Blue Moon is one of our new favorite Signature Collections from Island Batik. Designed by Kathy Engle for Jackie Kunkel of Canton Village Quilt Works, Blue Moon is a rich collection of cool blues and purples with earthy elements like trees, bark, pinecones and pine sprigs. There are even some fanciful snowflakes and dots to add a touch of sparkle!
Jackie curated a gorgeous collection of 12 Large spools of 50wt thread — the box is a stunning array of purples and blues, both perfect for working with the Blue Moon fabrics, but also a fine bit of eye candy to add some lovely new colors to your stash.
The collection was absolutely perfect for a fabulous new collaboration with best-selling author, Marie Bostwick. You can read more about that partnership here.

THE INTERVIEW
How did you first connect with Island Batik?
Actually that is interesting, I first connected with them I think it was 2011. I made a quilt for Quilt Magazine called Paradise Island. It was made from all Island Batik fabrics and was featured at Quilt market. Then I made another for Quilt Magazine that was featured on the cover of the June, 2012 which was also Island Batik. Fast Forward to 2015, Island Batik came to me and asked me to design a quilt for one of their lines, which I did, then afterwards they asked to meet with me at Market. That sealed the deal. They have been fabulous to work with and for… and I hope to continue for more years of collaborative creativity!

What do you love most about working with batik fabrics?
Ah, now that is a trick question! What is NOT to love about batiks? The colors, the texture, the timelessness… everything about them is something to love. They add something special to every project that you make. Mix them with prints or not… but they are a fabulous fabric to work with. You can purchase a batik now and 15 years from now, it has the ability to be placed in any project just like you purchased the batik yesterday.

Can you tell us a bit more about this collection and what it means to you?
The Blue Moon Collection designed by Kathy Engle for me… It spoke to me! Typically I am not someone who is drawn to blues, but there were those deep dark cobalt blues, deep purples and lavenders, and light versions of the saturated tones. I looked at this and said it was just beautiful. And it was somewhat of a challenge for me since I don’t normally work with these colors, but I loved it and love this collection.

Do you have a favorite project or projects made with this collection?
Hmmmm…. I think my two most favorite patterns that I designed are my Pansy Garden which is filled with curves and plays with light and dark to form “Pansies”. Then I also designed Twisted, that quilt is a great one to showcase your stripes. This collection is filled with stripes and really highlights them. I use a 120 degree triangle ruler that simplifies how you will construct this quilt. I just love the finished result.

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about working with them?
Lovely Aurifil… I don’t remember the exact date but it had to be at least 6 or more years ago. I love the colors that are offered, the varying weights and the fact they don’t break. But my absolute, hands down favorite weight is 50wt. I love piecing with it and it is my go to for piecing, traditional or paper pieced. I love color 2600 for piecing. From my thread collections, I love using them for quilting and embellishment of any project. They make the project sing!

Do you have any tips for using Aurifil 100% Cotton Threads with Island Batik Cotton fabrics?
My best tip is to use them! They complement Island Batik fabrics and vice versa. Don’t shy away from the thread colors, use color with the batiks! Have fun!

What is coming up next for you, where can we find you this year?
Well, I am traveling all over the country teaching and you can check out my schedule on my site to see if I am in a place near you. I will be at Spring Market with Island Batik and my next collection, then again at Fall Market with my Debut Fabric Collection! That I am super excited about. That collection is mine from concept, to design, to coloration, to fabric and I love it!! So stay tuned. I hope to see you all.
