Moda Mondays: True Blue by Brigitte Heitland

Happy Monday!! We’re getting some lovely Spring weather today… and sunshine, lots of SUNSHINE! Here’s hoping you’re getting some in your part of the world as well;). We’re in our second week of Moda Mondays, a super fun series designed to showcase a stunning lineup of thread collections by our treasured Moda Designers. Check in here every Monday to learn more!

True Blue by Brigitte Heitland (Zen Chic) captures all the different hues that we love about jeans: from white over a pastel washed-out blue, powder blue, and classic indigo to darker tones like night blue and nearly black. Modern reminiscences of Dutch Delft tiles make for beautiful large floral prints. Combined with medium scale coordinates, partly geometric, partly organic and small-scale blenders Zen Chic’s brand new collection offers everything a quilter’s heart or a denim lover can long for.

Brigitte’s coordinating thread collection is timeless and versatile featuring 50wt threads in shades of blue with pops of gold and yellow.

THE INTERVIEW
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first got started in the world of sewing and quilting?
Sewing was always a passion of mine, I learned it as a six year old child. But growing up in Germany, I didn’t learn about quilting before I got to be about 40 years old. By that time I stumbled upon a book of Kaffe Fassett and was fascinated. I had to give it a try and have been hooked ever since.

Do you remember the process of making your first quilt and how you felt once it was complete?
My first quilt was a simple windmill quilt with cotton fabrics I bought at the shop around the corner (no, they weren’t beautiful or fancy at all, not even quilt fabrics). I loved the process and working very accurately is always something I like to do. I was proud of my first little table runner, gave it to my mum, who still displays it on a little coffee table.

Who or what has been your greatest creative inspiration?
Interior design – it’s my huge love and will always be. All kinds of things I can find in a beautifully styled room (especially the Scandinavian ones): the color schemes, patterns of carpets, tapestry, porcelain, vases, modern art – strolling through modern styled interior design magazines is my personal heaven.

How did you first connect with Moda and what do you love most about working with them?
We found each other 2011 at international Quilt Market in Salt Lake City. This was the Market I debuted – I had no name, no blog, no book, nobody knew me. I have never been there before. I just believed in my dream, bought a flight ticket, booked a booth and showed up. Fate placed me and my booth next to Moda, they liked my style and offered to work with me.

I couldn’t believe it – for me it was like winning the lottery. Since then we released 13 collections, and more are on their way. It is just fantastic to work with a leading fabric manufacturer in this industry – it has opened so many doors for me: most important – I can share my passion and my talent with those people in the world who have the same interests. I can live my dream of designing and creating. I travel internationally for my business and see so many new parts of the world, I can teach and get to know so many talented people. Moda is like a family for me. Everybody including the leaders takes care for the people in the team – if someone gets seriously sick, there is so much loving support. The climate between the designers is not at all competitive, but rather very friendly and supportive. It is a wonderful company to work with, indeed!

What did you love most about putting your latest collection, True Blue, together for them? What inspired the collection?
The collection was inspired by denim-style. Denim is a timeless fashion, always trendy, but these days it is also a hot trend in quilting. Making quilts or bags with recycled jeans or with fabrics which match this style is just cool. True Blue is a companion to denim is quilting quality: It matches the complete color range from washed out jeans over regular blue jeans over dark blue to black. It gives you large scale floral prints to make skirts or bags or borders and backings for quilts; it gives you medium scale geometrics – hey a shirt of the circle print would look good on a man! And small scale blenders which fit well in any shop to blend in with other collections.

Do you have a favorite project made with the collection?
Oh yes, the wall quilt Globe is an absolute stunner. When I designed this quilt pattern I first hesitated to go for it: it needs paper piecing and Y-seams and I was not sure if people would be willing to take this effort. So I gave it a try with a smaller print run – and boom – it became the bestseller of this series and booklet patterns are meanwhile sold out (only PDFs available).

What is your favorite thing to make?
Piecing. Piecing patches together, may it be for a bag or a quilt, is still my favorite part of the sewing process. Or a garment like a dress or a skirt.

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
It was pretty soon when I stepped into the industry, that Aurifil came to my attention. Actually it was even before I started my business that I read the raving comments on all kinds of blogs and get curious about that name I hadn’t heard of so far. People praised the beautiful colors and the fiber quality, said „this is my  favorite thread“. So quite from the beginning on I bought that brand at my distributor and I have to say – they didn’t disappoint. I use them for piecing as well as for my long arm quilting business and the quality is superb: There is a certain shimmer which shows on the sewing surface, I like that. And of course the beautiful large color range.

