Stay Gold by Aneela Hoey

Aneela Hoey‘s brand new collection with  Cloud9 Fabrics is Stay Gold. It is a brilliant lineup of 8 prints on Cloud9’s signature Organic Cotton. Aneela targeted a modern prairie style, showcasing illustrated flowers and horses, realized in rich oranges, yellows, and blues, with pops of pink and green. The collection may just be our new Summer favorite!

Aneela’s coordinating Aurifil thread collection is a small box of 10 spools of our 6-strand Aurifloss in the sweetest colors. To top it all off, Aneela designed a super simple embroidery project, available for free in every single thread box. Are you as inspired to kick into some hand-stitching as we are?

THE INTERVIEW
What first drew you to to the world of sewing and quilting?
My mother who always found time to sew. From a young age I knew that I wanted my own sewing machine and that I would sew and embroider. She also had a marvellous collection of textile scraps, buttons and threads which was housed in colourful woven plastic basket. I loved to tip everything out and investigate its contents when she wasn’t looking.

Who or what has been your greatest creative inspiration?
I love to be surrounded by people who sew. Just knowing that there are others who understand the beauty and importance of fabric, thread and design is a huge motivator for me. This can be in real life such as my mother, friends from college or the online quilting community. I love to be immersed in a world that feels the same as me.

Tell us about Stay Gold. What inspired the designs?
The prints are all inspired by feelings of happiness and contentment. An appreciation for the simple and honest things in life. The collection started with the horse print several years ago. I discovered that horses are in fact very difficult to draw and so began a personal challenge to be able to draw horses that didn’t end up looking like dragons!

Do you have a favorite project or projects made with the collection?
Definitely it has to be my Zip-up Tray Pouch! I used Stay Gold to create the sample that appears on the pattern cover and I love using it everyday!

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
Several years ago I was having thread issues whilst paper piecing hexagons. When I ironed the basted hexagons the thread I used melted and turned into plastic ruining all my work. I decided to investigate the world of thread and found Aurifil. I’ve been using it ever since.

How did you go about selecting colors for Stay Gold and what excites you most about releasing the collection to the world?
I picked all my favourite Aurifloss colours! I started out with 1104 which is the perfect orange red color, added in some pretty pinks and yellows in both light and dark shades. I included the perfect pretty blue 4644 which will be useful when you need a bit of definition in a project such as flower centres, eyes and so on.

We’re super excited about the free pattern that you’ve offered with the collection. Can you tell us a bit more about the pattern and what to expect?
I wanted to include something right there in the box so that as soon as you open It up, you can start using your lovely floss in an embroidery. Because who wants to wait! The pattern is quick and easy and will be suitable for both adults and children. My daughters loved to embroider when they were younger so this was important to me.
