSQC Birthday Bash last September. I no longer use any other thread for bobbins, and I’m working through my thread spools to switch to Aurifil completely. I love the flat seams and the bobbins last longer. Great tip for checking the upper tension when using Aurifils thinner threads.

  223. Aurifil thread is the ONLY thread for me. It was recommended to me by a quilt instructor when I was a newbie quilter. I couldn’t believe what a difference it made in my seam allowance. All of a sudden my seams matched up! I love all the colors it comes in, and the variegated threads. One can never have too much Aurifil thread!

  224. 50 wt. Aurifil is my favorite thread! I use it for piecing & quilting. My sewing machine loves it, and I always get a nice looking stitch when using this thread!

  225. Thanks for all the great tips! I love Aurifil for all my projects, the seams are flat, strong and the choice of colors is overwhelming.

  226. Aurifil 50wt 2ply is my go to thread for piecing. Currently using it for the Sewing Basket quilt from Laundry Basket Quilts, designed by Edyta Sitar.

  227. Think I now have to buy and try for piecing after reading all the information and comments ,guess Imlate to the fan club .Used once for along arm quiltingjob that I did not want to use monofilament but needed a blending color to avoid multiple color changes . Will buy some of the beautiful colors to piece .

  228. All these years and I never knew the flange came off the end. I love the 50 wt for piecing quilts. I now have other weights having done Thread Labs 1.0 and 2.0. It’s been fun to play with something I don’t normally use and figure out where I can use it in the future.

  229. I love Aurifil thread and use it every day to piece my quilts. I have a McKenna Ryan quilt I am using the 80 weight thread on to stitch around all of the applique. It works so well and really disappears into the batiks. I love the varigated threads as well and use them in my hand quilting too. I have recently gotten my friend to start using Aurifil and she is very happy with how her piecing and quilting are going since switching to your thread! Thanks for all of the beautiful colors and weights. Such an interesting article today too.

  230. I always use 50 wt aurifil – like the less lint for my machines. Works great 🙂 Just finished The Farmer’s Wife Block – QAUG

  231. I was testing my machine after being serviced. I used another thread brand and the stitches weren’t nice. The tech told me to change to my Aurifil cone and “voila” the stitches are perfect! I pieced all my quilts with Aurifil.

  232. Just finished a lemon themed quilt for a bridal shower gift – she found her main squeeze!!!
I’m never without my Aurifil dove grey. I keep a good stash on hand always as it’s my go to thread. The color goes with everything.

  233. I have discovered the wonderfulness of Aurifil floss… the beautiful colors and the smoothness with which it works for hand-stitching and hand-quilting my original creations.

  234. I don’t remember when I discovered Aurifil thread but my machine immediately fell in love with it. I had less thread shredding, breaking and so much less lint. My sewing projects turned out so much nicer, also. My go to thread is now Aurifil! Thank you for an excellent product.

  235. This was a very interesting history lesson! Here I am at 80 years of age and learning! Great for
    my slow, hand stitching! Thanks!!

  236. My first quilting teacher told me about Aurifil thread. I’ve tried a few others, but I keep going back to it because it’s the best.

    1. Hi Carla – thank you for the question. The short answer is Yes! For a longer, very informative and detailed response do checkout Jenni Smith — one of our favorite garment creators!! In 2018 Jenni wrote a 6-session series about garment making with Aurifil thread and how to apply each of the different weights. To view the series, begin with this post: https://auribuzz.com/2018/11/02/dressmaking-essentials-with-jenni-smith-why-cotton/ There is a post each week, concluding on Dec 7th that same year. Enjoy!!

    1. Hi Ceil, great question! A thread net is a stretchy mesh sleeve that slips over a cone of thread to keep the thread from unwinding or tangling, especially useful when using slippery or large cones. Aurifil ships their Nylon Monofilament Cones with a thread net already in place. Personally, I’ve not needed to use a thread net on the cotton thread cones – but they work wonders when stitching with cones of Monofilament. Does this help?

  237. Love all the different colors and that it’s 2ply. I use it for all of my sewing!

  238. In the process of changing over all my thread to Aurifil. Believe it’s better for my machines. Just completed piecing a quilt top using 50 wt, 2 ply using MSQC pattern named Antique Lace. Turned out gorgeous. Aurifil thread produced the prettiest, cleanest seams. So happy with your product. Thanks, Aurifil!

  239. I am confused. I got the email about the giveaway today. So it it over? I would like to know if using a heavier weight thread on the top, should I use 50wt still on the bottom? Thanks!

    1. Hi Babs, we ran 2 different giveaways (now both over). One for our blog subscribers and one for our newsletter subscribers. When using 12wt or 8wt in your machine, we recommend Aurifil 40wt in the bobbin because it’s slightly heavier than 50wt. Our free resource, the Thread Reference Card, is chock-full of great information about choosing needles and bobbin weights when working with all of the Aurifil offerings. You can print it from this location: https://www.aurifil.com/auriworld/resources Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you!