Do you have a favorite color/weight and why?
My favorite color is light grey 50WT – not because this is fancy. Just because I can’t live without that versatile hue which matches every project and has the perfect weight for piecing.

True Blue Pillow

How did you go about selecting threads for your latest Aurifil collection, True Blue?
When I select the thread color assortment matching one of my collections I try to step into the shoes of the quilter: She needs lights and darks and mediums – so I pick those according to my fabric colors. But she might also need an accent color to enhance the project with some seams (e.g. topstitching on bags or so). Therefore I added the accents mustard and ochre to the blues. And then I think of the quilting process – I added variegated threads for the quilt surface. Can you imagine a solid backing with the quilting motive in a multicolored thread – this is especially cool.

What top thread tip would you want to share with our readers?
It is more a practical tip – spoil yourself with a good thread spool organizer, maybe a box or a rack where you can display the spools well sorted.

It is not only eye candy – it is so much more fun, if you see, what you have and find it easily.

Where can we find you this year?
You will find me at Pour l’Amour du Fil in France (Nantes, April) and at International Quilt Market in St. Louis in May. And I will travel a lot throughout Europe to teach classes.

ABOUT BRIGITTE
WebsiteBlogFacebookInstagramPinterest — YouTube — Twitter

Brigitte Heitland was born in Germany and grew up with her three siblings. They were a funny “gang” and her grandma sewed a lot of clothes for the children. Brigitte often sat down next to her old PFAFF and felt so comfortable. Her grandma once told her: When you are tall enough to get your feet down to the pedal, I’ll teach you sewing too. It was, perhaps, one of the best things that anyone could have given her.

Brigitte started sewing at the age of six, mostly clothes, and loved to have unique things to wear. When it was time to choose a profession, she knew it would be something creative.  She decided upon Interior Design but was drawn to all of the students in the room next to her working with needles and thread and so she ended up as a student of Textile Design.

In her mid age, it happened that she stumbled upon a wonderful pictured quilting book and was hooked at once. She had to try it herself and became hopelessly addicted to patchwork. Of course, she needed fabrics, lots and lots of different fabrics to dive in. She started her own little online shop with quilting fabrics and eventually worked to create her own collection. It led to her roots in Interior Design: when developing a fabric or even a design for a quilt the entire impression of a room was considered. She sees the light, the furniture, the color concept, the style and her quilts become a natural element of this scene, fitting in harmoniously. Brigitte loves having clarity in a room, an environment of simplicity where you are surrounded by only the things you really need and love, where you can relax, find your inner peace and balance. Her quilts are take on this concept, reduced, pure, and clear.

  3. I guess my style is mostly traditional. I have made modern quilts, and made a 3 colors quilt with a reproduction background, a Jinny Beyer print, and a batik-and I love it.

  4. I love all of Brigitte’s patterns – they are so refreshing! I guess I’m always looking for something in a new style but not too modern!

  5. Hi, I’m a traditonalist; loving the old blocks like Log Cabin and Bear’s Claw! “True Blue” is such a beautiful collection! Thank you for a beautiful giveaway!

  6. I just started quilting last year-so far I am doing traditional quilts right now-but oh, I can’t wait to get good enough to try all different styles! Thank you, Susan

  7. My style is bright and fun. And I just used most of my blue making a quilt for my nephew for his graduation

  8. I’ve always considered my style to be classic with a twist. A classic item done in brights or in unexpected fabrics, like Halloween. Or a classic item/fabric with something unexpected beside it.

  9. I like a modern, clean “zen” to my quilts, but enjoy placing some traditional elements within. The blues in this line have been calling my name and are not available locally. I’d sure love to be able to play with them.

  10. Gorgeous fabric & threads! I would say my design style is mostly traditional, but I do like all different styles.

  11. I am mostly a traditional quilter, but I do like some of the modern quilts that I see. They seem to be growing on me!

  12. My style is pretty much cluttered farmhouse, if I’m being honest–I like warm tones, and lots of colors and input. I admire spare lines and sleek looks, but that’s not me. My home, my quilts, and my life–all are very full. My challenge and my joy is curating.

  13. My design style with quilting is traditional designs but with bright, modern fabric colors and patterns.

  14. Quilting style…. A little bit of everything! From modern to reproduction to scrappy to just fun! Variety is the spice of life!

  15. I like quilts with clean, modern lines. Our style at home is pretty much the same. Love the Zen Chic style and quilts!

