November Designer of the Month Emily Cier

Hi I’m Pat Sloan the Aurifil Designer of the Month coordinator. For November our stitchery series is from the incredible Emily Cier of Carolina Patchworks! Emily is another designer you want to follow for her tutorials (see the recent one on curves) and her fabulous photography. Emily also shares a lot about use of color through the year, and you might catch a glimpse of her children who give her great inspiration! You must start to follow her blog. http://carolinapatchworks.com/blog/

I know you are going to love meeting Emily and her stitchery is very personal and fits in so well for November.  How are you doing on the blocks? Are you up to date?

Remember to post your photo at our Flickr folder of a project given by one of the Aurifil Designers of the month (see tab on right for all the profiles). One quilter EACH MONTH will win a REALLY NICE THREAD prize from Aurifil! Just post a photo of your completed block. Everyone in the Flickr folder is in the running!

Let’s get to know Emily!

When did you first start to do embroidery or stitching?

I did cross stitch as a child (a lot!). After some nasty inflammatory arthritis cleared up, I started stitching again last year.

Favorite go to stitch?

Backstitch. I prefer to make the design the focal point rather than fancy stitches.

Did you work at another career prior to this … what was it? Do you still do that career while having your design business?

I was a graphic designer for non profits. The kids are my other career now.

What does your studio look like?

An absolute mess – I cleaned up a couple spots just for you! It’s nothing special, but it is a space of my own at least!

The workhorse:
What is your favorite storage tip or place?

Keep a bucket for scraps right next to your ironing and/or cutting area. An easily accessible place to toss scraps helps me keep the scraps from wandering around when I leave the room.

Once this bucket gets full I sort them into more buckets — one for each color. Buckets are my friends.

This is how many scraps are left after an entire book on scraps plus several other scrap quilts.

How do you fill your soul? What I mean by this is – what makes you SO HAPPY that you know that if you do this you are experiencing a little ‘Heaven on Earth’.

  • Xpander by Sasha.
  • Theo dark chocolate.
  • That time when some <<enter string of expletives here>> flies past you on the freeway and then you pass them a mile later, stopped by a cop.

How do your ideas develop? Do you sketch, doodle, put ideas on a mood board?

Ideas usually percolate in my subconscious. I’ll jot them down and then when it comes time for a release, I go through, develop the ideas more and proceed with my favorites.

What are your Aurifil ‘go to’ thread colors?

All of them? I have no favorites … except all of them together.

What is your favorite stitching tool?

In sewing and embroidery I’m a true minimalist. I have a hoop, needles, thread, scissors and a water soluble pen. That’s it.

If you could train with, or work with, or follow one person for a day.. who would it be and why?

Some fabulous marketing guru who is also a crafter. To see how they work. How their mind thinks. How they go about their day. Not let the little things bother them so they can still have the gusto to be creative. I think perhaps this might be Martha Stewart I’m describing. Giggles!!

‘Why did you select the image you did for your block’.. or what is the ‘story’ behind your block.

When I found out my month was November my first thought was a turkey. I figured that was too cliche and I needed to go in a different direction.

So as I was gazing out the window, thinking about what my block might be, my block was born. A warbly conifer, mountains, wind and rain.

That’s what November is here in Seattle!

Do you travel to teach? And if so, how often and what types of groups?

I do occasionally travel to teach but with kids and our schedule it’s somewhat difficult. Right now the only upcoming event is Road to California in January 2013. You can see the classes I’ll be teaching here

Anything else you’d like to share?

I have a HUGE fall release. Soon! SUPER soon! It will be up for presale before Thanksgiving.

And now that I’ve typed that, you have to hold me to it! Stay tuned on the blog for more information! I wish I could tell you more, but for now it’s still under wraps. I’ll give you this picture as a tease…

Pixel Play (book #3) was released this past August and like I said above, I’ll be teaching in California this coming January.

And a few on the light side…

Favorite Expression – I’ll opt for the *facial* expression option… McKayla Maroney on the medal stand.

The Book you are currently reading – Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: by Mo Willems … oh, wait. You mean a grown up book? With chapters? Hmmm…

Your Favorite Movie – All the President’s Men.

Dream Vacation spot – Anywhere. As long as it’s a vacation.

The Color you have always LOVED…..I <3 the whole rainbow together!