  240. Aurifil is my favorite thread for piecing. I just finished an Elizabeth Hartman quilt and am starting another.

  241. Oh my goodness what a great history and lots of useful information in your post. I didn’t realize about the bottom of the thread spool coming off but now that I do I will not forget it and it’ll be so much easier in finding the start of the thread. Thanks for that tip. As far as my using aurifil thread…I do use them on all my quilting projects and really love it. I love the array of colors that you all provide and plan on printing out the chart just to have as quick reference. Anyway thanks again for the story behind the thread and the giveaway. I would love to have it.

  242. There are so many wonderful colors that will complement any project. use a taupe
Color to piece together scraps because it matches just about everything

  243. What an interesting post! I’ve always wondered what all of the information meant. I’m a big fan of variegated thread for quilting. Adds a little something extra to a wetting l quilt.

  244. I see that I should be using the other spool holder to draw the thread the proper way. What size needle is optimum?

    1. Hi Patti — yes, remember to draw the thread over the TOP of the spool (not from the side) regardless of if it is mounted vertically or horizontally. To choose the correct needle size by weight of thread, use our free resource, the Thread Reference Card. It is chock-full of great information about choosing needles and bobbin weights when working with all of the Aurifil offerings. You can print it from this location: https://www.aurifil.com/auriworld/resources Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you!

  245. I love using Aurifil to sew my quilts! I especially like using it to hand sew my binding on. It always sews up like a dream.

  246. It definitely makes a difference, aurifil is now my go to thread. My seams are just so perfectly smooth and flat!

  247. I began my quilting journey in Oct 2019. Aurifil thread is the only thread I use and I always purchase it from my local quilt store Mad About Patchwork in Stittsville, ON

  248. I have not had the opportunity to sew with your thread. Would love to try it on my machine–I see it has good reveiws.

  249. I bought the Aurifil coordinating thread set for Barbara Pershing & Mary Hoover’s Total Bloom BOM. The colors are vibrant and match the batik fabric as if by magic. I admit I had to ask my quilter friends how to open the spool—after 50+ years of sewing! To one of those elegant ladies, I shared the spool label information, who was literally flabbergasted! Could a reference guide for the label info be created?
Thank you for the ongoing education and wonderful thread!

    1. Thank you for the kind feedback, Teresa! And, for sharing information with your friends. On Page 1 of our free resource, the Thread Reference Card, you’ll find a few key components of the label. Page 2 is chock-full of great information about choosing needles and bobbin weights when working with all of the Aurifil offerings. You can print it from this location: https://www.aurifil.com/auriworld/resources Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you!

  250. I was uncertain at first trying Aurifil 50 wt. for piecing; thought it was all hype! BUT, once I tried it, I have never looked back! Makes my 1/4′ seems so accurate! No bulk in the seams!

  251. Some quilters use a different thread for the bobbin and call it a bottom thread. Can you tell me what weight it is? Usually when doing the satin stitch.

  252. I have been using Aurifil 50 wt thread for several years. I make 35 – 50 quilts a year for Project Linus. This is my “go to” thread. I really like it for FMQ. I used to purchase at Craft Warehouse, but they closed March 31. So, I will need to find a new location.

  253. I have used Aurifil 50wt for all my quilting. I love how much is on a spool and even more the minimal amount of lint that accumulates in my machine.

  254. I love the look of hand quilting with Aurifil- always the right wt and beautiful colors to match and better yet to add contrast and or color match🤗!!

  255. I have loved Aurifil since I first starting quilting in 2017. I now basically only use 50wt Dove gray for piecing but also have a rainbow of beautiful colors for applique. Thank you for this article with the helpful information. I learned so much about Aurifil that I didn’t know.

  256. I love Aurifil thread.
I recently made more bibs for a grandchild.
It sews beautifully, and is low lint/fluffing.

  257. I mostly us Aurifil 50 wt thread for my quilting projects. I am currently working the Lori Holt Quilted Scarecrow quilt. I have also bought some Lori Holt thread packs which help when I am doing one of her appliqué quilts. This thread is phenomenal.

  258. Aurifil is the best! I use it in every project. 40 wt for bags and garments, plus on my embroidery machine. 50 wt for piecing, and 40-3 for my long arm machine. We need more colors for 40-3!! More shades of purple, green, aqua and teal.

  259. I have been using Aurifil for several years and love it so much I give it as gifts to my quilting friends! It makes the flattest seams. This article was very informative. Thanks for the added knowledge.

  260. While sewing up blocks recently I thought it was time to change my bobbin but decided to just let it run out. I was able to sew 22 more blocks because Aurifil is so thin it just looked like it was running out! Love Aurifil!

  261. Aurifil is my favorite thread for any textile work: piecing (50wt), quilting (40wt, Forty, and 28 WT), accents (8wt, 12wt and 12wt wool), applique and EPP (50wt and 80wt), embroidery (8wt, 12wt and 12wt wool, Aurifloss), tatting (12 wt, I need to try the 8wt), and micro-crochet (12wt wool). I almost never experience breakage and linting is very low, but I am careful to adjust my top tension and thread the machine properly. The continuous education series by the Aurifil ambassadors and artisans, and the availability of the Aurifil team make working with Aurifil an even better experience! Shout out to Karen, who is always extremely helpful!