  16. My style is a combination of traditional and modern Japanese. Love this new line of fabric and threads!

  17. I’d have to say eclectic. I like it all! One week I am smitten with Civil War era fabrics, and the next I can’t get enough of solids. But Zen Chic fabrics is my fav Moda designer!

  18. traditional and homey is my style.
what a wonderful interview. I love how all the designers look out for each other and there is no back biting and no hurtful compation.

  19. I guess I should know what my style is, but I don’t really. My style is what is attractive and comfortable to me. I love this line from Zen Chic! Thanks for the giveaway!

  20. My style is traditional. My home is decorated in Country /Primitive. These fabrics would be wonderful for my Granddaughter who is graduating from high school this spring. Blue is her favorite color.

  21. True Blue is a GREAT denim-inspired collection. The Zen Chic style certainly follows my own thoughts too. Thanks for putting this together for all of us!

  22. I have mostly sewn traditional quilts but have begun to see modern quilt patterns that I like.

  23. I would love to do my entire house in shades of blue with gray and while as accents. I just love this color and find it fresh and modern as well as traditional!

  24. I love the combination of the gold threads with the blue. I also love the ‘bowls’ quilt. Very Cute!

  25. I don’t feel like I’ve found a design style yet… but, right now, definitely not rainbow inspired! I like to keep trying new techniques and color ideas, and I learn something with every project.

  26. I like to make pretty
    things, so whatever
    I’m feeling at that
    time my style!
    Carla from Utah

  27. I don’t like to limit myself to one style. my LQS, doesn’t have much modern fabric but I have bought some solids foe a dresser scarf that my granddaughter really liked. I like the simple quilting this movement has.

  28. I’m still working on that 🙂 I have a wide range of designs I love, but only have time for a few. So far vintage or classic blocks with fun/ modern fabrics have been mostly where I’ve been, but who know what might be next!

  29. I am more of a traditional quilter usually however do like the clean crisp look of modern quilts. I think preferences in style change over time and if you are open to it you can slowly see the transformation.
    Love the blue colours!

  30. I participate in a monthly strip exchange. I won 38 blue strips in January! These blues have me hoping I’ll win and compliment my strips and get going on my project to update my country style with more of the ocean in the Southwest!

  31. Not sure what to call my Style??? Maybe Traditional blended up into a fun scrappy color-filled Happy Style!! giggle…

Loooove this blues Bundle!! Thank you for chance to win! 🙂

  32. My design style is totally dependent on all the creativeness from others. I can not design a blessed thing so I must have someone else’s creative genius to make a quilt.

  33. I mostly enjoy doing modern projects but I also will create traditional quilts when the right pattern calls me. I guess you could say my design style is “split”!

  34. I’m a real fan of denim, and have used a variety of weights and colors, including recycling old jeans. Denim is a neutral in so many ways, and I love this fabric collection!

  35. My style is very eclectic, and I love different styles of quilts. I think I lean toward more modern patterns and love shades of blue and grey in almost everything.

  40. My style is geometric. I design my own patterns. They can look traditional or modern depending on the colors and fabrics used and the color placement.

  41. My style is eclectic and love everything from Kaffe Fasset fabrics to Civil War reproductions. I love intricate pieced blocks, especially when paired with appliqué.

  42. Denim is becoming a favorite of mine and i love how these tie in seamlessly with that love without the bulk of denim!

  43. I started quilting ages ago with traditional patchwork. If I were just starting out, I’d go totally modern with a few classic twists. I really like Brigette ‘s fabrics and have quite a few of them. Her thread box colors are wonderful and would compliment my fabrics.. of course, I always need more fabric! I really like the globe pattern and hope to make it.

  44. Isn’t her work amazing! My style is traditional and I dabble in modern. Thank you for a lovely giveaway!

  47. I’d like to think my style is modern with a bit of whimsy. I love to add fun twists to my work!

  48. Evolving. I used to just follow patterns exactly. Do BOM with their chosen fabrics. Now I am venturing out trying new combinations and pattern techniques.

  49. I love this line. Sew Little Time in Las Vegas just received a shipment of charms, layer cakes and bolts. I can’t wait to pick up some fabric. Love the thread collection also!

  52. My design style is eclectic. I have antique furniture with modern quilts. Vintage modern, perhaps?

  53. Right now, at this stage of my life, my design style would have to be classified as “simple”. Anything intricate or lavish is just too much for me. It needs to be maintainable.

