Aurifil 2018 May Designer of the Month Minki Kim

I’m Designer, Author, Talk Show host Pat Sloan.

In 2010 I created the first original Block of the month for Aurifil and it was so much fun we’ve done it ever year since! 2018 is the start of my 8th year running this super fun program.  Learn more about how it works at our intro of the 2018 team

This year we challenged each designer to create a block inspired by ‘The Places We Go’ and I asked them to use  black & white fabrics  + a color of their choice.

It’s exciting to see work that is fresh and inspirational. Minki Kim thread painting is not only a clever way to applique, but her projects are darling and everyone wants to make one!

Minki selected her charcoal gray thread to do her signature applique and that is the black in her block, I love how each designer brings their own twist to the challenge!

She is also a beautiful photographer, visit her at

When was your FIRST quilt sighting?

I moved this new town five years ago and met my quilty friend. Visiting her house and seeing her pile of quilts made me want to try quilt.

Have you had a ‘light bulb’ moment in making

I found out that pressing the seam to the right directions leads me to satisfying results.

What does your studio look like, and what would you change in it?

I took up my living room as my sewing studio and my little girl is always with me making, playing, painting or watching Youtube.

And my second book Diary in Stitches will be out in August (from Stash books) My sewing illustration art works will be featured in Sew Somerset magazine June issue and my quilt will be in Make Modern magazine summer issue.

What location inspired your block?

My family visit Santa Barbara and stay at Four Seasons hotel or Barbara for one night on every anniversary. It’s been our family tradition now and my block was inspired by beautiful Santa Barbara tiles.

I am glad that I got to create a quilt block that will make my 15th anniversary even more special.
