  1. No, I’ve never tried sewing illustration. Thanks for the international giveaway. Your generosity is much appreciated.

  2. My very first quilt I was in high school and it was all done by hand. I abandoned it before it was finished. When our kids were in grade school I joined up with a quilting group at church. So my first completed quilt was a baby quilt for the local crisis pregnancy center the church supports. It was all pastels and whites. All 41/2 inch squares.

  3. I have never tried Sewing Illustration. Would love to take a look at it. Thanks for participating in the giveaway.

  4. My first quilt was a gift for my then three year old nephew, Billy. I babysat him every weekend for the first year of his life when his parents were working, so we were very close. I found a book of Irish Chain patterns, and made his with a print with football players, and red and blue coordinating solids. He kept that quilt on his bed for years, until it was too worn out It was well loved!

  5. THANK YOU FOR A NEAT GIVEAWAY! I STARTED SEWING AS A CHILD,HAND EMBROIDERY+THEN THE MACHINE.JUST MIGRATED INTO QUILTING>LOVE IT! FIRST PROJECT>A DOLL QUILT!
    MERRY CHRISTMAS !

  6. I was ‘strong armed’ in to making a quilt by my daughter. She was relentless until I finally gave in and said fine! Just to get her to stop, I never wanted to learn to quilt! My first quilt was a simple ‘queen’ size quilt make with squares. It was awful! Wonky, uneven, hideous fabrics! But, I was hooked on quilting by the time I finished it. That was over 10 years ago and I’m still obsessed with quilting!

  7. My first quilt was a small wall hanging. I bought a kit, of 3 quarter yds. of fabric, a center design block and a pattern. I think it ended up as a 15 inch block, which I no longer have. I used a yard stick, I didn’t own or know about rotary cutters or mats and an old machine I borrowed from my mother, I had a great time. Then the bug got in me a hasn’t ever left. 😄 Toni Anne

  8. I adore Minki Kim’s work! I would so LOVE this prize.

I did try one sewing illustration and it worked out amazingly, so would love to try more!

  9. Thanks for the chance for the international prize. my first quilt was one I made for a new baby and it was made from a variety of fabrics and backed with fleece and we used it as a floor blanket.

  10. My first quilt was a Lone Star wall hanging that I made in 1985. I machine pieced the top and then hand quilted it. I fell in love with the feeling of fabric becoming a quilt as I stitched it.

  11. My very first quilt was a simple patchwork full-sized quilt made of shades of purple. It was all hand-cut with a blanket for batting and a sheet for the back. Yarn-tied too! I still have it 35 years later and it’s been on many family adventures.

  12. My first quilt was one using 10 in polyester squares sewed together randomly when I was about eight or so. I did it on my granny’s treadle machine. It weighed a ton after I got it done! 40+ years later I still have it & it is still in good condition.

  13. I took a quilting class at a local library where we were taught by an elderly woman who just wanted to share her love of quilting. I loved it – and still do!! Thanks so much for the chance to win 🙂

  14. My first quilt was churn dash blocks. There were no rotary cutters, I traced my pieces using cardboard templates. I hated the tracing and cutting. The quilt fabric just shredded over the years to expose the polyester batting inside. My quilts are much nicer now and I don’t need those awful cardboard templates and scissors!

  15. My first quilt was a panel quilt made for my son. It has black bears on it. I made that over 25 years ago. It hasn’t withstood the test of time. I have asked my son to get rid of it. He says he will not, because it reminds him of me. Let me also add he requests a quilt for Christmas every year. 🙂

  16. No, I have never tried Sewing Illustration … in fact had never heard about it. That’s one of the great things of this giveaway series, as even if we do not win, we win, by finding out about new things! Thank you for the special international drawing and being part of this adventure.

  17. My first quilt was actually two. I made them for my college dorm room in 1980, using Eleanor Burn’s Quilt in a Day Log Cabin pattern.

  18. My first quilt was a baby quilt for my nephew (now 20 years old). It was a pinwheel quilt in bright primary colors and I had to tell my sister-in-law it was meant to be used. She wanted to put it away and save it so it wouldn’t get messed up!

  19. My first quilt was a class that I took from a local quilter. It was a fun class with different blocks each week. I still have the quilt and I have to say that I was hooked on quilting after that class.

  20. My the first quilt was made on a whim and used upholstery fabric for sashing 🙂 I didn’t have a clue how to bind it so I just rolled the edges inside and top stitched it.

  21. My first quilt was an alphabet quilt that I didn’t sash properly – it ended up all out of whack. I still have the unfinished, rolled up top folded into my stash – maybe some day I’ll fix it.

  22. My first quilt was one I made with my Mom during junior high and was a scrappy quilt made with fabric left over from our clothes sewing.

  23. My first quilt was a bunch of embroidered blocks that I sashed and made into a baby quilt, it was cute, but I knew nothing about quarter inch seams or how to quilt it. A friend has that quilt and it was completely loved.