  54. Just a beginner quilter…don’t really have a style yet. But I do love Moda, Zen Chic and Aurifil!

  55. Eclectic! Bright rainbow one week, my calming reproductions the next then on to the lively batics. But blues, always around they are soothing and calming to me.

  56. Love Zen Chic. I have tried out various styles depending on what I am trying to make, but Brigitte’s colors are always fun and of course Aurifil is the BEST Thread!

  63. I love the True Blue collection. I have admired it on several occasions and was sorely tempted to add it my stash. It’s just super lovely.

  64. I make mostly traditional quilts but I’m in an art group and we stretch our limits by trying different processes and techniques. Lots of fun! My favorite color is blue and I love this True Blue collection.

  65. This would be a great collection to make a quilt for my husband. I am always looking for a collection that was mostly blue to use for him. I am so sure he would love and it as much as he loves his denim quilt from his sister.

  66. My style? Is there such a thing as “beginner easy working towards traditional” ?? lol! Love this collection, love blue!!
    lstangl482 at aol dot com

  67. I started to sew last year. I am new to sewing but I love patchworks a lot. So mine is symmetrical style I think.

  68. I’m a modern quilter with a whiff of urban minimalist. BUT I love classic shirting fabrics and colonial reproductions fabric thrown in the mix…

  69. My style is eclectic and symmetrical and a littke bit wonky! I love saturated colors and low volumes with clean lines.

  70. My style is old fashion traditional and occasional modern. I love all the new colors of fabric and thread. Your interview was great.

  71. I wouldn’t even know how to describe it. I like modern lines, but I also love the antique furnishings that have been passed down to us. So it’s sort of a mix. I like things that have a story behind them.

  72. Brigitte is a wonderful designer, I enjoy her minimalist patterns with beautiful prints. Zen Chic True Blue is a wonderful range of fabrics… and I am faithful to Aurifil threads, the only ones that my sewing machine accepts!
    Katell, France

  73. I love Zen Chic! Thank you for listing the Aurifil thread coordinates separately- it helps with mail order! My decorating style would be described as cozy. I love quilts and samplers, and I love for people to feel comfortable when they’re in our home.

  74. My design style is eclectic. I’ve made some pretty modern quilts as well as very traditional and anywhere in between.

  75. My style is traditional but with a twist. It certainly has a very traditional base but I use fabrics and new techniques to change it up but still maintain the basic quilting roots.

  76. Ich bin heute so und morgen so.
Ich liebe klare Farben und ruhige Pattern.
Aber dann muss es auch mal BAM machen
und die Farben müssen ins Auge springen.
    That’s is.
I love the Pattern from ZEN CHIC / Brigitte Heitland.

  77. Definitely eclectic, I love modern and traditional. Blue is my favorite color. Love the world quilt.

  78. I love every line of Zen Chic fabrics I have seen. They have a minimalist feel, and are so interesting at the same time. Thank you for the chance to win.

  79. My go to design style is reproduction / traditional, but I also enjoy making modern style quilts. Guess I’m more eclectic, if I like it , I make it. This year I’m drawn to the color blue, so happy to see your bluetiful new line. Thanks for the opportunity to win !!!

  80. My design style is eclectic! If I like it I make it:) Sometimes it’s modern, traditional, EPP, combination or something just fun and funky:)

  81. My style is probably traditional but I have been trying more modern designs lately and have really enjoyed making them. I see modern as my focus for the future.

  82. I’m pretty traditional. However, in the last year my daughters have wanted some modern quilts for their new apartments, and I’m evolving toward more of this style.

  83. I shoot for comfort in my home and I love a relaxed vibe. I suppose my style is controlled-scrappy even if we are not talking about quilts. Great interview and I love the new line!

  84. I’m new to quilting so I’m still trying every thing out. I’m really drawn to brightly colored fabrics no matter what style or design is used. Thanks for the opportunity.

  85. I like bright, fun & lively at the moment. That’s due to being a Grandmother! I do like batiks a lot &
Brigitte Heitland’s Zen Chic collection has really got my attention. So Good.
I need to follow her on Instagram!

  86. I love your fabrics and patterns, I have made a few of your quilt patterns and want to try the sphere

  87. I love modern designs, with lots of negative space. Maybe because it often means less piecing 😉

  88. Eclectic is what comes to mind when I think about my design style. I like modern and traditional, certain aspects of country, most aspects of Scandinavian. I’m a big believer in the thought that if you love it, it will go together somehow!

  89. Bohemian all the way! Fused w/denim.
Thank you Brigitte, for an amazing look at True Blue and it’s coming to fruition story.
