Making It Their Own: Ten Makers Celebrate The Genesis of a Journey

What happens when you hand a group of talented makers a care package and the freedom to do whatever they want with it? You get ten completely different answers— and there is pure magic in that.

To celebrate the launch of The Genesis of a Journey, Genesis Hall‘s debut Aurifil thread collection, late last year, we partnered with Genesis, Riley Blake Designs, and Renaissance Ribbons to put together something special. Each maker received a curated package: fabrics from The Genesis of a Journey line with Riley Blake, the full 10-spool Genesis of a Journey Aurifil thread set, and ribbons and notions from Renaissance Ribbons. The only guideline was to use the products to create something new. The process, the project, the inspiration— entirely up to them.

We invited a collection of Aurifil Artisans from the 2025/26 team in addition to makers selected by Genesis herself, and what came back wowed us at every turn. Getting to showcase the creativity and talent of makers like these is one of our favorite things and we know you’ll be just as inspired.

There’s something that feels particularly full circle about this one. Genesis began her Aurifil journey as an Artisan— joining the team at just 12 years old as our youngest member ever. Now the Artisans are the ones celebrating her. Look across all ten projects and you’ll notice a beautiful throughline: nearly every maker built something meant to go somewhere. Bags, backpacks, pouches, cases, field kits — things to carry and bring along. For a collection called The Genesis of a Journey, that feels exactly right.

Sofia @sofianatty.nyc, Maker Field Kit

“The Genesis of a Journey” bundle arrived just as I was preparing to travel back home to Lisbon, Portugal. The timing couldn’t be more perfect to finally sew a Maker Field Kit. I used the “Rosie Sewing Case Pattern” by @rosie.taylor.crafts as a base for my project and adapted it to fit my maker on the move needs.

Aurifil Threads: Cotton 12wt 2270, 2540; Cotton 50wt 2315, 2835; Cotton 80wt 5022; Cotton 40wt 1320, 2740; Cotton 28wt 2588; Cotton Floss 2430

Amy @quitoquilts, Wall Hanging

For my Genesis of a Journey project I made a wall hanging to give to Genesis. It features an ice cream cone that is in one of her fabrics (an ice cream cone that represents a gelato place in Italy that is special to her and her family). I used her fabrics, her quilt tags, and 7 out of 10 threads from her Aurifil thread collection.

Aurifil Threads: Cotton 80wt 5022; Cotton 50wt 2835, 2315; Cotton 40wt 1320, 2740; Cotton 28wt 2588; Cotton Floss 1148

Vicki @whatvickimade, This Girl Can Backpack

A special one for my daughter, a reminder that she most definitely CAN! I just loved this Aurifil x Genesis collab so much I knew it would be the perfect materials to make a special bag for my daughter. I pieced the wording and fabrics together and quilted them with the beautiful selection of Aurifil threads. The backpack is the Elvenses pattern from Sew Liberated.

Sarah @sarahb_sews, Quilt Coat

This handquilted jacket is pieced from a playful mix of pastel prints, checks, and florals, using three different thread colors and thread weights (#2588 light magenta 28wt., #2315 shell 50wt., and #5022 mustard 80wt.) to add depth and a playful feel. Both the fabric and thread are from the Genesis of a Journey collection celebrating a cheerful aesthetic to accompany any adventure.

Mary @embercraftcompany, Backpack, Vest & Coin Purse

“This is the patchwork version of Fran’s pattern (Cotton and Joy) and was so fun to put together! Emma helped me arrange the squares for the front and back panels. The fun travel themes and flowers in pinks and purples and mints hit all of her favorite things and she is so excited about this! Major mom win with this one. Genny’s coordinating thread set from Aurifil provided the perfect palette to complement this project — I used 12wt., 28wt., and even 80wt. thread to quilt different areas of the panels. The straps, iron-on patch, and woven tags are all by Genny for Renaissance Ribbons and coordinate perfectly. Emma’s favorite color is “rainbow” so this could not have been a better fit for her.”

“This is the Madison Vest pattern by Little Lizard King — the hooded version with the bow closure, something you could make in an afternoon easily (the quilting took longer than the actual assembly!). After receiving the fat quarter bundle, I knew I needed some yardage of a couple of the prints to make something for Emma to wear. The ‘It Takes a Village’ print in rose is absolutely the sweetest — like a game of I Spy with all the adorable travel-themed illustrations! It’s lined with the Bavarian Rose stripe from the collection and some leftover sherpa scraps for a super cozy hood. The quilting is a simple grid using the purple 12wt. from Genny’s Aurifil collection, with the gorgeous 40wt. blue thread on either side — a kind of plaid effect where the different weights give such a fun texture.”

