My very first quilt I was in high school and it was all done by hand. I abandoned it before it was finished. When our kids were in grade school I joined up with a quilting group at church. So my first completed quilt was a baby quilt for the local crisis pregnancy center the church supports. It was all pastels and whites. All 41/2 inch squares.

My first quilt was a gift for my then three year old nephew, Billy. I babysat him every weekend for the first year of his life when his parents were working, so we were very close. I found a book of Irish Chain patterns, and made his with a print with football players, and red and blue coordinating solids. He kept that quilt on his bed for years, until it was too worn out It was well loved!

I was ‘strong armed’ in to making a quilt by my daughter. She was relentless until I finally gave in and said fine! Just to get her to stop, I never wanted to learn to quilt! My first quilt was a simple ‘queen’ size quilt make with squares. It was awful! Wonky, uneven, hideous fabrics! But, I was hooked on quilting by the time I finished it. That was over 10 years ago and I’m still obsessed with quilting!
My first quilt was a small wall hanging. I bought a kit, of 3 quarter yds. of fabric, a center design block and a pattern. I think it ended up as a 15 inch block, which I no longer have. I used a yard stick, I didn’t own or know about rotary cutters or mats and an old machine I borrowed from my mother, I had a great time. Then the bug got in me a hasn’t ever left. 😄 Toni Anne

My first quilt was a Lone Star wall hanging that I made in 1985. I machine pieced the top and then hand quilted it. I fell in love with the feeling of fabric becoming a quilt as I stitched it.
My very first quilt was a simple patchwork full-sized quilt made of shades of purple. It was all hand-cut with a blanket for batting and a sheet for the back. Yarn-tied too! I still have it 35 years later and it’s been on many family adventures.
I made my first quilt in high school and it would not be called a scrappy improve.

My first quilt was one using 10 in polyester squares sewed together randomly when I was about eight or so. I did it on my granny’s treadle machine. It weighed a ton after I got it done! 40+ years later I still have it & it is still in good condition.

My first quilt was a rag quilt and my Granddaughter made one with me.
My first quilt was churn dash blocks. There were no rotary cutters, I traced my pieces using cardboard templates. I hated the tracing and cutting. The quilt fabric just shredded over the years to expose the polyester batting inside. My quilts are much nicer now and I don’t need those awful cardboard templates and scissors!
My first quilt was a panel quilt made for my son. It has black bears on it. I made that over 25 years ago. It hasn’t withstood the test of time. I have asked my son to get rid of it. He says he will not, because it reminds him of me. Let me also add he requests a quilt for Christmas every year. 🙂

My first quilt was a baby quilt for my nephew (now 20 years old). It was a pinwheel quilt in bright primary colors and I had to tell my sister-in-law it was meant to be used. She wanted to put it away and save it so it wouldn’t get messed up!
My first quilt was a class that I took from a local quilter. It was a fun class with different blocks each week. I still have the quilt and I have to say that I was hooked on quilting after that class.
My first quilts were made as gifts for my sisters over 40 years ago.
My the first quilt was made on a whim and used upholstery fabric for sashing 🙂 I didn’t have a clue how to bind it so I just rolled the edges inside and top stitched it.
My first quilt was an alphabet quilt that I didn’t sash properly – it ended up all out of whack. I still have the unfinished, rolled up top folded into my stash – maybe some day I’ll fix it.

When I made my first quilt, I had no idea about quilting or making quilts at all. I had collected 125 hankies and began hand quilting 12″ x12″ blocks with them. I added a border and backing in a throw pillow style and tyed ribbons through each corner. Its not perfect, but I am proud of it just the same.
My very first quilt was made for my mother as she entered chemo for lung cancer. She loves crossword puzzles so I fashioned black & white squares in a crossword pattern. She’s cancer free now and still has the quilt draped over her sofa 😀

My first quilt was actually a holiday tree square quilt. I still pull it out each year though I smile at the simplicity of the quilting I did and the fact that I had no idea how to properly bind it so it has puckers along most of the edges. Thank you for a great giveaway!
My first quilt is still not finished, but I went big and bold! I had a ton of “ugly brown fat quarters” and I decided to put all of them together in a twin sized quilt. They actually look nice together, but I didn’t know how to quilt it, so it’s still a WIP! 😀
My first quilt was a wall hanging for fall. It was a bit wonky when finished and I still hang it in the autumn so I remember how far I have come with my quilting.
My first quilt is a rag quilt I made for myself when I was around 19 or 20. I used light blues, light yellows, and creams – all in flannel. Some of the fabric had designs like teddy bears in PJs. I hand quilted each block with stars, changing what color thread I used to compliment the “top” side of the quilt. The “rag” part never quit worked out the way I had seen it done by others, but I love it all the same.

