Batiks Go Retro is by Tammy Silvers of Tamaranis. This is Tammy’s first solo collection with Island Batik and we are completely enamored with how the colors are perfectly accented by the subtle retro patterns. The collection was inspired by atomic images of the 1950s. Those awesome shapes carried promise of space travel and future technology, the spirit of possibility and the sense of fun. In the collection, you’ll find little atomic TVs, the iconic wedges, free-wheeling flowers, and the sunburst that was practically a required decorating element in every home at that time.

While we don’t have a curated collection for Batiks Go Retro, we were thrilled to see that the colors line up well with Tammy’s Coastal Mist collection. Tammy was also kind enough to recommend 6 stunning spools of our 50wt thread.

THE INTERVIEW
How did you first get involved with Island Batik?
Oh, another tough one.  I don’t remember the first initial contact, but I’ve been creating projects for Island Batik for years and years and (cough) years.  It has always been a wonderful experience, whether creating projects for publications, or for my own pattern line.  I mean, who wouldn’t love working with all those luscious fabrics? Any project looks awesome in their batiks!

What do you love most about Batik fabrics?
I love so many things about batiks – the saturation of color, even in the soft pastels (yes, I do use pastels – sometimes!).  I love the high thread count of batiks, which means your piecing is true because the fabric isn’t stretching out of shape.  I love that there usually isn’t a wrong or a right side – which makes cutting and piecing so much easier.  I love the range of colors and motifs.  I guess you can tell – I love batiks in general, and they truly are my “go to” fabrics of choice.

What do you love most about Batiks Go Retro?
Argh – I can’t pick just one thing.  I love the fun motifs (she says modestly), and the wonderful range of color the collection has.  Everything from soft pastels to some wonderfully vibrant ode-to-the 50s brights – acid greens, sun washed turquoise, juicy orange.

What inspired the line?
I’ve always loved the clean lines of atomic design AND I grew up watching the Jetsons.  Didn’t we all dream of a robot maid and flying cars?  Those fond memories, combined with the distinctive shapes from the late 50s and early 60s, lead to Batiks Go Retro.

Do you have a favorite project created with the fabrics?
Hmm….again, difficult to pick favorites.  I would say my two favorites are Atomic Bombshell, which is a fun, surprisingly quick to paper piece quilt that really plays on the atomic bursts and sharp points of the time period.  And then Wedge-O-Matic takes the wedge shape to new levels.

What is coming up next for you, where can we find you this year?
I’m thrilled to be introducing my next line with Island Batik this fall – Elementz, a graphic interpretation of the earth’s elements in shape and color.  And I’m honored that several projects in Batiks Go Retro and in Elementz will be featured in different publications, including McCalls, American Patchwork and Quilting and Fons and Porter.

Unknown-3Tammy Silvers is the designer behind the brand Tamarinis. She’s been designing quilts for 10 years, and prides herself on offering bold, fresh new patterns for quilters of all levels. She enjoys working with almost any fabric, but her favorites (the one that makes her drool and blow a carefully constructed budget) are batiks, bold prints, and chicken prints. Having a background in art and literature, another of her guilty quilty pleasures is finding ways to use “words” in her work, be it in the fabric itself or by adding them to the piece.

Tammy is a Georgia native and currently lives in Acworth with her husband, children (when they come to visit!), dog, and her favorite fat cats.

Under the label Tamarinis, her designs are regularly published in a variety of quilt magazines, including Quilt, McCall’s Quilting, American Patchwork and Quilting, Stitch, Fons and Porter’s Love of Quilting, Quilty, Quilt It…Today, Sew It…Today, Stitch and Create and Decorate. She also works with some of the major fabric manufacturers designing projects to showcase and promote their fabric lines, including Island Batik (of course!), Northcott Fabrics, Blend, Camelot and Fabri-Quilt.

  9. I like the colours of the batiks and the fact that you can use both sides of the fabric for different effects. Such a bonus.

  10. What I love most is that they seem to go with just about every other batik and mix well with other fabric lines also.

