Marjan van der Heijden wins AT Open European Quilt Championships 2008

Since her early childhood, Marjan has been busy with fabric, pearls, ribbon and diverse other materials. Marjan accompanied her mother since early childhood to the European Quilt Championships, not as contester but as visitor of the show. Many people know her as “the little girl making some handcrafts in the coffee corner”. Her love for textile and color was already amazing back then. Her quilt “1001 nights” was awarded first price by the international jury as “the European Champion Novice of 2008”. The award was handed out to her on Saturday May 3, 2008 during a special diner evening in Koningshof at Veldhoven, The Netherlands. This was not the only award she received. Aurifil Italy had an extra award for her to encourage her in quilting. She received a box with more than 200 bobbins. The box was personally handed out to her by Alex Veronelli, Product Manager of Aurifil Italy. This was a double surprise for Marjan in one week. A week she will never forget! Marjan is at sixteen years of age the youngest prize winner ever. She is already thinking of a design of a quilt for The Open European Quilt Championships of 2009. The theme for next year is “Magic