My first quilt was made for my grandson in red, white, and blue. It was pieced and had applique, too! An ambitious project for a beginner. I thought I was going to hand quilt it – hahaha. I used stencils and machine quilted it. He was about 7 or 8 at the time. He’ll be 21 in February! Thank you for an opportunity to win such a generous give-away.
Awesome and Generous giveaway! My coworker helped me with my first quilt and I was hooked! It’s queen size, with a ‘rainbow effect’ of hand appliqued hearts. I also did hand quilting. I love that quilt and all that I learned.

The first quilt I made was a rail fence quilt. I took a class at a local shop in 2010. It was a good experience. I think I’ll have to go look for it.

My first quilt was when I was about 6 years old; I took a bunch of Mom’s scraps and sewed them together by hand and took them to the neighbor and tried to sell them for a nickel. When I was an adult, I took a quilting class and learned to piece and hand quilt.
I made a rainbow HST quilt in my early 20s for my sister’s 3rd baby. I probably shouldn’t actually claim credit because I had A LOT of help from my Mom!

The first quilt I made was for a swap. It was a simple “all in one” style quilt (where you sew strips together right onto the layered backing and padding) and then bind it and done. It was all Cotton and Steel fabrics and turned out great (hard to fail with such a simple “pattern”).
My first quilt was a flannel rag quilt that I loved. It was blue, green and yellow. I embroidered my name and the date and gave it to my husband’s aunt who was in hospice care. She was cold, so she was elated. I had no idea but wanted her to have warm hugs, so that is how I decided to give it to her.
I have not tried sewing illustration, but I have noticed it around and think it is a beautiful way to be creative.
Which first quilt? I dabbled into quilting when in my teens making a crazy quilt style. Heart calligraphy for my Mom then as a young Mom a quilt for my son.
Fast forward to the 90s when I did a Santa wallhanging for my husband which kicked up my present day quilt addiction. LOL

I took a class in the mid 90s and made a quilt top with low end fabrics. Abandoned it when I couldn’t quilt it with my walking foot. Got hooked on quilting again in 2013. Brought it out and finished it in 2015 with FMQ on my Juki. Discovered that it had more to do with a finicky walking foot than my skill;-) The quilt was donated to our local VA hospital’s long term patient ward. Thanks for the great giveaway!
Karen Thurn here. I was 16 when I made my first quilt. I sandwiched a nylon stocking between two squares of fabric tying it together with yarn. Money was tight and there was no extra money for batting. To get enough nylons for my full size quilt, I put an ad in our rural electric magazine and received enough more than enough stockings as well as jewelry, love notes, and a proposal of marriage which I did not accept. I finished that quilt and used it for many years. It was heavy and warm but required constant mending. Finally I made the decision for its future. I wrote this story May 4th, 2016 on my blog Tu-Na Quilts, Travels, and Eats and called it My first Quilt…just in case you are curious as to what I did with it.

It’s hard for me to remember what my first quilt was. One of my earlier ones I made for my son and it’s full of problems, but he loves it. I used “windows” around some knight fabric to make him a knight quilt. It’s fun to see how far along I’ve come.
My first quilt was a sampler put together during a class. Looked awesome until I washed it and had some red bleeding into the white fabric. Got some RIT color remover and let it soak in the washer for awhile. Only to take it out and have ALL the color removed! There were small pockets of fabric that didn’t touch the water for some reason and those still have all the color on them!

I have done a little sew illustrating – I think it would be called that – I stitched the shape of a caravan on a linen teatowel freehand sewing – a friend calls it scribbling with thread – it does not have to be exactly straight sewing more like scribbling. I enjoyed that – I also did a Pirate ship – a big 5 sail galleon free stitching all the gunnels and portholes and rigging with applique sails. I really enjoyed it and I would love to learn more about the technique.