  24. My very first quilt was all hand pieced and hand quilted….but that part is still not finished 17 years later!!!! It is a sampler in colors that I still favor today…just not the fabric style 🙂

  25. When I made my first quilt, I had no idea about quilting or making quilts at all. I had collected 125 hankies and began hand quilting 12″ x12″ blocks with them. I added a border and backing in a throw pillow style and tyed ribbons through each corner. Its not perfect, but I am proud of it just the same.

  26. My very first quilt was made for my mother as she entered chemo for lung cancer. She loves crossword puzzles so I fashioned black & white squares in a crossword pattern. She’s cancer free now and still has the quilt draped over her sofa 😀

  27. I made my very first out of old flannel shirts & gave it to my husband to be. He had wondered what happened to all of his shirts. lol But thank goodness, he really did love it though. Good Luck Everyone & Merry Christmas

  28. My first quilt was actually a holiday tree square quilt. I still pull it out each year though I smile at the simplicity of the quilting I did and the fact that I had no idea how to properly bind it so it has puckers along most of the edges. Thank you for a great giveaway!

  29. My first quilt is still not finished, but I went big and bold! I had a ton of “ugly brown fat quarters” and I decided to put all of them together in a twin sized quilt. They actually look nice together, but I didn’t know how to quilt it, so it’s still a WIP! 😀

  30. My first quilt was a wall hanging for fall. It was a bit wonky when finished and I still hang it in the autumn so I remember how far I have come with my quilting.

  31. My first quilt is a rag quilt I made for myself when I was around 19 or 20. I used light blues, light yellows, and creams – all in flannel. Some of the fabric had designs like teddy bears in PJs. I hand quilted each block with stars, changing what color thread I used to compliment the “top” side of the quilt. The “rag” part never quit worked out the way I had seen it done by others, but I love it all the same.

  32. My first quilt was made for my grandson in red, white, and blue. It was pieced and had applique, too! An ambitious project for a beginner. I thought I was going to hand quilt it – hahaha. I used stencils and machine quilted it. He was about 7 or 8 at the time. He’ll be 21 in February! Thank you for an opportunity to win such a generous give-away.

  33. Awesome and Generous giveaway! My coworker helped me with my first quilt and I was hooked! It’s queen size, with a ‘rainbow effect’ of hand appliqued hearts. I also did hand quilting. I love that quilt and all that I learned.

Thanks for a chance to win. Happy Holidays!

  34. The first quilt I made was a rail fence quilt. I took a class at a local shop in 2010. It was a good experience. I think I’ll have to go look for it.

  35. I made my first quilt when I was in my 30’s. I sewed a bunch of squares together and, after layering backing, batting and . the top together, I tied it I didn’t have a clue as to how to quilt it. Thank you so much for your generous giveaway.

  36. My first quilt is still unfinished! It is only half quilted. My first finished quilt is simple squares of beautiful fabric, and lives on my bed.

  37. My first quilt, haha, it was zig zag appliquing dresden plates onto a sheet and then quilting by tying it-a very long time ago!! Quilting has came so far:-)

  38. My first quilt was a small wallhanging I made for Halloween. It’s not great and I can see where I could have done things differently by I am proud of it and still hang it up and love it!

  39. My first quilt was a log cabin baby quilt for my first baby. It was made of little florals and mini-check gingham. Several years later I let someone learning to sew borrow it as they making one like it and never got it back.

  40. Looks like a fabulous collection of fabrics. My first quilt was a baby quilt made with polyester fabrics backed with flannel–didn’t know any better then…the mom and baby liked it and used it.

  41. My first quilt was a Trip Around the World and I learned very quickly the importance of 1/4″ seam. I tied the quilt with yarn and the binding was awful. I have come a long way in the last 12 years. Thanks for another wonderful giveaway.

  42. I first quilt was 12 inch squares of fabric that I pieced together. Then I barely quilted it. We still have it and use it for a picnic quilt.

  43. my first quilt was made out of 4″ squares I cut from all of my mom’s sewing scraps. I still have it!

  44. My very first quilt was embroidered blocks with a yellow sashing and border made for my first born a loooong time ago. The yellow was probably a poly blend and not very pretty.

  45. My first quilt was a rail fence pattern. Even after 15+ years I still use it everyday! Thanks for the chance to win!

  46. I still haven’t finished the first quilt I started: a purple and green sampler quilt. I don’t remember the first one I actually finished. I’ve made many a lot since then!

  47. My first quilt was when I was about 6 years old; I took a bunch of Mom’s scraps and sewed them together by hand and took them to the neighbor and tried to sell them for a nickel. When I was an adult, I took a quilting class and learned to piece and hand quilt.

  48. I made a rainbow HST quilt in my early 20s for my sister’s 3rd baby. I probably shouldn’t actually claim credit because I had A LOT of help from my Mom!