“There’s probably a diagnosis for this, but once an idea gets in my head, there’s no stopping it until I work it out. My husband calls it going on a side quest, and that could not be more apt. When I saw I had a few scraps of the Genesis of a Journey fabrics that would be perfect for a Strawberry Coin Purse (project for The Cutting Table/Suzy Quilts), I had to stop everything and make one. And it’s absolutely as cute as I thought it would be. Check out that quilting on the strawberry panel with Aurifil Cotton 12wt — it’s been a minute since I’ve played with this weight and it’s so chunky and satisfying!”

Luci @seagardensewing, Holland Pouches

Aurifil Thread connected me with the thread I needed to create the perfect springtime project! I had the pleasure of working with coordinating thread for Genesis’s first fabric line, Genesis of a Journey. I made three large #HollandPouch patterns and lined the handle with the coordinating Renaissance Ribbons ribbon and woven labels. My partner already claimed the teal one for themselves, and now I get to pick the other bag I’ll use as a toiletry travel bag. Thread used: 80wt in Mustard (5022), 50wt in Medium Mint (2835), 28wt in Light Magenta (2588), 12wt in Medium Lavender (2540).

Threads: Cotton 80wt 5022; Cotton 50wt 2835; Cotton 28wt 2535; Cotton 12wt 2540

Christine @lopolokko, Pillow

I’m so pleased it’s finally sunny so I can show you this new pillow! A lot of machine quilting + hand embellishments for this one, fortunately it’s not a king size… I’ve loved to use beautiful fabrics designed by Genesis Hall, mixed with assorted coordinating threads from Aurifil in various weights so my boho hen has beautiful and colorful wrinkles.

Breanna @roseivyquilts, Nightingale Case & Quilted Pouches

I’ve been in bag making mode for the last few weeks! I’ve had my eye on this #nightingalecase pattern by Center Street Quilts for a while, and it was such a delight to put together. I had the opportunity to work with some of the fabrics from the Genesis of a Journey fabric line by Genesis Hall for this project, along with some fun ribbons, quilt labels, and her new @aurifilthread collection. The bright colours and fun travel inspired prints were exactly what I needed while missing out on all the QuiltCon fun.

When given the choice I will always be firmly on team “Quilt it to Death”. I used two fat quarters from the Genesis of a Journey fabric line by Genesis for Riley Blake Designs to create these two zippered pouches and accidentally ended up using an entire spool of Aurifil thread in the process. Pouches are made based on the #hemingwaypouch by Center Street Quilts with some adjustments.

Fiona @spunstraw, Patchwork Duffle Mini

A #patchworkdufflemini with fabric by Genesis Fall for Riley Blake Designs and webbing, and Stitch Supply Co zipper and hardware! I absolutely love the combo of all of it and that black and white and pink zip was ideal to go with the fabric! I decided to not put any handles on it and just use the shoulder strap so that the straps didn’t cover up the patchwork on the bag. I’ve been going to @thebodyclub.uk for a while now and needed a bag for my boxing gloves and this is absolutely perfect. The hardware goes so well with my @swissskip jump rope too. Pattern is by Knot and Thread. Thread is all Aurifil. Fabric is Genesis Hall for Riley Blake Designs and webbing is by Genesis Hall for Renaissance Ribbons.

Jemima @tiedwitharibbon, Confetti Pillow

Genesis Hall is an incredibly talented young quilter I’ve loved following for years— watching her grow, create and now launch her very first collections is just amazing. Between school and golf, she has designed not only a fabric range, but coordinating threads and sewing notions too… what an achievement! I couldn’t resist stitching up a Confetti Pillow using prints from The Genesis of a Journey collection with Riley Blake Designs— such a perfect way to let these fabrics shine. The colours and prints feel joyful, adventurous and full of story, inspired by Genesis’ travels around Europe as a military kid. Her Aurifil thread box is just as special— a 10-spool set with a mix of thread weights for quilters, garment makers, bag makers and more. And the finishing touches from Renaissance Ribbons (labels, ribbons, patches and webbing) make this whole collection feel extra thoughtful and fun to sew with. Pattern— Confetti Pillow (available in my store).

EN: “A pop, handmade bag to take on a trip with @zakadit— that’s what I made yesterday in a single day at @atelier_malesherbes… I once again used the colorful fabrics from Genesis Hall x Riley Blake Designs, available at @motifpersonnel. I added the Renaissance Ribbons strap and ribbons to sew the Side Hustle pattern by Patterns by Annie— a little Dior saddle bag energy, but in a maker’s version with its multiple pockets. A lovely break from the secret projects filling my days that I can’t show you just yet.”

The Journey Continues

Ten makers, ten care packages, ten entirely different creative directions — and every single one of them exceeded our expectations. Getting to watch this community show up for Genesis in this way has been one of the true highlights of this launch. She started as an Artisan, grew into a designer, and now has ten beautiful projects made in her honor. We couldn’t be more proud.

The Genesis of a Journey thread collection, fabrics, and ribbons are all available now. We can’t wait to see where you take it.