My first quilt about 35 years ago was a log cabin pieced with poly/cotton rosebud prints. The backing was pre-quilted rosebuds. I tied it with embroidery floss because I didn’t have any idea of how to quilt.

My first quilt was a Marsha McCloskey block repeat. I cut it out with scissors and bought all my fabric at JoAnnes! It ended up being sewn directly onto another comforter and then bound over the top.:) Thanks for a great chance to win!

After looking at it, I realized it would be easier to make her a new one but, she wanted the old one so of course I had to refurbish it for her. She was happy!!!

My first quilt was a large cross stitch quilt covered in bears. It was a crib size quilt, with a floral back. I loved that backing at the time, but would likely change it out now to something more suited for a child.

6 years ago I was pregnant and wanted to make a baby quilt. I failed. I made the blocks but didn’t realize my pressure foot was larger than 1/4 inch. So none of the blocks matched up. I still have the top but I can’t bear to put anymore work into it.

Yes, I have used sewing illustration and thread sketching for a few small quilts inspired by some of my vacation photos.
I made my first quilt back in the 70’s using a pattern. It was a large star fused onto the center square using Stitch Witchery and zigzagged on. At that time Wonder Under wasn’t yet available. The quilt was full sized. The fabrics basically red white and blue. I still have it. The blue is greatly faded in spots but it will still keep you warm.
It was a nine patch wall quilt made with floral fabric. I made it by hand. It was full of mistakes, but I was so proud that I had actually made a quilt!!

I have tried sewing illustrations before, it can be challenging sometimes but the end result is worth it.
My first quilt. I had never made one, and had just discovered “charm squares” by Moda in a little shop in Fredericksburg, TX. I decided to make a small quilt. I bought all the necessary supplies, and a couple of books, and just tackled it. I fell in love! Then I discovered sewing blogs on line (this was 2008) and I was hooked forever. Thanks to all the blogs for teaching me so much over the years!!!

I’m over 60 and I learned to quilt as a wee little thing from my Grandmother so I really don’t remember the first quilt I made. I’m sure she had me cut squares and sew them together on her treadle machine.

I sewed a lot… but only clothing. I had never, ever quilted before, but for some reason, I had a picture in my mind (my own design) of a quilt made of my sister’s favorite colors! The selection of fabrics back then was *nothing* like we have today!!… It took a long time and a LOT of searching to find just the right colors and fabrics! It was not done in time for their June wedding, but I did give it to them before their first Christmas! (I did enter it in the local county fair that fall… And was delighted to have won!!!)

My first quilt was a project for my Mass Production Class in college: the teacher said that a quilt was like mass production in manufacturing clothing. Well, it never as finished!! But my next quilt, for my daughter, made a number of years later, was finished and used. 🙂

I was pregnant with my first child and decided he needed a quilt. My Grandma and her Momma were both quilters, and so I wanted to learn too. But Grandma lived too far away to teach me. So I got every book I could on quilting at the library and taught myself. That first quilt is quite a laugh. Seams don’t match and there is such puffiness and puckers in the quilting. But it kept my first son warm, and I still have it…23 yrs later. Thanks for a great giveaway and Merry Christmas!

My first quilt was a snail’s trail wall hanging, not very pretty fabrics, but paper pieced. I was hooked and branched out widely from there. I am attempting to use up all my old thread and replace each color with Aurifil as I empty my spools. My machine and I like Aurifil best!

My first quilt was made in 1976 when I took my first quilting class during America’s Bicentennial celebration. It was machine pieced squares in 2 colors in a grid pattern and I tacked it with yarn. I gave this quilt to my mom and recently got it back when she passed away. It’s both sad and touching to see that first effort compared to quilts I now make…either hand-quilted or machine quilted on my longarm. I love Aurifil thread….thank you for a chance to win.
I made my first quilt two years ago. It was made for my granddaughters’ bed when they were 4 and 2. They were moving out of town and I wanted them to have something their Nona had made just for them. It was an eye-opening experience! The top was not that difficult, but trying to create the backing and then handsewing the binding on for 5 hours straight a couple of days before Christmas nearly wore me out. I’m almost finished with my second quilt. The backing stalled me again! Thanks for the chance.