  49. my first quilt was at age 16. my grandma said she would make us a quilt from the scraps of fabric that had made up our wardrobe as young kids….but once my sister and I cut out the squares (with scissors and im sure all terrible) she said it was too much for her…so I made it. (definitely terrible, but treasured nonetheless!!!) thanks for the generous giveaway

  50. Thank you for the opportunity to win! I have never tried Sew Illustrated, but would welcome the chance to do so.

  51. My first quilt was a huge queen size pinwheel in purples and golds. I made it for my mom and it is still one of my favorite quilts.

  52. I never tried sewing illustration but would love to. Thanks for the chance!
    ap_lemos at yahoo dot com

  53. The first quilt I made was for a swap. It was a simple “all in one” style quilt (where you sew strips together right onto the layered backing and padding) and then bind it and done. It was all Cotton and Steel fabrics and turned out great (hard to fail with such a simple “pattern”).

  54. My first quilt was a flannel rag quilt that I loved. It was blue, green and yellow. I embroidered my name and the date and gave it to my husband’s aunt who was in hospice care. She was cold, so she was elated. I had no idea but wanted her to have warm hugs, so that is how I decided to give it to her.

  55. Which first quilt? I dabbled into quilting when in my teens making a crazy quilt style. Heart calligraphy for my Mom then as a young Mom a quilt for my son.
Fast forward to the 90s when I did a Santa wallhanging for my husband which kicked up my present day quilt addiction. LOL

Thank you for the chance and Merry Christmas!

  56. My first quilt was a log cabin. It was supposed to be a twin size but when all was said and done it was a huge queen size. I had to quilt that through my domestic sewing machine. That quilt has been well loved by my daughter whom I gave it to.

  57. Haven’t tried as yet, but when I get brave… If I win, I will definitely attempt a quilt using this technique. Love Aurifil thread. My first quilt was a sampler lap size quilt I made in quilting basics class from a wonderful teacher named Louise. I still use it.

  58. I made my first quilt in college some 30 years ago and did not pick up quilting again until last year. Wish I had continued back then. Anyway the quilt was a red, white & blue courthouse step. Unfortunately, my ex-husband has it now & won’t give it back!

  59. My first quilt was a patchwork one, and my MIL coached me through the process long distance. It’s still my favorite quilt.

  60. My very first quilt was years in the making. It was simple cotton print squares sewed together – maybe 4 inch squares. Every so often I would applique onto a square, or add embroidery to a square, and I think I added lace trim here and there as well. I wish I had kept it.

  61. My first quilt was 25 years ago! I made a king size log cabin, Quilt in a Day pattern. THen I tried to quilt it on my Bernina, ugg. Not a pretty quilting job, but I loved that quilt! Thanks for the giveaway.

  62. I took a class in the mid 90s and made a quilt top with low end fabrics. Abandoned it when I couldn’t quilt it with my walking foot. Got hooked on quilting again in 2013. Brought it out and finished it in 2015 with FMQ on my Juki. Discovered that it had more to do with a finicky walking foot than my skill;-) The quilt was donated to our local VA hospital’s long term patient ward. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  63. Karen Thurn here. I was 16 when I made my first quilt. I sandwiched a nylon stocking between two squares of fabric tying it together with yarn. Money was tight and there was no extra money for batting. To get enough nylons for my full size quilt, I put an ad in our rural electric magazine and received enough more than enough stockings as well as jewelry, love notes, and a proposal of marriage which I did not accept. I finished that quilt and used it for many years. It was heavy and warm but required constant mending. Finally I made the decision for its future. I wrote this story May 4th, 2016 on my blog Tu-Na Quilts, Travels, and Eats and called it My first Quilt…just in case you are curious as to what I did with it.

By the way: Did you mean to keep this giveaway open for 6 months as it says you’ll pick a winner on Sunday, July 31st?

  64. My very first quilt was a baby quilt. I took it to work to show my coworkers and one of them bought it for her new grandchild!

  65. I am brand new to quilting and haven’t made a quilt yet. I just started English paper piecing last month and do have a lot of hexies to my credit! Now I just need to make them into something!

  66. My first quilt was done in conjuction with a beginner hand quilting class. My fabric choice stunk….but it was back in the early 90’s. I had black and white polka dots along with purple flowered fabric…..Oh my!! Now I look at it and chuckle….and it has it’s place in my office!!

  67. My first quilt was a Tula Pink, Saltwater Anchor, my daughter is sleeping underneath it right now and Yes I love Sewing Illustrated.

  68. I have never tried illustration with threads or quilting…..but am always willing to try something new!!

  69. I’ve never tried sew illustration. I’ve been quilting for at least 20 years–my first was a quilted pillow.

  70. It’s hard for me to remember what my first quilt was. One of my earlier ones I made for my son and it’s full of problems, but he loves it. I used “windows” around some knight fabric to make him a knight quilt. It’s fun to see how far along I’ve come.

