We first met the fine folks at QT Fabrics through Aurifil Designer Wendy Sheppard. Her Marmalade Meadows floss collection was released in the Fall of 2016 in partner with QT’s Bleecker Street collection. We loved working together and QT Fabrics approached us shortly after about putting together a new thread collection to coordinate with one of their in-stock programs, Ombre Stitches. We immediately fell in love with the line, simple, colorful, and sweet. The 12 coordinating thread colors are the perfect match to the fabric line, but also represent a delightfully colorful selection, a wonderful addition to any sewing room!

THE INTERVIEW
Can you tell us a bit about QT Fabrics and what the company is all about?
We are a proud employee-owned company with history dating back to 1807! We offer a wide variety of fabric styles and have been known in the industry for our high-quality fabric, stellar customer service and our commitment to our shop customers. Our focus is to continue the momentum of quilting, sewing, and crafting enthusiasm with new ideas, new collaborations and lots of great print designs. We love what we do and it shows!

Is there a driving creative force behind the QT house designs?
Yes, we are constantly on the lookout for new, innovative art and styles. We have a super talented team of artists/designers on staff that create our wonderful designs. Sometimes, the artwork is purchased and manipulated and other times, we turn to our extensive archives of art. Our team then takes those as inspiration and creates fabric collections with the quilter and sewer in mind. We are different than most companies as we have our own sales force and we want to provide a good range of themes and styles. We’ve found that over the years, the QT in house designs perform well for us.

We love Ombre Stitches! Can you tell us a bit more about the inspiration for the line?
We love it too! It was a purchased design; as soon as our Design Director saw it, she loved it and thought it was different than your ordinary blender. Of course, it showcases stitches we know and love, and the ombre color variation is perfect to coordinate with lots of different fabric!
Do you have a favorite project or projects made with the collection?
We are constantly amazed by our pattern designer friends. With every collection, there are so many beautiful interpretations for a project. It’s hard to pick, of course. We were blown away by Whole Circle Studio (Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill) and her Sew Speedy Mini Quilt. Her translation of the theme and color of the collection is clever and inspiring. Coupled with the Aurifil thread collection, the project really speaks to the magic of collaborating with industry friends!
Find the pattern to Sew Speedy on the Whole Circle Studio website.
When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
As a quilting fabric manufacturer, we have always been aware of the excellence of Aurifil. The quality, color and performance is well-known throughout the industry. A couple of years ago, we were fortunate enough to get more hands-on experience through working with Wendy Sheppard of Ivory Springs. She curated an Aurifloss collection, Marmalade Meadows, as a companion to our Bleecker Street fabric collection. This experience really opened our eyes to the importance of quality and color that Aurifil achieves.

How did you go about selecting colors for Ombre Stitches and what excites you most about releasing the collection to the world?
For the fabric collection, it was quite a challenge coloring Ombre Stitches. There was a lot of playing around. If you notice, there are several colors that create the design and the key was to not make anyone of them stand out too much. Although it’s not a true “blender” fabric, we wanted it to usable as such. The key was to be able to make distinct color combinations that didn’t overlap with each other.
For the thread collection, it was a lot of fun to review the Aurifil colors and develop the companion colors for Ombre Stitches. Selecting colors that could feature the overall color statement for each print was a fun challenge. It seemed especially appropriate to incorporate variegated threads as it enhances the theme of Ombre Stitches.
We couldn’t be happier with the results. Having a print collection that we adore so much and being able to support it with the quality of Aurifil threads is so satisfying. We strive to provide the best possible designs to inspire great projects. This collection of threads expands the possibilities further. Fans of QT and Aurifil will have everything they need to create outstanding projects with spectacular results.
What other plans do you have for Ombre Stitches — anything that shop owners and consumers should keep in mind?
We are thrilled to say we decided to make this collection an in-stock blender. This reaffirms our commitment to reorder reliability. We feel strongly this collection is on-trend, yet classic. With all of that in-mind, we are planning another great project launch with this set of fabrics and our Color Blends in-stock fabrics, stay tuned! We also continue to support our friends at Pine Tree Country Quilts who developed another great pattern “Ombre Medallion” with Ombre Stitches. The possibilities are endless!