My first quilt should have been called Let’s Wing It or I Have No Idea What I Am Doing. Not pretty. It was a tie off quilt so I did not even actually quilt it. I shudder at the whole experience.
I tried a rail fence quilt for my first quilt. It was terrible and took my five years to finish. I didn’t understand how important a quarter inch seam allowance was. All of my blocks were different sizes. It was such a mess that I decided not to give it to the person that I was making it for. However, it has become a loved blanket in my house. I sit on the couch right now covered up in it looking at its many flaws. I am glad that I kept it.

my first quilt … i still use it today … i gathered some fabrics and started cutting out bugs …. beetles to be exact … i had no plan and just sort of worked it out as i went … i ended up as my lap quilt with 29 beetles and 1 spider in the middle becuz as you know insects have 6 legs and spiders have 8 legs, i just had to put that spider in to see if people would notice … in 10 years no one has so sometimes i point it out

My very first quilt was a whole cloth quilt, lap size, that I made for my husband. It was January 2015, he was away at training, and I spent so much time trying to get that thing finished! I used Packers flannel, and he uses it every night when he sleeps!
My very first quilt was a doll quilt for my daughter’s American Girl doll. She had Felicity who was from the Revolutionary War period. I got a book from the library to get my pattern and learn about piecing a quilt. I went to my LQS to get advice on handquilting it. And I have never looked back. I still have the quilt and I’m pretty sure I still have some of the fabrics I used in my stash!

I went to a beginner’s quilting class to learn the basics and to make my first quilt. I still have that quilt and I look at it every now and then. I do believe I have come a long ways after looking at that quilt. I cannot believe the 3 colors that I picked out. What every was I thinking about matching colors? Over 40 years ago my mother and I made 4 patch quilt out of old dress fabrics. Unfortunately, after several washing it fell apart as we knew nothing of the quilting process…but the time I got to spend doing the project with her has lasted much much longer.
Have not viewed or used Sew Illustrated but based on the publication name, it sounds very colorful and helpful.
I only began “real” quilting 2 years ago when my son Tim passed. I make charity throws and kennel quilts to donate in his honor/memory:) I learn something new every day!

My very first quilt, that I would actually call a quilt,. Because for a long time I didn’t know that quilting was not the same as sewing, was an applique quilt.
I always watched the sewing shows on PBS. Lap quilting with Georgia Bonesteel showed an applique quilt ( which I had no idea what that was) from her retreat with the same friends every year,
The quilt was called ( I’m so embarrassed I can’t remember the entire name) but it was Freedom…
I was so intreeged (?) with it I just kinda made it up as I went along.
Maybe that’s why I have such a fondness for applique.

I found that was a wonderful way to practice and do my best to come up with a great donation. The first one I started cutting and piecing in 1992 but it wasn’t finished until November 2009. I haven’t tried Sewing Illustration the way Minki does it, only tried to write a name on a little pouch I made last year for DIL. I didn’t think to use different weights of thread so just sewed the same name several times sort of on top of each other. I’m sure I’d get a better result with 12 wt thread though! My very first quilt was a baby quilt for my cousin’s daughter. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into and choose a quilt pattern that was made from over 180 HSTs! I wasn’t sure I liked sewing anymore by the time I’d finished trimming all of those!

My very first quilt that I owned, that I remember was a large scrap quilt that my great grandmothers on my mom’s side of the family had made. One pieced it and the other quilted it. I was about 8 years old and took that quilt on all our summer vacations and wrapped up in it on the couch and in my bed. I barely remember what it looked like, but I remember very well how it felt. That quilt was loved till it wore out!
My very first quilt was part of a quilt. My mom planned an anniversary quilt for her parents and everyone who could sew (or was willing to learn) took a part. I designed the barn behind the house Grandma and Grandpa lived in when I was a child. The fabrics were ones from the 60s that my other Grandma had made us all clothes from. Mom embroidered the windows on the barn, but I designed that, too.
It made me realize I could make a quilt on my own, so a few years later I made my first one on my own for a friend’s baby.

My favorite quilt block will always be the Nine Patch. When I was ten years old in the 1962, I asked all my neighbors for fabric and my mom taught me to hand sew a Nine Patch Block. Mom helped me put all the blocks together and Dad built a quilt frame. The best part is the whole family helped quilt, including my 2 older brothers. Lots of sore fingers later, we had a finished quilt and the best part is that I still have it today. Good memories!!