  71. My first quilt was a sampler put together during a class. Looked awesome until I washed it and had some red bleeding into the white fabric. Got some RIT color remover and let it soak in the washer for awhile. Only to take it out and have ALL the color removed! There were small pockets of fabric that didn’t touch the water for some reason and those still have all the color on them!

  72. No, I’ve never tried sewing illustration. My first quilt was a doll quilt. Thank you for the great giveaway!

  73. My first quilt was a baby quilt for my first daughter. I used just Ohio Star blocks, mitered the corners for the borders and hand quilted and hand bound it. I haven’t hand quilted since 😉

  74. My first quilt was a twin sized quilt for our oldest daughter. It was yellow and green 4 inch squares with 114 little pictures embroidered on the green squares.

  75. thanks for the wonderful giveaway !! I tried illustration once but used my FMQ foot and it didn’t work very well !! I’d love to try Minki Kim’s way 🙂

  76. I have done a little sew illustrating – I think it would be called that – I stitched the shape of a caravan on a linen teatowel freehand sewing – a friend calls it scribbling with thread – it does not have to be exactly straight sewing more like scribbling. I enjoyed that – I also did a Pirate ship – a big 5 sail galleon free stitching all the gunnels and portholes and rigging with applique sails. I really enjoyed it and I would love to learn more about the technique.

  77. My first quilt about 35 years ago was a log cabin pieced with poly/cotton rosebud prints. The backing was pre-quilted rosebuds. I tied it with embroidery floss because I didn’t have any idea of how to quilt.

  78. My 1st quilt was for my oldest son when he was just a baby. I remember sitting outside playing with him and quilting while he napped!

  79. The very first quilt I worked on was in a class, back when we used scissors and templates. I never finished it. But the one I did finish was made using Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day Log Cabin pattern. Loved the blue and white fabric with a red hearth for the center. Thanks for the generous giveaway!

  80. my frist quilt was a min i group block exchange with Sisters Choice blocks. We got to arrange the top however we wanted and I machine quilted it!

  81. It says to tell you about my first quilt. I’m not sure you actually want to hear 🙁 My first three quilts remain unfinished. I did a lot of work and then decided I didn’t like the colors. At all. I guess I shouldn’t have used scraps, and should have gone and spent the extra money on fabric I did like. That is what I am going to do from now on 🙂

    emmaka(at)computermail(dot)net

  82. The first quilt I made was a baby crib quilt. I made it for my baby brother. It was well used.

  83. My first quilt was a wall hanging of a Christmas tree with 8 pointed stars. I had experience sewing clothes so I just jumped right in! It’s not terribly well done, but I still have it and it started me on a fun and exciting journey to become a quilt maker.

  84. I have not tried sewing illustration. This book looks intriguing though, like it might be a fun thing to learn.

  85. Really wonderful giveaways! I have done small pieced items, and finally decided it was time to make a quilt. I’m doing it in red and white and am doing an Irish chain design.

  86. First Quilt completed was my Aunt Shirley’s “Five Easy Pieces”. I traced her templates onto freezer paper and cut for the first time w/a rotary cutter, thru 4 Fat Quarters at once, 9 in all. Thank you!

  87. I made my first quilt when I was leaving for college in 1978. It was made of 12 inch squares and not very well made (but I loved it to rags!)

  88. I haven’t tried sewing illustrating, but this book has been on my to get ASAP list for a few months! I love Zakka style and enjoy Minki’s work!

  89. My first quilt top I say that because I don’t believe I ever finished it was a 2″ hexagon English paper pieced it was a star center using all the scraps from Mum and my grandmothers

  90. My very first quilt was a cross stitch embroidered quilt for my Betsy McCall doll. I was probably 9 years old. I was so proud of all my stitches!

  91. I have not tried sewing illustration, I have seen it though and it is beautiful. I will try it when I have gotten a little better with FMQ. Thank you for the opportunity to win some of your great products.

  92. Have never heard of Sew Illustration but now I’m intrigued thank you for the giveaway Aurifil is so generous I just love the thread and the company!

  93. My first quilt was a Marsha McCloskey block repeat. I cut it out with scissors and bought all my fabric at JoAnnes! It ended up being sewn directly onto another comforter and then bound over the top.:) Thanks for a great chance to win!

  94. My first “real” quilt was made about 20 years ago for my daughter and was an Irish Chain. Just recently she asked if I would mend it for her. After looking at it, I realized it would be easier to make her a new one but, she wanted the old one so of course I had to refurbish it for her. She was happy!!!

  95. My first quilt was made for my nephew when he was born. It was a stamped cross stitch top that my mom had started before she passed away unexpectedly. I finished the cross stitch and then quilted it and had it done when he was born That started a long fun journey that is still going strong 24 years later!