  11. I love the rich colors of batiks and the fact that they don’t fray. Thanks for the chance to win this beautiful bundle!

  12. I mostly use batiks, because they play well together – no theme, pattern or design to match – just think COLOR! Plus the artisan part makes each piece unique.

  13. I’m always surprised when I finish a batik project because the fabric shades blend and offset each other. The finish is very pleasing.

  14. I love that batik fabrics don’t fray like regular fabrics; that batiks don’t have a right/wrong side; and that they are such bright colors!

  15. I love the wide variety of colors and patterns and the ability to coordinate the all! They never fail to inspire me! duchick at mchsi dot com

  16. There are so many reasons why I love batiks: beautiful and rich colours, doesn’t fray, both sides are perfect, and they go well with other fabrics.

  17. I love batiks in general, but this collection is out of this world beautiful. So fresh and clear, I can imagine many quilts to make with them. Will be on the look out for this fabric!

  18. I love the variety of colors within one piece of fabric, and how the fabric cuts so clean and does not ravel.

  19. Island Batik is just the best. Color, thread count, the designs and colors. Love it.

  20. The first time i used batiks in a wuilt, i was blown away at how versatile they were and how easy it was to do make the most beautiful wuilt i had ever made. I had these batiks in my possession for a while but was a little intimidated by them for some reason. Now i am obsessed with batiks. They are amazing as blenders or stand alones. Use them for applique, anything! I made the most gorgeous orange peel quilt using bright batiks as the peels and light modern backgrounds and its so amazing. I never would have thought to do that if i had not conquered my fear of them in the first place and learned how versatile and beautiful and fun they are to play with. My favorite!

  21. I love how crisp batiks are. They cut so cleanly, and sew like a dream. Then there’s the stunning array of color and design. Batiks truly make a project one of a kind!

  22. This collection is beautiful and I absolutely love the patterns. Very interested in batiks going retro!! Looking forward to this.

  23. Of course I love that batik fabric eliminates the need to watch for right and wrong sides – but more important are the rich colors.

  24. Batiks are usually vibrant in their coloration and these just SING! Batiks are just versital in quilting projects, love to use them. Would love to play with this group and those great threads!

  25. I love the tropical look of the fabric. I also like that it doesn’t ravel as badly as other quilting fabrics.

  26. I love working with the vibrant colours of Batik fabrics. Such beautiful blending and shading.

  27. Batiks are great, used in most any quilt project, but serve a dual purpose when making a colorwash quilt, in that you can use both sides. Love them!!

  28. There’s SO much to love about batik fabrics!
Batiks have a wonderful hand… feel as rich and lush as they look!
I love that the fabrics (because of how they are made!) are actually unique works of art!… and the fabric has two unique, usable sides!
The colors are saturated, rich, and vibrant…
You sense immediately that this is a very special fabric… which can be intimidating at first! (You may feel that it’s so special, you have to save it for some “special” pattern!)… but once you take that first step, and create with batiks, you *love* working with them!

  29. I love the fantastic colors on Island Batik fabrics. As I often make softies, I’ve found that these fabrics are perfect for that.

  30. I love the looks of batiks and they are my favourite fabric to sew with. I love how easy they are to use as they are usually the same on both sides.

  31. The way batiks bring the feeling of nature into my quilts and designs is one reason I love working with them.

  32. Batiks and thread, so many I want to buy. I love the retro designs (I didn’t think of the Jetsons until I read this and the fabrics do remind me of the show – love it. I enjoy reading about you and your inspiration. Thank you for the chance to win.

  33. I did a workshop with Gillian Travis and was really impressed by the Island Batiks she was using. Such lovely colours.

  34. I love how easy batiks are to press and cut. The extra stiffness is just perfect, but doesn’t keep the quilt from being soft. This collection is so beautiful!

  35. I love following Tammy because of her designs and the Island Batiks she creates. I love her color choices of the aquas, teals and purples, and this collection is as fun as Coastal Mist. Island Batiks are such great quality that they are fun and easy to work with.
