The holidays are officially stitching their way into our hearts, and our Aurifil Artisans have brought the festive magic to life in the most heartwarming way. This month’s challenge was something a little different—a Secret Stitch Swap designed to celebrate handmade joy, thoughtful creativity, and the beauty of giving within our global maker community.
Each participating Artisan was secretly paired with another, asked to create a small, surprise gift made with Aurifil thread— think ornaments, mini hoops, bookmarks, needle minders, and more. The only rule? Keep it a surprise! Makers were encouraged to share their creations online without revealing the recipient, letting the spirit of generosity shine through each thoughtful stitch.
While all the handmade projects are revealed in this post, the Artisans themselves still don’t know which creation they’ll be receiving. It’s a joyful mystery— one that keeps the holiday cheer alive just a little longer. From embroidered treasures to quilted keepsakes, every swap item is a celebration of craftsmanship and connection. We’re thrilled to showcase these heartfelt gifts today!

Christmas and stitching are a beautiful combo. I created a mini FPP Christmas tree and added lights and baubles with a range of stitches and some mini clear beads. I also made a folded fabric star and added a couple of little star stitches on either side, creating a hanging hoop loaded with sparkle.

For the October Aurifil Artisan Challenge, I made three gift tags worth keeping. They can double as ornaments, bag charms, mini-mini-mini wall hangings — or whatever feels right. Create your own by using a light, solid fabric for the back and writing a thoughtful message with a thin Micron marker or fabric marker. I used Aurifil 80wt for the needle-turn appliqué and a variety of weights for the embroidery and machine stitching.

I made a little pot for the Aurifil Thread Artisan Challenge for October. I used a small scrappy quilted sample to form the main part (no pattern, just improvised!), then covered it with some leftover scraps. It’s a perfect little size for storing notions or spools of thread. I added a bump for a pin cushion!

This handmade pouch is stitched with love and a touch of holiday cheer, featuring cozy orange accents and a charming quilted pattern. Perfect for holding little treasures, travel essentials, or craft supplies, it’s both beautiful and practical. The warm threads and thoughtful details make it a heartfelt gift that’s sure to brighten someone’s season!

In an attempt to make something festive that could still be used year-round, I landed on making a Make and Mend Kit by Rosie Taylor Crafts. I love patchwork, but have never gone as small as 1.5” squares (1” finished)! With a scissors pocket, vinyl and fabric pockets, and felt for needles, I hope that this will be enjoyed by a fellow Artisan who likes to make on the go.

A handmade holiday with scraps – use up those favourite holiday fabric scraps and turn them into quilted hot pads. I made a variety of quilt blocks (most using the quilt as you go method) and quickly turned them into a stack of holiday hot pads ready for gift giving.

Sitting down with a cup of tea, a sneaky homemade biscuit or two and crocheting an intricate snowflake with different thread weights is the perfect relaxing antidote to the busy run-up to Christmas. I enjoyed the mindfulness of making this set of snowflakes for our Artisan swap and hope these ornaments will bring some cozy winter vibes to the recipient!

There is nothing more festive than a little Christmas Tree! Using some beautiful little pieces of Renaissance Ribbons, some fabric, some stuffing and Aurifil thread. I did a quilt as you go sewing each ribbon into the next, then used some cute vintage fabric I had in my stash and stuffed it with some pillow stuffing! It is easily something you can hang on a doorknob or on a wall to add some Christmas vibes, and it is the perfect project if you have little bits of ribbon or fabric and want to make an easy project!

I tried something very different for the Aurifil Thread October Challenge – and I had the best time creating it too. First, I embroidered the Emperor Chick on cotton fabric using Cotton 40wt thread, and due to the many layers of thread, the fabric started to raise and the surface became 3-dimensional. An effect only dense machine stitching can achieve, and I love using it to my advantage. I padded the penguin to avoid losing its shape over time. Not sure if that could happen, but I don’t want to take chances. For the snow, I used leftovers from last year’s Christmas decorations, some fake snow blankets, and embroidered the angel effect with a couple of white tones and added merino wool on top to hide the stitching.

No one can tell me it’s too early for Christmas! I embraced the Christmas spirit for the Aurifil Artisan October Secret Stitch Swap with this classic, elegant red and white Christmas stocking, big stitch hand quilted with Aurifil Cotton 12wt thread.

I love the opportunity to do a swap with fellow makers and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to create this sweet applique 3D wall mini wall hanging. I used my go-to 50 wt thread to stitch the flower design and to put the whole piece together. I then added a little bit more embroidery detail with a simple chain stitch to highlight the flowers petals and centre using Aurifloss.