  96. My first quilt was about 3 years ago following Christa Watson’s Charming Chevrons QAL. Thanks for the giveaway!

  97. My first quilt was a large cross stitch quilt covered in bears. It was a crib size quilt, with a floral back. I loved that backing at the time, but would likely change it out now to something more suited for a child.

  98. I’m a fairly new quilter, so far I have only made a mini quilt. It was basic pieced squares. I have made some potholders. I plan on making a lap quilt soon, I’m not sure what kind yet. Have a great day, and thank you for an awesome giveaway.

  99. I made a baby rag quilt and it turned out ok so I thought let’s see where this venture takes me. I am having a blast learning and expanding my learning curve but have a long way to go.

  100. MY first quilt was a patchwork wall hanging that I hand quilted. I remember quilting on it one night while my sister was in the hospital giving birth to my nephew….so that would have been 25 years ago. Thanks for the chance to win.

  101. My first quilt was made with corduroy squares, tied with yarn, and backed with a sheet. It belongs to my dog now, and she enjoys it. Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

  102. My very first quilt had to be whole cloth Care Bear quilts x3 (I had a set of triplets 31 yrs ago). Thanks for the fantastic giveaway.

  103. I took a class at a local quilt shop after seeing it advertised during a shop hop. I had not sewed since high school. After seeing the fabric during the shop hop I was bitten that first class woke up a sleeping desire to know all there was to learn about quilting and techniques.

  104. My first quilt was nine-patch squares of up-cycled corduroy pants. My highschool sweetheart gave them to me cause he knew I liked “making stuff” . that quilt might be the reason he married me 8 years later….

  105. My first quilt was hearts appliquéd on white squares. Very simple. Thank you for a chance to win.

  106. I have never tried sewing illustration it sounds interesting I will have to put it on my To Do List!

  107. I have done or tried a little (little) bit of sewing illustration, but it’s not something I’m particularly comfortable with! I definitely need more practice and maybe some advice, since i just kind of winged it when I tried.

  108. My first quilt was all done by hand and it took 3 months to finish. I made it for my first grandchild before she was conceived. Thank you for an amazing giveaway.

  109. I guess my very first quilt was made with help from my grandmother when I was in my late 20’s. She showed me how to piece, sandwich, and hand quilt. However, I was so busy raising kids and being poor that I didn’t pursue it for 20 years or so. Now I’m in my sewing area, for a little while, working on a quilt almost every day.

  110. My very first quilt was a 9 patch made out of corduroy when I was in high school…..many, many years ago. I tied it with yarn instead of quilting it.

  111. My first quilt was a small trip around the world. I used a ruler to mark the fabric and cut it out with scissors, and quilted by hand. Eighteen years later it was finished!

  112. My very first quilt was a round robin quilt that I made with my 3 sisters. This was in 2007. We’ve been making joint quilts, doing block exchanges & more round robins ever since. We live in 4 different states and quilting keeps us connected. Thanks.

  113. 6 years ago I was pregnant and wanted to make a baby quilt. I failed. I made the blocks but didn’t realize my pressure foot was larger than 1/4 inch. So none of the blocks matched up. I still have the top but I can’t bear to put anymore work into it.

  114. My first quilt was a memory quilt for my mother. I printed family photos on fabric and used the photos in the center of nine-patch blocks.

  115. Yes, I have used sewing illustration and thread sketching for a few small quilts inspired by some of my vacation photos.

  116. I made my first quilt back in the 70’s using a pattern. It was a large star fused onto the center square using Stitch Witchery and zigzagged on. At that time Wonder Under wasn’t yet available. The quilt was full sized. The fabrics basically red white and blue. I still have it. The blue is greatly faded in spots but it will still keep you warm.

  117. It was a nine patch wall quilt made with floral fabric. I made it by hand. It was full of mistakes, but I was so proud that I had actually made a quilt!!

  118. My first quilt was a kitty cat lap quilt that I made some 20+ years ago and I still have it and use it. It was also my first attempt at FMQ but I am sure I didn’t know what that was then. I was just trying to sew around some of the small kitties in the quilt.

    tushay3 (at) yahoo (dot) com

  119. My very first quilt was made in high school. It was teal and purple, and pretty dark. I think I was grateful when one of our dogs eventually ate it. 😀
My quilts have gotten better. Lol!

  120. My first quilt. I had never made one, and had just discovered “charm squares” by Moda in a little shop in Fredericksburg, TX. I decided to make a small quilt. I bought all the necessary supplies, and a couple of books, and just tackled it. I fell in love! Then I discovered sewing blogs on line (this was 2008) and I was hooked forever. Thanks to all the blogs for teaching me so much over the years!!!

  121. I’m over 60 and I learned to quilt as a wee little thing from my Grandmother so I really don’t remember the first quilt I made. I’m sure she had me cut squares and sew them together on her treadle machine.

  122. My first quilt was a double nine patch using three fabrics – cream background with a red fabric and a multicolored fabric in the blocks.

