We just adore Pat Sloan. Not only is she a true industry icon and one of our original Aurifil champions, she is also an absolute joy to work with. She has written over 30 books, has designed hundreds of quilts and quilt patterns, has put together countless fabric collections for companies like Moda and Benartex, curates thread collections for Aurifil, manages the largest quilting group on Facebook, and somehow still has time to share weekly videos, orchestrate inspiring online events, and even actually quilt! She is a tireless crusader for quilting and sewing education and is generally seen as an inspiration to all;). So… we love Pat. Pat is just amazing.
Today we have the distinct pleasure of celebrating her new book release! Holiday Celebrations (Martingale/That Patchwork Place) is a beautifully curated collection of 17 easy quilting projects for a variety of seasonal occasions.
Pat has put together a wonderfully rich selection of projects, including everything from full quilts to table runners, wall hangings to Halloween accessories! Her patterns are masterfully constructed, truly like a quilty education. This is where Pat shines. Her passion for sharing her craft with the world comes through in her writing and her patterns are notoriously easy to follow, even for beginners. We’re delighted to share a few of our favorites below!
Welcome Home by Pat Sloan Hello, Autumn by Pat Sloan Sparklers by Pat Sloan Merry Little Houses by Pat Sloan Hello, Luv! by Pat Sloan
Aurifil’s own Kate Brennan jumped at the chance to create a project from Pat’s book and we’re delighted to welcome her here to Auribuzz today! Thank you, Kate!
I had the opportunity to pick a pattern from Pat’s new book, Holiday Celebrations. I chose the Liberty Hill pattern but only made 3 blocks for a table runner. I dug through my stash and decided the Dear Stella I had been holding for something special was perfect.

The blocks went together really well. Pat, as always, gives excellent instructions and I would have saved myself a bunch of time if I had read them all the way through before starting my first block – I really should know better by now! As I was piecing them, I realized the opportunity for fussy cutting that 6” center square – I already have fabric pulled for a whole quilt as shown in the book or maybe even bigger. The block finishes at 15” x 15” which is a really nice size for a large bed quilt.
The only real problem I had while putting this together was keeping the pooches out of the way for the photos!
I used thread from the Pompeii, Como, and African Penguin Color Builder thread collections and since I have been practicing my free motion quilting lately, I decided to add a little interest. The 50wt (I used blue and red) thread creates really nice texture in the background without overpowering the adorable prints and the 40wt is a little heavier and added a little more detail in the stars. I used a wool batting to give even more texture!

HUGE thanks to Kate for lending her expert eye to this project. We are so fortunate to have some very talented makers on staff!!

Pat Sloan is a designer, author, and lecturer, and with her weekly radio show, Pat truly is the “Voice of Quilting”. She has a deep passion for making quilting fun for herself and everyone around her. Pat loves to hang out with quilters on the internet as well as visit you in person. Be inspired to get more done!
Having sewn since she was a child and quilted for over 20 years, Pat eventually looked to her craft as a business. After a few years quilting she started to teach quilt making to others and then turned her skills to pattern designing. She found that she really enjoys designing and seeing how other quilters made her patterns. In 2000 Pat’s designs became so popular that she and her husband Gregg formed a design and publishing company called Pat Sloan & Co. In addition to designing and publishing her work, they now travel around the country teaching and showing her quilts to quilt guilds and quilt shops. Also, Pat has had her designs published in all the national magazines, she has written 31 quilt books and has designed many lines of fabric for Moda Fabrics.
Visit her website for more info.

Hello, Aurifill!
I would love to do, “Hello, Autumn,” as a complete quilt. I am a nature-loving, tree-hugging, hiker! I have planted two maple trees on my property in the last few years, and that quilt block is a perfect representation of my life and passions.
May I take this opportunity to thank you? Quilting was made so much easier for me when I tried your thread for the first time. I am a hand sewer and quilter, so getting a thread that is both strong and yet, flexible, is so important. Your website was informative and guided my selections – and as a person surrounded by machine sewers, I sometimes felt a bit alone. I’ve discovered that there are thousands of quilters like me, and that you are there for us with quality threads for every purpose.
Thank you!
Joni Jecklin