  123. Thank you for the fantastic international give away! I haven’t tried sewing/thread illustrating but surely want to! I would love to win this book and threads! x Teje

  124. My very first quilt was made as a wedding quilt for my sister, over 45 years ago (!!)…
I sewed a lot… but only clothing. I had never, ever quilted before, but for some reason, I had a picture in my mind (my own design) of a quilt made of my sister’s favorite colors! The selection of fabrics back then was *nothing* like we have today!!… It took a long time and a LOT of searching to find just the right colors and fabrics! It was not done in time for their June wedding, but I did give it to them before their first Christmas! (I did enter it in the local county fair that fall… And was delighted to have won!!!)
    (I really liked that quilt!)

  125. My first quilt was a rail fence from Quilts! Quilts! Quilts! I was a teenager and had no idea what binding was, but I was hooked! 21 years later I still love the feel of fabric!

  126. My first quilt was a project for my Mass Production Class in college: the teacher said that a quilt was like mass production in manufacturing clothing. Well, it never as finished!! But my next quilt, for my daughter, made a number of years later, was finished and used. 🙂

  127. I was pregnant with my first child and decided he needed a quilt. My Grandma and her Momma were both quilters, and so I wanted to learn too. But Grandma lived too far away to teach me. So I got every book I could on quilting at the library and taught myself. That first quilt is quite a laugh. Seams don’t match and there is such puffiness and puckers in the quilting. But it kept my first son warm, and I still have it…23 yrs later. Thanks for a great giveaway and Merry Christmas!

  128. My first quilt was a snail’s trail wall hanging, not very pretty fabrics, but paper pieced. I was hooked and branched out widely from there. I am attempting to use up all my old thread and replace each color with Aurifil as I empty my spools. My machine and I like Aurifil best!

  129. My first quilt was a rail fence for my husband. That was close to 30 years ago. The quilt still exists, though very tattered from time, fuselage and beginners technique.

  130. My first quilt was made in 1976 when I took my first quilting class during America’s Bicentennial celebration. It was machine pieced squares in 2 colors in a grid pattern and I tacked it with yarn. I gave this quilt to my mom and recently got it back when she passed away. It’s both sad and touching to see that first effort compared to quilts I now make…either hand-quilted or machine quilted on my longarm. I love Aurifil thread….thank you for a chance to win.

  131. I made my first quilt two years ago. It was made for my granddaughters’ bed when they were 4 and 2. They were moving out of town and I wanted them to have something their Nona had made just for them. It was an eye-opening experience! The top was not that difficult, but trying to create the backing and then handsewing the binding on for 5 hours straight a couple of days before Christmas nearly wore me out. I’m almost finished with my second quilt. The backing stalled me again! Thanks for the chance.

  132. I have never tried this kind of sewing before but would love to have a go, the book would be a wonderful guide. x

  133. My first quilt I was afraid to do my first cut for fear of ruining it. Then after it was completed I was hooked! Thanks for the chance to win such a great prize!

  134. My first quilt should have been called Let’s Wing It or I Have No Idea What I Am Doing. Not pretty. It was a tie off quilt so I did not even actually quilt it. I shudder at the whole experience.

  135. I tried a rail fence quilt for my first quilt. It was terrible and took my five years to finish. I didn’t understand how important a quarter inch seam allowance was. All of my blocks were different sizes. It was such a mess that I decided not to give it to the person that I was making it for. However, it has become a loved blanket in my house. I sit on the couch right now covered up in it looking at its many flaws. I am glad that I kept it.

  136. My very first quilt was a baby quilt for my niece. It had a sleeping bear on it and was applique. I still have that pattern 30 plus years later.

  137. Such beautiful colors in fa bricks & thread. Thanks for the chance to win, I have a few spools and love working with them!

  138. my first quilt … i still use it today … i gathered some fabrics and started cutting out bugs …. beetles to be exact … i had no plan and just sort of worked it out as i went … i ended up as my lap quilt with 29 beetles and 1 spider in the middle becuz as you know insects have 6 legs and spiders have 8 legs, i just had to put that spider in to see if people would notice … in 10 years no one has so sometimes i point it out

  139. My first quilt was made with a French General jelly roll. My daughter has it lying on the back of her couch. I was hooked on quilting half way through this quilt.

  140. My first quilt was a salmon themed Seminole quilt made in a class at my local quilt store. The piecing was complex and I had never used a rotary cutter, didn’t know what a quarter inch seam was, had absolutely no idea how to quilt or attach a binding. However, I finished it and I am snuggled up under it 23 years later.

  141. Eek! I’ve never made a complete quilt! I have been making quilt blocks, enjoying learning and trying different blocks, but haven’t taken the leap of putting them together!

  142. I’ve been drooling over the projects I’ve seen using sewing illustration, but haven’t gotten up the gumption yet to try it! I’d love to read Minki’s book!

  143. My very first quilt was a whole cloth quilt, lap size, that I made for my husband. It was January 2015, he was away at training, and I spent so much time trying to get that thing finished! I used Packers flannel, and he uses it every night when he sleeps!

  144. My very first quilt was a doll quilt for my daughter’s American Girl doll. She had Felicity who was from the Revolutionary War period. I got a book from the library to get my pattern and learn about piecing a quilt. I went to my LQS to get advice on handquilting it. And I have never looked back. I still have the quilt and I’m pretty sure I still have some of the fabrics I used in my stash!

  145. I went to a beginner’s quilting class to learn the basics and to make my first quilt. I still have that quilt and I look at it every now and then. I do believe I have come a long ways after looking at that quilt. I cannot believe the 3 colors that I picked out. What every was I thinking about matching colors? This is mine and I truly believe that I have the ugliest quilt I have ever seen. Thank you for being a part of the SMS Giveaway and your generousity is simply overwhelming. WOW! To win this package I would be screaming and doing the Happy Dance like a crazy woman. Wishing you Happy Holidays.

  146. My first quilt was made using scissors and plastic templates. I chose a focus fabric and built around it – greens, pink, and blues. It was a sampler quilt.

  147. My first quilt was a patch work quilt made with my sister using all scraps from my mother sewing (she was a seamstress) way back in 1970’s. The first real quilt was in 1994 when I made a quilt for a friend for a wedding present. He sent me a picture recently and its in great condition.

  148. My first quilt was a sampler that was taught by the extension agent. Have been going strong ever since!

  149. My very first quilt was the 2012 Craftsy Block of the Month quilt. It got me hooked and I haven’t looked back.

  150. My very first quilt was a very small handsewn patchwork quilt for my cat (I was about 8!). I wish I could say that I’ve come a long way since then, but the truth is I am still working on my first adult patchwork quilt, and have been for a few years!

  151. My first couple of quilts were whole cloth, tied, and still have them today oh so sad but so comfortable.

  152. I have not tried “Sew Illustrated” yet. I have seen several projects completed, based on the book and have the book on my wish list!

  153. Over 40 years ago my mother and I made 4 patch quilt out of old dress fabrics. Unfortunately, after several washing it fell apart as we knew nothing of the quilting process…but the time I got to spend doing the project with her has lasted much much longer.

  154. I only began “real” quilting 2 years ago when my son Tim passed. I make charity throws and kennel quilts to donate in his honor/memory:) I learn something new every day!

  155. My very first quilt, that I would actually call a quilt,. Because for a long time I didn’t know that quilting was not the same as sewing, was an applique quilt.
I always watched the sewing shows on PBS. Lap quilting with Georgia Bonesteel showed an applique quilt ( which I had no idea what that was) from her retreat with the same friends every year,
The quilt was called ( I’m so embarrassed I can’t remember the entire name) but it was Freedom…
I was so intreeged (?) with it I just kinda made it up as I went along.
Maybe that’s why I have such a fondness for applique.
And no I never finished the quilt
Thanks for the chance to win such a generous prize

  156. My first quilt was made 4 years ago and was a present for my son. He really liked it and appreciated the work that went into it.

  157. There were no rotary cutters or mats when I made my first quilt. I drew patterns on cereal boxes and cut everything out with scissors. yuk

  158. I have several first quilts. The first one I finished was using a Quilts for Kids kit – and Leah Day’s tips for FMQing. I found that was a wonderful way to practice and do my best to come up with a great donation. The first one I started cutting and piecing in 1992 but it wasn’t finished until November 2009. That one I tied down with the help of the same adult ed quilting teacher! These are beautiful selections for the giveaway. Thanks for the chances!

  159. My very first quilt was relatively recently. It was a circle in a square raw edge applique that was supposed to be an easy beginner quilt. It too me several years to finish it! Many thanks for the lovely giveaways!

  160. I haven’t tried Sewing Illustration the way Minki does it, only tried to write a name on a little pouch I made last year for DIL. I didn’t think to use different weights of thread so just sewed the same name several times sort of on top of each other. I’m sure I’d get a better result with 12 wt thread though! Thanks for putting my name in the hat for the drawings!

  161. My very first quilt was a baby quilt for my cousin’s daughter. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into and choose a quilt pattern that was made from over 180 HSTs! I wasn’t sure I liked sewing anymore by the time I’d finished trimming all of those!

  162. I have done a lot of sewing but have never tried using sewing illustrations but will definitely try it in future as it’s brilliant. Thank you for an amazing giveaway and I would like to wish you all the best during the festive season.

  163. My very first quilt that I owned, that I remember was a large scrap quilt that my great grandmothers on my mom’s side of the family had made. One pieced it and the other quilted it. I was about 8 years old and took that quilt on all our summer vacations and wrapped up in it on the couch and in my bed. I barely remember what it looked like, but I remember very well how it felt. That quilt was loved till it wore out!

  164. My very first quilt was part of a quilt. My mom planned an anniversary quilt for her parents and everyone who could sew (or was willing to learn) took a part. I designed the barn behind the house Grandma and Grandpa lived in when I was a child. The fabrics were ones from the 60s that my other Grandma had made us all clothes from. Mom embroidered the windows on the barn, but I designed that, too.

It made me realize I could make a quilt on my own, so a few years later I made my first one on my own for a friend’s baby.

  165. My first quilt was made for a dear friends baby – definitely not perfect (HSTs galore) but was made with lots of love!

  166. My very first quilt was a simple 9-patch..baby sized! 🙂 Was pretty good..& stitched in the ditch to “quilt” it… :/
Thank you for chance to win your Give-a-way too! 😀

  167. My favorite quilt block will always be the Nine Patch. When I was ten years old in the 1962, I asked all my neighbors for fabric and my mom taught me to hand sew a Nine Patch Block. Mom helped me put all the blocks together and Dad built a quilt frame. The best part is the whole family helped quilt, including my 2 older brothers. Lots of sore fingers later, we had a finished quilt and the best part is that I still have it today. Good memories!!

  168. my first quilt was a stripy lap quilt from the book “Bend the Rules Sewing” It’s still my favorite.

  169. The first quilt that I ever worked on was years ago when my grandma had her big old quilt frame set up and I was allowed to help with the ties 🙂 The first quilt that I made is a scrappy block quilt in honor of my grandma!

  170. I started my first quilt at 10. I immediately put the sewing machine needle through my finger. Took about 25 years for me to try again. ;o)

  171. My hubby volunteered me to make one for my mother in law, and the only sewing I did at the time was costuming. It became a passion….

  172. My first quilt was a jeans quilt, it was yarn tied, and I folded the backing over to create the binding, which is like 3 inches wide. 😂

  173. Haven’t tried sewing illustration yet. In fact I’m awaiting shipment of Minki’s book………can’t wait to give my artistry a whirl.

  174. I tried a bit of Sewing Illustration but would love to try it again after reading the book! Thanks for the chance to win.

  175. The first quilt I ever worked on was a quilt the girls in my church youth group tied for one of our leaders that was having a baby. All I remember was the quilt had a lot of yellow gingham! This was probably sometime between 1971-1973.

  176. My mom is an amazing quilter. I mainly sew clothes and bags, but I want to get the courage to make a quilt.

  177. I made my first quilt in high school design and decorate class with the help of my teacher and my mom. It was a rewarding experience and helped me gain interest in this wonderful hobby!

  178. I made my first quilt 3 years ago, but have really started to love quilting this past year! It feels so great to create something!!
Thanks for the chance to win these beautiful benartex fabrics and aurifil thread!!

  179. My first quilt was in high school – an american flag for a class project. I never thought then that I’d be the quilter I am today!

  180. The first quilt I made was for my daughters 12th birthday. I used 3 Sisters fabrics and she loves it! It was just a simple quilt but I learned so much during the process!

  181. I’ve never tried sewing illustration, though some of the women at our local quilt shop are amazing at it!

  182. I have never tried sewing illustration. It sounds like something I’d like to master.
Thanks for the chance to win.

  183. My first quilt was really just a log cabin pillow. I did a group log cabin quilt in HS. A few years ago a good friend in my MOPS group had cancer and I did another group quilt then. I haven’t really ventured much into quilt making beyond that. I have dreams of making an I Spy quilt for my son who is almost 2.

  184. My first quilt was covered with primitive looking appliqué fish — I made it for my brother an avid fisherman. He still uses it, and it still makes me cringe every time I see it because it is UGLY, lol! 🙂

  185. My first quilt was Jo Morton mini quilts at a class in my LQS last year! This year I am doing the Sister Sampler block of the month at my LQS. thank you

  186. My first quilt was patriotic-themed for our oldest granddaughter. I presented it to her at her graduation from Marine Corp. boot camp. It was Flag of Valor by Minick and Simpson, and it turned out pretty well. Looking at it now, though, I can see LOTS of points that don’t match!

  187. My first quilt was a full size HST quilt for my youngest daughter. I did not even know what a rotary cutter was and used a regular ruler and yard stick. Let’s say I have learned a lot since then.

  188. What a wonderful giveaway! What could be better than winning an Aurifil bundle…well! a book along with it 🙂

  189. I would help my mom piece her quilts. My first “quilt” of my own was a fabric checkerboard I designed for a school project.

  190. My very first quilt was a shoe box quilt for the guild. Everything you need (fabric wise) is in the shoebox. The resulting quilt is given to a local charity. I joined the guild last Feb.

  191. My very first quilt was very late ’80’s with mauve and dusty blue and all by hand- no rotary cutters and templates! I’ve come a long way.
